Thanks a lot Roger ; it's done.
But the pic is small and you have to click it to enlarge it !
In fact I like very much this pic : the ambiance of that period is very nicely showed.
And what a difference between that ans to-day's !

On Dalton Watson website is a preview of the coming book on transporters .
Hello Bjorn
Nice to see that the book will available by the end of the year, although the price appears to be somewhat on the high side, but no doubt copyright clearance for many of the historic images will not have come cheap. There also appears to be a typo error by Dalton Watson's setters on the page 29 lower caption - should that not be 'above'. I hope that is rectified before it goes to print.
Also nice to see your name there - an earlier promotion on the Dalton Watson site appeared to not have included your name. This was inexcusable considering all the work and research on a subject that you have spent so much time on. There can surely be no doubt that this book would not have happened without your valuable input.

Retriever

Not too sure who manufactured all these trucks most are either Kenworths or Freightliners I imagine, the Penske cab overs might be Peterbuilts, even Jackie Stewart commented on the turnout of the Penske trucks when he tested Rick Mears Indy winning PC 17 at 3m 32 secs on this clip.

And, of course, intended to compete on equal terms with the American trucks.

As you say, Ray, the current Freightliner models are branded products of D-B's global truck operations. They mostly use D-B components and designs, including Detroit Diesel branded engines, except for a few domestically sourced options required by buyer preference; esp Cummins engines. The recent tightening of US emission regs weeded out 'legacy' powertrain options that fleets and owner/operators wanted because of experience, existing workshop spares inventory, etc.
The long nose trucks are a quirk/intended effect of US federal and state regs that generally have separate maximums for trailer and overall length. The overall length allows a maximum trailer with a long wheelbase tractor, which drivers prefer.
I'll guess that the Kenworth T600s were picked by the team truckies. The Freightliner COEs probably were part of some Penske deal.

The Penske Freightliners in the pic are the US Freightliner COEs that predated the D-B purchase in the early 80s. Presumably, they have GM Detroit Diesel engines and GM Allison transmissions. Around the time of this picture, Penske had taken control of the Detroit Diesel engine business in a joint venture with GM. GM and Penske sold the engine business to D-B in the mid 90s.

Penske stopped using the "cab over" tractor units in the mid noughties, switching to "conventionals". As you say, the truckies prefer conventionals because the ride is more comfortable. Engines are DDC Series 60. Trailers are made by Featherlite.

Done - sorry about that.
Here's another one I stumbled across. Who would have thought Christine Keeler, the girl at the centre of the Profumo affair would have had an interest in racing transporters. Here she is at Le Mans in 1967, 5 years after the scandal. The picture is from a set from her personal collection made public last year :

Perhaps more a tow vehicle than a transporter, but nice period picture regardless.
Gulp!
Any chance I could see that 2nd pic, Jager?

Oh okay.GM914 - sorry to disappoint you, the 2nd picture was just a duplicate of the 1st that I accidentally posted twice.
Great pic however. Thanks for sharing.
I am working on a few 1:43 models at the moment, mainly 60's-70's-80's Porsches and their Volkswagen Transporter/support crew counterparts. Any help with Type 1 and Type 2 Porsche Transporters out there?
Also, I just picked up a Schabak 1:43 Type 3 Transporter- does anyone know of any privateer/Works teams that used T3's for anything support vehicle wise?
Cheers. Great thread.

Thank you for posting this image. I was up at Heathrow terminal 4 on Saturday morning to collect my son who had flown in from Boston, Mass. On the way out to the M25 this fabulous unit passed in the other direction presumably heading for the cargo terminal. It really was absolutely stunning, especially as the outfit was totally unadorned apart from the subtle signage on the tractor.
An unexpected bonus just after was to join the anticlockwise M25 queue just as a red GTB4 was passing going in the same direction - possibly bound for Goodwood!
One question, arttidesco, these images appear a little on the soft side as do some of the Goodwood 2011 transporter images - any reason?

The transport festival was just down the road from the PoP which was also taking place on the same day. The weather was pretty grim but it was a useful test run of approximately 12 miles nonetheless
