interesting Nigel, i was wondering if it was a genuine offer of help in a tight situation or a challenging remark. assuming that is that Roger Penske of Roger Penske Inc had an up to date HGV licence...

Clearly there was an element of challenge there (made in the safe knowledge that no-one would take him up on it).. as I said, RP was underlining that nobody should consider anything beneath them if that was what was required to move the team forward.

I don't suppose RP has a current CDL, but I do remember Ken driving the Tyrrell truck to Monaco in '89. IIRC he was celebrating his 65th birthday or something like that. He managed to clip a toll booth at a peage at one point on the way down...

yes i remember that - very KT i would say! and you can almost hear it canr you? "Ken, we've got a real problem, the truckie's cant goto Monaco, and noone else in the team with an HGV"... short pause.. "I have..."

but it would have been lovely if someone had said "Roger, thats great, we didnt like to ask but it would be ever so helpful if you could - er, you'll need to be getting a move on though.."

i guess that as you say, you should conclude that the offer was made in the almost certain knowledge that no one would come out with the above!

[B]Front brake back-plates/cooling ducts.

Front brake discs (rotors) steel v carbon.

Windscreens.

Engines, Ilmor 265D v Mercedes 500I

Pop-off valves.

Radiator outlet ducting.

Engine cover - raised for the push-rod engine.

Engine cover fin - Indy rules stated the fin should not extend beyond the rear-wheel centre-line.

Rear brake back-plates/cooling ducts.

Rear discs - ditto.

Various decals that macoran picked up!

Single-post rear wing mount on the Indy version, twin on the Champcar version.

and finally - ta daaah! - tiny front wing adjusters on the Indy version -

- and the 265D engine had bifurcated exhaust stubs due to the four valve head as opposed to the 500I's two-vale layout and straight stubs. That detail is just visible!

E & OE as they say in the retail world.

I thank you.

That was fun Tony! Thanks for the challenge.

I found a few days ago Bill Bennett's cutaway of the March 707 in two pieces on the french motorsport forum autodiva.fr. Clueing two part drawings together is kind of a pain in the arse. This is as good as i could manage:

thanks!

What a nice cutaway of my favourite 'E' Type. I have to admit that - shock horror! - the 'E' Type does not have the same effects on my visual pleasure centre as it does for so many people. The first time I saw one, a metalic grey coupe parked outide 'The Highlander' pub at the end of Greys Lane, where Jim Allington had his studio, Jim and I walked down to have a look. It was certainly impressive, especially in those days, but we both felt that there were 'flaws', and my view has not changed even with a dose of nostalgia. However, the Lightweight Coupe! How much better, a stunning car.

I have not seen this cutaway before, I like it very much, it looks so much better on its background than my 'D' Type does - I was never happy with my effort, and the graphic element is sadly lacking. I think J.J.Francoise specialised in F3000 cars, there were lots - or so it seemed - of cutaways of them in the '80's, all with the trademark 'mirror' background. Apart from liking them at the time my abiding memory is thinking "All that extra work!" Where is he now?

What intrigues me is that he must have had a similar run-in with Jaguar that Ray Kilhan, who's KK Jigsaws concern is the reason for the cutaway in the first place, and I had. They were very iffy about any Jaguar logo's being used, in the end grudgingly allowing us to use the old racing logo. It was as if they wanted nothing to do with their heritage. Eventually Goeff Lawson, as Head of Styling, had one framed and hanging in his office at the Jaguar Tech. Centre, albeit with that rather dated border trimmed off!

Further to my previous listings of Tony's work, I have now found the Trojan T102 Formula 5000 car. This I believe was based on the unsuccessful F1 car. Again sorry for the poor quality but maybe Ibsen can clean it up to do it justice.

well, maybe....

the t102 f5000 car appeared first, then the t103 f1 that was supposed to be derived from it. but you do have to wonder if the f1 was actually drawn first and then the f5000 concocted from that - anybody reading this know the answer?

If memory serves, I saw a cutaway of the Reynard 89D in Autosport and was quite impressed at the time - I wonder if it was the same guy? I remember specifically being interested in the use of a machines front bulkhead/suspension unit that was a Reynard F3000 hallmark at the time.

I am keen to find a cutaway of the Trojan T101/Mclaren M21 chassis. Anyone know of any info on that chassis?

I remembered last night that I have in my posession, an excelent book entitled The Autocourse History of the Grand Prix Car 1966-1985 by Doug Nye published by Hazleton. It is full of cutaway drawings of F1 related illustrations. The main reason I puchased it other than covering my favourite era of F1, was because many of Tony's illustrations are within. I have scanned some, unfortunately on an A4 scanner and over the next few days I will upload them to share with you. The first is with this post. It is the Renault V6 1.5 Turbo engine. It is listed as being illustrated by E.T.A.I. France which I believe (I am sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong) was the technical offices of Renault. I hope you enjoy them as I upload them.

Rancethebus
Morefrom the book this time two illustrations for the price of one. Two four-wheel-drive F1 cars. The Matra MS84 by our old friend Robert Roux and the other the McLaren M9A. Both failures as they all were because of the excess weight. It seems ironic that during this period there were hardly any wet grand prix where these type of cars would have been at an advantage. I recall attending the 1969 British GP at Silverstone with all the 4 x 4's circulating together at the tail of the field before they each retired. Poor old Derek Bell in that M9A.

To Ibsen:

Much better job on that March 707 then I could do. I just noticed something: the car has no rear wing???

Also thanks for the Lindner-Jaguar. That is one of my favorite race-cars of all time. I know that the car used to be in the Rosso-Bianco Collection in Aschaffenburg. Does anybody know where it went after the museum was sold-off?

I really think you ought to check with Doug and/or Hazelton before you start putting all this artwork on the thread - I have a pretty good idea of what I can and can't post, but that doesn't mean Marlboro or someone won't, at some stage, have a word in my shell-like. You will note that so far I haven't posted any of the Bill Bennet cutaways that I have in my possession, simply because they're not mine and I don't own the copyright. Untill I am sure of the situation they remain here in a pile.

Good morning, everyone. Tony's cutaway of the Trojan T102 became a permanent decoration on the workshop wall when we were rebuilding this car from several boxes of tiny pieces in 1984/5!! It was a most useful aid to the rebuild! Still have and race this car when it behaves itself and doesn't live up to it's heyday reputation! Also have the Cosworth GAA cutaway which is useful for our other F5000, the March 76A.

Have several other Motoring News cutaways on my desk here but am unable to scan them, sorry! They include Porsche 917-10, Ferrari 312P, BRM P160, Tyrrell 001(?) and 005, Mirage-Weslake, Ibec P2, Surtees TS9B, Lotus 72, BOSS Capri and the Chevy-Cosworth Vega engine.

Regards

Tim

Hi Tim, I'm delighted to hear that the Trojan cutaway was of some help in the re-build, my drawing must have been reasonably accurate after all! The Porsche 917/10, Ferrari 312P, Tyrrell 003, Mirage, Ibec and TS9B have already featured ealier in the thread, and certainly don't need further airing!wink.gif

Also, more thanks to Ibsen the Magician, who has worked wonders with the T102 print, it looks as good as new!

Olá Ibsen !

Para não parecer piada de português, escrevo na nossa língua natal.

Belos desenhos no teu arquivo !

As I said before I am a big fan of this kind of art and I found a store on Ebay that sells prints of cutaways.

To be PC. I'm not associated with them, but I have bought some prints from them. Specifically: TWR Jaguar and my daily driver, a Toyota MR2. The prints are on good stock paper, but in any case, they do have quite a bit of variety.
Too, some of them look like they were done by you Tony? I would hate to think that someone is profiting from your work and you're not getting compensated.
Thanks Ibsen for the Shin link. He has a blog on that site that shows him going through his process, very interesting.

Where did they get all those from?

There's 5 there that I did some work on about 15 years ago. (Aston DB4, E Type, Bristol, Lotus Cortina & Gilbern). Classic Cars used to send me black and white prints from the original drawings and I would Airbrush the colour on top. Some of the prints were really poor quality and needed cleaning up first. I was also being paid peanuts so didn't spend too much time on them!

Definately some of Tony's there.

DHFiallo, byrkus - we have two Boy Scouts amongst us ! Thank you, very interesting, the Ferrrari 250GTO is Nick Mason's copyright, the Lotus 78 and 79 are BAT(John Player) copyright, the Galmer is Valvoline's and the Alfa P3 and Tyrrell 007 are LAT's. The 'D' Type, FW14 and 250F are MINE, all MINE! We will have to see how this pans out, I may not be able to do anything about it, but I will try. I went to the new Porsche Museum yesterday. That is beyond anything I've seen before.
Why I post this here? Well they have a three part cutaway of a 911 there.

Part 1 would be the clay model and there is not much to see apart from some wooden boxes and lots of clay...so I skipped that.

In a similar vein, but an exploded car instead of a cutaway.
