Today I called in our local second-hand bookshop, as I often do, and when I took my selections to the counter the assistant said that whenever she sold a book on motor racing it reminded her of the time, years ago, when a friend used to take her to Goodwood. She said; “We rubbed shoulders with Hawthorn, Collins, Moss and the Italian drivers.”
She went on to say that her friend worked for H.R.G., drove an MG and owned an Alfa Romeo. He later became a racing driver.
I asked his name and she said, “Richard Watson.”
When I got home I looked up my H.R.G. book and there on page 161 was the name Dickie Watson. He had assisted Doug Orchard on the twin-cam project and when Doug left H.R.G in 1955 to join Vanwall, Watson went with him.
Does anyone on the Forum know Richard Watson or anything about his later life?

I met Dickie at Silverstone this year. He lives in the N of Scotland but still visits many race meetings. He didnt leave till 56 as he worked on my HRG twincam. He said he tested it down the Kingston byepass at 100mph before they fitted the body ontro the chassis

Dick Watson was the man who worked on most of the late Raymond Fielding's Maseratis and things. I met him at Silverstone a few years ago and he was still in good form. He lives in Forres where Ray Fielding had his garage.

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately the bookshop has changed hands and the friend of Dick Watson no longer works there.
