Full Version: 1970 Warwick Farm Tasman

Hi!
Were the 2.5 Tasman cars and the F5000s
evenly matched on that weekend? I mean
Lawrence in Ferrari Dino 246 on pole with
a 1.24.9 and Matich in the Mclaren M10B a
tenth behind.
Bartlett and Stewart achieved a Mildren 1-2
finish in the race. Were they under team
orders? What do you think, Ray?
Ray Bell
Probably... but that was very early in the F5000 era, the time would quickly come when F5000 was the only way to go. Of all circuits, Warwick Farm was the one to match them most evenly.

I must have answered this without reference to the race report...

There we see that there 'had been a heavy fall [of rain] during the foregoing race for tourers'... and reporter Wherrett mentions that nobody fitted wet weather tyres despite this, the heavy humidity and the threat of rain.

Probably more important is the fact that Matich, after winning the start, had Bartlett attempt to pass him the first time into the Causeway. They touched and Matich spun, Bartlett and Stewart going wide and John harvey (Brabham/Jane Waggott TC4V) ducked through into the lead.

After Matich recovered and worked his way up to third place (Harvey soon dropped off the pace), he was 18 seconds behind the leader and that distance remained more or less constant until loose wheel nuts (!) put the McLaren out.

Ironically, fastest lap and new lap record went to Niel Allen (1:25.7) despite the fact that he made no impression on anything during the event!

Good Lord...I was there! I saved up my R&R for months so I could go to the Tasman race at Warwick. I still have the race program and the racing club car badge I purchased there!

I will never forget the hospitality shown me by the Aussies. wave.gif

I'm looking for a poster from that event. Can anyone help?

Many thanks!

Why didn't you make yourself known to us then?

And were you down at Creek Corner for the race? In with the mad bugler and the other drunks...

Ray, Allen Brown's site lists in the F5000 results section that Harvey's Brabham was still running the 2.5 Repco V8 in this and the next round at Sandown and doesn't mention the Waggott. I have only become immersed in 2.5 litre Tasman Series racing in the last 4 years or so, but I was unaware that the Jane Brabham got a TC4V.

Apparently it went to Bob Curran from there and became an ANF2 car.

David,

The Brabham that Ray is referring to is the BT30/36 Brabham Waggott TC4V , not the earlier BT23 based car.

Allen Brown's site is right... I've bombed again!

The Jane car didn't get the TC4V until later...

Well, at the time I was trying to avoid buglers of all kinds....at least for the week I was in Oz! Seriously, I spent most of the weekend in the paddock and around the pits. It's been so long ago I can barely remember any of it now.....

If anyone has some pictures of the weekend (or a poster!) I'd love to see them posted here.

Noting that the 'farm is quite a ways from Kings Cross roflmao.gif There is a thread running that has a montage of posters from the era (sincerely hope I haven't seen it on 10/10ths blush.gif )
