INDIANAPOLIS - Following Chevrolet Alfa Romeo is planning to return from 2012 as an engine supplier in the IndyCar Series. FIAT, the owner of Alfa Romeo would be possible if an agreement was concluded with a familiar partner for engine development.

According to Racing Italia FIAT, engine specialists Cosworth, currently best known for the Formula 1 engines, attracting an Alfa Romeo engine development for 2012. Then the new IndyCar Regulations in force.

I presume its a bad translation and means Alfa are commissioning Cosworth to design and/or build engines for them?

Why Cosworth and not rebadged Ferrari engines, is it cheaper to outsource rather go with a sister company?

All good for Cosworth though, will keep them alive and profitable.

It's cheaper to badge the engines than it is to build and badge engines. Why Cosworth? I don't know, but it's a cheap option, and Cosworth will be there anyway with or without branding haha.

What can't Alfa Romeo make their own engines!?!?

Didn't exactly work out for them last time they tried it in Indycar...

the rules call for a proper racing engine i think, so teaming up with a established builder makes sense

Wasn't that just a rebadge job on the Ferrari indycar engine (that never raced)?

A Ferrari designed engine would have made more sense to me. But I would like to see Alfa in Indycar regardless.

A cossie with an Alfa badge, just badge engineering really isn't it.

Boooring. Though it'd be fun if Alfa made the box and they all had to double clutch second gear.

Maybe Fiat would like to sell some Alfa Romeo's in the US?
