Find A Grave Memorial - Mike Mosley (1946 - 1984)

After reading the link you supplied, I remembered what a really good driver he was. Thanks
Paul Rochdale
Latest additions to my list which now numbers 122 drivers are -

Michele Alboreto, Colin Chapman, Bruce Halford, Rudolf Hasse, Guy Moll, Reg Parnell, Peter Ryan and Ernst von Delius.

To make sure I am being correct, can I confirm that a 'von' is always spelled with a lower case 'v' or can this be either?

Still a long, long way to go and the easier driver burial locations have been found. Some others to be thinking about are Ignazio Guinti, Ken Tyrrell, Herbert McKay-Fraser, Lucien Bianchi and Harry Schell.

Thanks so much for the help and advice.

Welcome home Paul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Ronnie Bucknum's grave in Arroyo Grande Cemetery, San Luis Obispo County, California. He died from complications from diabetes.
Paul Rochdale
I have an apology to make. I have just received an email from someone whose picture of a grave I used but because of what I perceived as a difficulty on placing an aknowledgement of the photographer or owner of the image, I left it as an "added by:" under the picture. Clearly I could not possibly have travelled to the four corners of the Earth to photograph these graves, nor was I alive when many of these drivers lived. I have no intention of hogging the limelight but only wanted to provide a place where our heroes of yesteryear were not forgotten.

After contacting Find-a-Grave I've discovered that by double-clicking on the image, I can add the name of the photographer or owner of the image to the memorial but not on the main page. I shall now go through the list of 126 drivers and, where I can, try to put right this mistake. I hope you appreciate this was done with the best of intentions and have no wish to get embroiled in the complications of copyright and people's sensitivities. After all this IS just a pastime, isn't it?

Dear Paul: I used to add in the caption "Photo courtesy by...........", if you make double click on the image appears the picture bigger and with the caption under it.............
Paul Rochdale
Thanks Marcelo, I only discovered that tonight. Such are the intricicies to a 59yr old neanderthal. drunk.gif

Paul, keep moving forward as "After all this IS just a passion time, isn't it?"

In a conversation last year with the spouse of a loved one lost on track I was advised that different individuals handle those types of events in different ways. This individual was very appreciative of our efforts here in Augusta. Others shy away.

We just try to accommodate whom we can.

Even TNF has issues with these types of efforts.

AIRPS wanted to place a quote by Senna on the AIR monument but so much confusion resulted in trying to be politically correct we simply decided not to use his famous quote about how he felt about racing.

Keep moving forward.

As he's being discussed elsewhere on the forum at the moment, Hugh Hamilton's grave is at the Bremgartenfriedhof in Bern, it's location is shown here .
Paul Rochdale
As a complete numpty at this sort of thing, how can I increase the size of the page to maje the text readable please. Is there an image of him available on the Net, as there's none on Google Images.
KJJ
Paul, when you open the pdf file there's a toolbar at the top which has 96% or something similar about two thirds of the way across. Just increase this figure by clicking on the + sign and the page size will increase accordingly. The text is in German.

There's a thumbnail of Hamilton on Leif Snellman's site, here .
Paul Rochdale
KJJ

Thank you. I surprised myself by discovering the magnifying glass symbol at the top of the page; and I also found the thumbnail image on the www.historicdracing.com website and have emailed them to get permission to use it. Thanks again.

Paul

PS I see that the Bremgartenfriedhofs text shows his death as 20 August rather than 26 August stated elsewhere. I'll have to give it another look.

Hi Paul,

I've noticed that the burial place of the Rodriguez brothers is wrong. They rest in peace at the Panteon Espanol and not the Panteon Civil de Dólores.
The pictures of the tomb are mine (taken on 11 July 1978), I have sent them to Peter Robsahm who'd asked me if I had pictures of the tomb.
My real name is Luc Ghys.
Paul Rochdale
Luc

Thanks very much for pointing that out as it's so important we get the facts right. However I cannot alter anything on those memorial pages other than the ones I write myself. Only the writers (Peter Robsahm and Marcelo Alvarez) can alter the place of the grave and add acknowledgments for the ownership of the images.

Thanks a lot Luc for the information, I had a confussion about where are buried the Rodriguez Brothers. Paul, you are not right. At FAG when a memorial is "not famous" the author can edit it, but when the memorial passed to "famous" anyone can correct it, simply sending an e-mail to info@findagrave.com

Luc, a question. The Panteón Español is a cemetery or a part of a bigger one????????.
Paul Rochdale
Marcelo

What I intended to say that it was probably EASIER for the creator of the memorial page to make the changes rather than relying on the FAG hierarchy to make the changes. We both know this can take some time.

After being contacted by a couple of TNFers, I've decided to enlarge the 'virtual cemetery' to include all those American drivers who, although did not compete in F1 or World Sportscar events, my original parameters for the list, nevertheless did race at major events such as the Indy 500 and at Daytona. I've trawled through a Wikipedia list of racecar drivers killed whilst racing and then crossed checked these names with the FAG site so many are now in the 'virtual cemetery'.

These include George Amick, Scott Baker, Bobby Ball, Tony Bettenhausen, Neil Bonnett, Peter 'Possum' Bourne (Rally driver), Scott Brayton, Jimmy Bryan, Walter Hansgen, Ralph Hepburn, Jerry Hoyt, Kenny Irwin, Blaine Johnson, Adam Petty, Art Pollard, Jimmy Reece, Tony Renna, Edward Glenn 'Fireball' Roberts, Tony Roper, Eddie Sachs, Swede Savage, Terry Schoonover, Gordon Smiley, Gaston Chevrolet, Gary Congdon, Paul Dana, Ronnie Duman, Ed Elisian, Jud Larson, Dave MacDonald, Jovy Marcelo, JD McDuffie, Greg Moore, Pat O'Connor, Jimmy Pardue, Bob Sweikert, Jerry Unser, Rich Vogler, Bill Vukovich, Bill Vukovich III, and Joe Weatherly.

I cannot take credit for these memorial pages as they are already on the FAG site. There's lots more to research but this is a start. I hope people won't think I've simply 'diluted' the original list, rather that these former heroes are not forgotten and have joined their 'brothers in arms' here.

...and the following American drivers added today -

Wilbur Shaw, George Souders, Floyd Davis, Howdy Wilcox, Jimmy Daywalt, Frank Fox, Jim Hurtubise, Chet Miller, Paul Russo, Louis Schneider, Clifford Allison, Davey Allison, Ralph Lee Earnhardt, Tim Flock, Alan Kulwicki, DeWayne 'Tiny' Lund, Lee Petty, Tim Richmond, Curtis Turner and Mike Mosley.

At least now everyone's in one easy-to-find place.

I have been aware of the Find-a-Grave website and have been disappointed with just how few of our fallen heroes are listed. As I'm particularly interested in racing motorcyclists, I have added the following in the last few days - Bill Ivy, Mike Hailwood, Gary Hocking and Joey Dunlop. I've also added an image of the newer Donald Campbell headstone and corrected the location of the grave as there are two in Coniston.

It's difficult to discover where drivers and riders are buried, and probably seen by some as a touch morbid. But I think if it is dealt with sensitively, no harm is done.

Incidentally I am trying at present to locate the graves of Helmut Fath (d.29 June 1993) who lived in the hamlet of Ursenbach, in the Odenwald, Germany; and Swizz sidecar ace Fritz Scheidegger (d.26.3.1967 at Mallory Park). If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful. Thank you.

Whilst 'googleing' Helmut Fath [one of my boyhood hero's!] I came upon the following page - the google translation isn't up to much, but it does show the headstone for him.

Thanks very much for that. Unfortunately the picture of Fath's headstone is no better than the translation, so I have emailed Herbert Kainzinger in the hope he has a better image I can use on Fath's memorial page. However if any reader lives in or is travelling to Bavaria......... wave.gif

He was cremated in France and brought to the States and eventually back to his house in ROSARITO BEACH, MEXICO. His ahses were spread into the Pacific Ocean at the beach near his home. His wife Cleo spread the ashes whilst I looked on." I may be wrong but I believe he returned to England for a BRM anniversary.

I've also been contacted again by the Swiss Embassy in London and told that the headstone of former World Champion Sidecar Racer Fritz Scheidegger has been restored to it's former place because of his fame. Apparently, and astonishingly to me, in Switzerland headstones are removed after thirty or so years. Further details are on www.findagrave.com I have a grainy picture of his headstone from a newspaper which I'll attempt to put on here when I return to the UK.

I have spoken with the gardener of the cemetary in Langenthal who told me that the grave of Fritz Scheidegger was removed after 25 years but restored for the 40th anniversary of his death which will be in 2007.

Thanks Racefellow thats good to hear and nice photos. His passenger John Robinson used to live near me in Croydon, any idea of him?
Paul Rochdale
John Robinson was injured in the crash but recovered (I believe) and hung up his leathers never to race again.
Bernard
Broke his leg and as you say never raced again.

It seems that Brooklands racer Joan Richmond is buried at St Kilda Cemetery, Melbourne.

I've emailed to see if I can obtain a date of birth and death but no reply as yet.

There's a little bit about Miss Richmond's life after she returned to Australia towards the bottom of this page

Whoa! Ardennes? NOT the Belgian Ardennes then? Some journalists in period nicknamed him 'The Wild Boar of The Ardennes'. Was this a misunderstanding of the French d'Ardennes, indicating perhaps that he came from a place named Ardennes? Every day one learns just how much one does not know.

The Ardennes forest stretches across the borders of France/Belgium/Luxembourg... Mouzon happens to be on the French side. (Is the département also named Ardennes?)

Whatever, "le sanglier des Ardennes" still holds true...

Jock Taylor's accident was one of those which should not have happened. Wish the pole hadn't been there, at the side of the Imatra track, one of my personal favourite TT tracks... frown.gif
