Full Version: Why do teams keep the adjust mechinsm on the front wing?

As far as I know front wing adjustment was banned at the end of the last year, because it didn't have the effect hoped. Many teams like Ferrari, McLaren still have it. Why? Did it became a help to hold the flap or?

I believe so they can tweak the front wing during pit stops if necessary. It was a feature available before the driver adjustable wing was introduced. I don't think these wings are at all driver adjustable, and if they were they would be illegal.

You'd be wrong. The driver could make a 7 degree adjustment last year. There's no mechanism in the car for that now.

I don't think I am wrong. Maybe you didn't read my post carefully. I mentioned there is no mechanism in the car THIS year, but the mechanism on the wing is still there. So my question why if the driver is not allowed any more to adjust it?

maybe post a picture of the mechanism you saw to support your question? i think i know what you are referring too... I was confused when i saw the front wings with think bulky endplates... suggesting something is inside... but i guess is now only operated by mechanic vs. by wire.. by driver

Perhaps you could furnish some pictures or diagrams to illustrate your point?

The front wing can be adjusted in the pits.

The FWA was dropped in favour of the RWA this year, but you still need to adjust it for tyre wear/ balance issues in the pits.

It's only the driver adjustable part that was banned. The other adjustment has always been there and allows the team to tweak the wing at anytime.

the actuators and motors that permit driver adjustment are gone. The rails that permit manual adjustment in the pits are there (as they were before 2010)

Look at it! There is the adjust mechanism which was used for the driver adjustment. Drivers are not allowed to do it any more, but that mechnism is still there.

we understand fine, unfortunately you don't. Those are the rails not any sort of driver operated adjustment mechanism. When the car is stationary the mechanics use an allen key to adjust the angle of the front wing flaps, the flaps move along those rails. What was banned was the driver adjusted front wing, that included a motor and actuators that moved the flaps, those are no longer on the cars.

In short the wings are still adjustable as they have nearly always been, the only thing that has changed is the driver can no longer do it, unless he gets out of the car and shoulders a mechanic out of the way (which might be Bernies new bright idea)

Worth noting the front wing on the Ferrari at launch and first tests was last years wing which still had the mechanism in it, they weren't operating it though.

Many drivers when pitting call for the crew to adjust the front wing. Last one i saw was Button.

The 'it' is not what you claim it to be. That is simply the supports for the flaps (to maintain slot gaps). The old mechanism was housed in the endplates.

Okay, I see now. What I found ineteresting is the fact that this elemt remained on the cae. In the past teams used to adjust the front wing without this.

In the past the elements on the front wing were one piece so such a support was not needed, the way the elements are now the wing would be useless without the support.
