QUOTE
The Italian Grand Prix will remain at Monza until 2016 after a deal between Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and the historic track's managers.

There had been uncertainty over the circuit's future amid rumours of a new Grand Prix through the streets of Rome.

But Ecclestone has signed off a four-year extension to a contract which was due to expire in 2012.

Monza is one of Formula 1's most famous venues, having first hosted the Italian Grand Prix in 1922.

Like I said in an earlier thread a Rome GP is not going to replace Monza.

Bernie Ecclestone is not considering accommodating two Italian races on future F1 calendars, according to the Finnish publication Turun Sanomat.

The newspaper's correspondent Heikki Kulta reported from Madonna di Campiglio this week that Rome's candidature for a street race in 2012 endangers the historic Italian Grand Prix venue Monza.

Turun Sanomat said Monza cannot afford to renew its current deal with F1.

Shortly before Christmas, the sport's chief executive Ecclestone confirmed an agreement for a seven-year race deal with Rome, hinting to the Times that the layout would be close to the Vatican.

"Every time there is an overtaking manoeuvre, we're going to put the black smoke up," he joked.

Heikki Kulta is just another scaremonger exactly as I suspected down.gif

So whats the GP in Rome going to be called if we haven't gotten rid of Valencia by then? San Marino again? That might be pushing it a bit far but then I think the Nuburgring held the Luxembourg Grand Prix one year.

Vatican GP maybe?

Presumably the Rome Grand Prix wouldn't be a bad name?

Rome isn't that far from the sea, so Mediterranean Grand Prix maybe? The name has been used before I believe for non-championship races.

Who cares how they call it, I like another European venue. up.gif

Question is what GP are we going to lose?

The Middle East ones have long term contracts, although I don't know about Turkey.
Most of the European GPs are contracted long(er) term as well, can't see Todt letting Malaysia go and losing Australia or China doesn't seem obvious either.

Add to that India and Russia knocking on the F1 door and the lobby to bring the French GP back, something has gotta give. confused.gif

I think Turkey is up for renewal next year. Doubt it will get renewed as its not financially viable for Turkey. Shame because its one of the better modern circuits.
