I think the London GP would be a great addition to an F1 season. Silverstone isn't the same anymore (the old circuit being much more fun to drive) and it's just another circuit like the rest now and still doesn't provide that many good passes.
I think a London GP would be great, similar to a monaco, a street circuit with all the culture and surroundings, it seems Silverstone management have lost it with the changes recently and that's a shame, it's no longer the classic track it was.... It's something else.
So in an attempt to create another Monaco, a London street circuit could well be answer, what do you think?

I don't see why not. If the heads in charge of F1 had balls it would most certainly happen, also would help tourism and currency.
It could happen very easily.

lol what 'the heads in F1' want to happen is worlds apart from 1: what 'the heads in London' and 2: 'the population of London' want to happen - they're two completely different things......we're all motorsport fans here but you have to remember that we are not the majority of the population by any stretch of the imagination. Add to that the fact that the vast majority of the population consider F1 (and motorsport in general) to be an incredibly wasteful money-pit of an industry/sport anyway and any kind of proposal of this sort is dead in the water.
sorry......

Well my main reason for this thread is because I had the awful boring London marathon on (Really boring TV presentation I have to say)... However... I have to say, whilst looking at some of the aspects of the road I think it would make a fantastic Grand Prix. There is a certain tunnel I saw which very much reminded me of the Monaco tunnel, and I'm no professional driver, but from within the simulators... The new Silverstone track is a joke compared to the former Grand Prix track and it's just not that fun to drive anymore.

If they had a race in London it would be for tourism, with Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and The Mall all in close proximity, i'm sure this area would be debated as the place to stage it. It also allows space for Grandstands in ST James Park and Green Park (head from The Mall up Constitution Hill to Hyde Park corner)

The same thoughts struck me too as I watched the marathon on TV. A London GP would attract a sensational crowd and some overtaking could be done on Park Lane. As a matter of fact rich Arabs race on Park Lane at night.

Technically, we do. Yas Marina is on an artificial island built specifically for the race; a track in the middle of the ocean, essentially.

There are two hysterically big issues with that map. The first is, have you ever been in Green Park? The areas you outline are basically footpaths. You could get a car down there, but one at a time.
The second is Grosvenor Square. Minor fortress known as the US Embassy is one of your apexes. You better hope they have finished moving to their location south of the Thames by the time your race starts.

The new track is much better than the old one, and I found last years race much better than those on the old track. Silverstone is the best in Britain, and lets remember the long contract they have.

Certainly, i don't think it would ever happen because of logistics, but just saying that it would be a great advertisement for London if it did which is why they would choose to host it around some of the most prestigious landmarks (and the Queen's driveway as you put it

)
In fact I think the biggest reason why it won't happen is the amount of pedestrian islands in the middle of the roads they would have to remove and the works they would have to do to get the roads in a reasonable condition.
Grandstands and organisation is the least of their worries.
Logistical nightmare but it'd be nice.

Everyone who decides to cause disruption seems to want to do it here - marches, demonstrations, etc. We've had helicopters buzzing overhead all day for the marathon, when it would have been nice to have sat out enjoying some peace and quiet in the sunshine. It'll probably be the same in a couple of weeks with The Wedding. And we've got the Olympics next year, which will cause chaos.
Can't we spread the joy around a bit? Cardiff? Or, Edinburgh? Now that would be great, against the backdrop of the castle

Does London really need any publicity ? It's one of the most famous and iconic cities of the world already. An F1 race in London would cost just so much money to run. They would have to close major roads for weeks ahead, and the whole area would be a standstill for the entire weekend. Most shops with half a mile of the track would probably lose soo much trade for the weekend that they would surely not approve of it. The annual cost would probably be more than it costs to build a decent site from scratch somewhere else.

Apr 17 2011, 15:21
Personally they should hold a GP in Barnsley or Sheffield. Bring the whole thing back down to earth... a little.
Why not Croydon instead of London?
There are enough street races in F1 already. London is nice and a drive down the Victoria Embankment would probably look great but I would still have to say no if the proportion of street races versus proper circuit races would increase. You can replace Valencia with London though just fine and there will be no loss at all.

We are pretty much agreeing that it will never go ahead. I'm just saying that if it ever would it would be agreed to by the Councils and Co. as an advertisement of the city and therefore it would be around the landmarks.
Thames looks nice... a stream of muddy water flowing through London!
