the fond memories of sitting in everlasting traffic jams or sleeping in the 'layby' have finally receeded & it looks like silverstone may get another chance this year, can anyone advise on a decent place to camp as i don't fancy the 'official' campsite, thanks
Not sure what you mean by the "official" campsite.
I have camped at Windmill for a number of years (including April 2000)- not too noisy and full of people who keep coming back. Adjacent to the new marshalls campsite and thus only 200m from the north gate. No problems with traffic either- turn up on Thursday and you get a free view of the Honda lawnmower race in the next field.
i have stayed at Litchlake campsite which is opposite the main entrance and next to the jordan factory
was a great campsite with an amazing atmosphere

Litchlake - every year (except for 2000 when we had to go further down Dadford Lane - the pits!!!) We camp behind the Jordan factory and have a ball.

I have never camped before so I could do with some help also.
Do I just turn up on the day in my car and park my car in the field next to where I will put my tent up?
Are there signs where to camp?
How much is it? There will be two of us with a tent each and one car.
What are the facilitys like? All we need is food and beer.
We will be turning on on Friday. Wil we still find it easy to get a pitch?
Many thanks

i would say if you are going on the friday just turn up should be ok theres plenty of space
there are signs for all the campsites, i cna only comment on litchlake - its right by the main entrance to the track
prolly about 25 quid a night per tent
facilities are good but i'd say take your own beer cos it will be cheaper, the food at litchlake was pretty good

Do they charge you per person per tent or per person per sleeping bag per tent?
Jp
Well I can only speak about Windmill - last year it was £10 per tent and again turning up on Friday is not a problem. No food or beer but the Green Man is only a short walk away and they have a BBQ every night plus it is the base for F1 Racing magazine. Litchlake is THE fun campsite with traders and fun fair- a great place for insomniacs and party animals.
Silverstone Village has a good general store and is geared up for the event.

But Fireworks are a NO NO. Last year the guys in the tent in front of us were setting off fireworks, the police were going crazy anyway - rushing around on bikes to try and stop the fireworks - the next thing we knew was a police van filled with policemen in full riot gear was in front of our tent!!!! They couldn't prove who was setting off fireworks, so they told us we were not allowed to have parties!!!! Then they buggered off and we carried on drinking.
They charge per tent BTW, so get a huge tent and everyone pile into that.

Guys if and when you camp on the day of the GP in 2004 will you please hold up a banner saying " "WE MADE IT THIS TIME ?" - I will be watching the race on TV and will instantly recognize our fellow members when I see this banner - it will be a great acheivement if you make it that day .........maybe bernie is right about silverstone

Windmill does indeed sound ideal - walking distance to a pub is a serious plus point!
Do they have any web presence or is it simply a matter of finding the north gate and turning up?

I know this may sound I little strange, BUT this will be my first grandprix and I was wondering if I am allowed to 'stay' with my car overnight in the carpark? Or do they kick you out after friday/saturday/sunday sessions are finished for the day?
Cheers
Its my first GP as well, I am tenting it with Fifi ( god help us) and apparently I shall be meeting some of you nice atlas people!
Dont worry you wont miss me.. I'm the brunette midget you'll hear screaming in the night about creepy crawlies

Decided to camp ourselves. Any advice on where the best places to pitch a tent are would be great. And for those Atlas members who are going, why not arrange a little get together one night? Let the beers roll.

I think there's something like that going on, but it's long time till Silverstone GP so no rush yet.
Just bought my tickets to Silverstone, and the wife is coming

Do you park your car in the field next to your tent or do you have to park it somewhere else??
At Litchlake you park the car next to the tent....if you turn up Thursday afternoon it shouldn't be full up. Leaving it till Friday...means it might get full...especially with the cheap weekend tickets on sale this year ( the pre March offer now closed, obviously).
