My tickets for the race are in section H. I have been parking along speedway blvd., a mile west of the track. It was very easy to leave after the race because I just pulled out onto speedway blvd. and headed west because I take interstate 74 west to go home. The only problem with this arrangement is it meant 2 miles of walking. In the past 2 years I have developed arthritis in my hip and last year it almost killed me to walk this distance. Does anyone know of good parking spots northwest of the track? Is the traffic bad getting back to the interstate from the north side of the track? I would really like to cut my walking to a mile or less. I have a 7 hour drive home so it is important to get out of town as quickly as possible. Thanks everyone for your help.

Take your pick...
1) You could park on IMS grounds where-ever the yellowshirts direct you for free. This will be either in the North 40 (called that because its 40 acres of open land north of the track) or the infield. Either way you will have no choice as to where to go. The yellow shirts will direct you to a specific parking space to keep traffic moving smoothly.

2) The Coke Lot on the NW corner of 25th St and Georgetown Rd. Actually it runs from 25th St. a half mile north to 30th St. I think rates there are $20 race day parking but I'm not sure. I never park there becase I'm a big fan of free parking. This lot is the closest off track parking lot to the stands on the north side of the track.

3) There is also Lot 6 which is right across the street from your grandstand but unlike the other two I listed that one you have to get your parking pass in advance. You have to call the IMS ticket office for that.

No matter which one you choose it will be a snap to get in and out of the track. The only bad thing about parking on IMS grounds for you I suppose is the traffic patterns for the exit are opposite for the direction you want to go home. 30th St is a 4 lane street and they close both west bound lanes to quickly get people to I-65 on the city's near north side.

Something else you may want to consider is parking at the airport and catching the go indy bus shuttle. It will drop off and pick up right outside the main gate to the track. We stay at a hotel near the airport and use go indy the entire weekend.
I think it is like $10-15 for race day.

The Coke lot is really close, and it was $10 last year.

Where is the coke lot?

There is a map on the URL I posted. The Coke lot is listed as Lot 1-B in the lower left corner of that map. Lot 1-A is also part of it but you have to buy your parking pass ahead of time for that one.

Is there other paid lots along 30th street? Does the traffic on 30th street move quickly after the race? I got on 27th after the first F1 race and it took me 2 hours to get to the interstate.

Yes and no. No there is not large parking lot per-se north of the track (other than the aforementioned Coke Lot), however many of the home owners close to the track will let you park in their front yards for a fee (which varies). If you can get there early you'll find no problems finding such alternative parking locations.

My only experience has been going east on 30th St. In that direction traffic does move pretty good. To give you an idea of it.....I live on the far east side of Indianapolis, perhaps 16 or so miles away from the track as the bird flies. It usually takes me a total of an hour to walk from my seats in the Paddock near the start/finish line to my car on the north end of the track, drive home and park in my garage. So it moves pretty good if you ask me.

That first year there were over 250,000 fans at that race. Now I think the crowds have stabalized to 110,000 or so. I think you won't have any problems with getting out. Just be sure you park on the west side of Georgetown Road. If you don't, the cops may force you to go east as part of their exit traffic plan.
