 Correct !!
No11 I actually do not know as he is not mentioned in the program. But Armando Errico is a good guess as the bike livery looks like that used by the team run by the italian federation.

Marco Papa is indeed in the picture. But he is not the rider directly behind Steve Williams. That's swiss rider Alain Roethlisberger. Papa is further back in the field (no9) on the blue and white bike wearing a yellow helmet.

No20 is not Jean Lafond. It is the german privateer Peter Ammann.

 Marten Duyzers for no40 is correct.
I had a look at Manfrd Mothes site for Armando Errico and found this picture for the race 1983
http://www.highsider...rrico_83_01.htm
So maybe no11 is not Errico but Messere.
On the other hand I have a little doubt regarding
the dating of the picture - it could be that it is not from the European Championship race 1983 as indicated but from the European championship race in Hockenheim in 1984. 1984 the whole race weekend was held in rather bad weather which fits to the picture.

:( Unfortunately Klaus Klein was killed in 1987 during the Ulster GP in Dundrod. I remember an article which stated that his accident was caused by aquaplaning.

I think you were originally right with year 1983 - that was the only year when Anton Mang had a factory HB Suzuki for the 500 class ( although his season was spoilt by injuries and he didn't ride so often ) . In 1984 he was back in 250 with a self-prepared TZ and the following years with Honda but that is another story...

The Manfred Mothes's Errico picture is from 1984...You can compare on his (extraordinary) site with the Burki and Reiner vues...Same pic, same weather and same Tech.control stickers...But, if you look at the Sheene pics it can be the Maipokal race :stoned:

This one confirm the 1983 race

I remember speaking at some length to Klaus in the paddock at the TT 82 or 83 I think, a really nice bloke.

The '87 UGP was started in torrential rain as Joey Dunlop needed points to clinch the F1 championship which he may not have done had the race been cancelled, a bit of a furore afterwards IIRC.

Anyone remember Klaus´s dog? What a character. He was a little white fox terrier with the very original name of Foxy :) . Klaus would pull up in the paddock, and Foxy would jump out of the van, and then do the rounds visiting everyone he knew. He would run into the awning, and if his pals were sitting in the caravan, he would hop in and make a big fuss of whoever he was greeting, turn around, and go off looking for the next people he knew. Klaus would never be very far behind.
He really was a lovely guy.

I was referring to the picture of Armando Errico on Manfred Mothes site with my doubts - my picture is definetely from 1983. The race weekend 1983 was in the best weather conditions - a really sunny and hot weekend. For the European Championship race in 1984 (the Maipokal race) the opposite was true - cold and overcast on the entire weekend and there were a lot of crashes due to the conditions (including Barry Sheene).

Should indeed be the European Championship race in Hockenheim in 1983. The only other opportunity for such a podium would have been the German Championship Race on the Salzburgring 1983 which was the only other non-GP Toni Mang did this year.

Hello forum,

yes you guys were right, I looked through my old picture files and found I screwed up the Errico image's date. It is from 1984. Sorry about that, I'll fix it soon and thanks for being so observant.

Armando Errico, Silverstone 1985. Massimo Messere drove for the same team in 1985. But one can spot an 'E' on the leather hinting on Errico.

....and on the bike screen ! :p

If the 500cc Team Italia was not so prestigious, the 125 and 250 teams was a golden team for the future italians champions with some guys like Biaggi, Chili, Cadalora, Casanova, Gianola, Gramigni, Gresini, Locatelli, Ricci or Vitali and few others

I can hardly remember Dennis riding a 350 in those years, looks not unlike a Sid Griffiths paint job on the fairing , not the Derry's Racing green and white. He did cut his teeth in NZ on 350s though, riding Jim Landrebe's TZ.
