I was wondering does anyone have any thoughts on going to race budget style.
I am thinking of going to the race as follows stay in Nice, buy one of the tickets for the two days a basic admission. I was wondering what this basic ticket would get you.
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks

The trains are always packed so plan to get one of the 1st ones which is around 8am. There are 2-3 cheap hotels in Villefrance which is the town between Nice and MC. It has a train station and some good bars and we squeezed 4 of us into a room so it only cost £24 each per night.
Sector rocheteur includes the path up to the Grimaldi Palace and they kindly box in all the hedges to make great standing platforms.
Try to get about 2/3rds up and you can see the cars come out of the tunnel al the way into the new swimming pool complex plus there is a big screen across the bay that you can see.

There are probably trains even earlier than that on raceday. And I think that Nice will be fairly expensive for accomodation, but you could stay over the border in San Remo or Ventimiglia if there are early trains in.
The thing about the rocher is that you need to get in early to bags a good spot. The *really* keen/stupid turn up the night before with a sleeping bag. I also saw people with shovels for cutting their own seating out of the hillside, or sickles for deforestation to improve the view. Didn';t go last year, but in 2002 there were 2 giant TV screens - one facing the start of pitlane, and one on the far side of the harbour. Now they've remodelled the swimming pool exit, they may have moved the closer screen so it's no longer visible from rocher.
Rocher tickets for race day are €50, and for qually probably €40. I suspect that it will be free entry on the thursday for what it's worth, but even at that price I don't think I'll turn up as the 1-engine rule has killed free practice. (there's no running Friday in Monaco)
There may also be limited viewing opportunities from the streets behind the starting grid, if you can dodge the bouncers. These are free, but frowned upon by Berniedom.
Of course the simplest way is to get the crew to berth your yacht in the harbour, and then helicopter in on the morning of the race. You'll have comfy seats, & from a good spot in the harbour you could see all the way from tunnel exit through swimming pool and round to rascasse. If it's choppy you could re-create the *Rosenthal turns green* pre-race analysis of a few years ago.
