At first glance I thought it might be Lotus 49, but it isn't, however, there is a shot of the front of 1966 Ferrari that is a close thing, including the air-scoops either side of the radiatior, in DCN's History of the Grand Prix Car, p31, but it's not that either! It may not even be an actual car, just a schematic, but I'm sure someone is going to pin-point it! I'm suposed to be gardening...

This is nearer full-size, a lot of Bill's artwork was done quite small, if you measure the steering wheel on it's minor axis, i.e., on the centre-line of the steering column, it should be 30mm. I think one's own monitor size influences this, it is one of many things I am not sure about - like how many beans make five, for example.

I posted this scan taken from the original artwork quite big as I expected the image to be reduced to a default size which could be enlarged by clicking on the appropriate bar. Now I find that all the images are being shown full-size. What's going on? I thought the default thing was a good idea - but then I also liked the white corner to indicate that you had contributed to a thread!

I think a few people complained and it's been put back to how it was. I've noticed the Quote/Reply has gone back to the old style as well

That looks like pre Rotring pen. The days when it was paintbush and ruling pens - but it seems to have Letratone on it. Was that added later?

I don't know how much Rotring is involved here Alan, and what there is is mostly free-hand. And I'm not certain what is brush and what is mapping pen. Bill's work was much looser than mine, looser than Jim Allington's too, and has a rally nice feel. However, I get the impression that there were times when he lost interest a little, that he just wanted to get the job finished. Hence the Letratone, where he otherwise used ink. As far as I can make out the Letratone is original, added at the time the drawing was done. I'm not sure when Letratone became available, but I used it at Luton Tech. on an illustration of a gas boiler, and that would have been in the mid-'60's!

Tony old son...just remember...2 beans plus two do not make 5...remember that and it will be smooth sailing all the way

Where I come from GTB there are several answers to the perennial question - 'How many beans make five?' - two of which are - 'Four, two in each hand,' or 'One and a half bean, half bean, whole bean, two bean.' So there!

Being a designer myself ( not cars ) drawings always call my attention and when I bumped into this thread I was delighted with all the drawings posted.
Cut away drawings have always captivated me and I would like to thank Tony Matthews for sharing his work / time with us.

Thanks for the post on the Tamiya Art. They had some beautiful art on their box covers, and especially the group C cars. You wouldn't have anymore?

Having looked at the list and especially at Tony's work that is listed, would there be any chance of Tony posting a copy of his Beatrice THL 2 Ford. I think I must have missed that one along the way. I would also very much like to see his Honda RA271.

Never did the RA271, Rtb, but I can stick the Beatrice Ford on if I haven't done it before on this thread - I'll have a quick check...

Hi AP, I don't know if you've had the stamina to read the whole of this thread, but I posted a cutaway of the 199something BTCC Honda Accord, one of my better illustrations, some time ago. and I don't think I should duplicate it. So that's it, Honda and Toyota. I would have liked to do more, I was always interested in production cars modified for racing, it's that combination of standard structure and the racing bits, the roll-cage, different suspension and all the bits and pieces! Also, most of my racing experiences and memories are of the Tom's Toyota and various Special Saloons over the years.

I know the BMW 320 is attributed to Technical Art but does anyone know who the actual artist would be? For the record I think it is very good and I like the quality of the cutaway.

I actually always thought the car was designated DN1..and the the individual chassis were called 1A.2A.3A etc.
I'll check some period race reports.

Technical Art was (is?) primarily the work of German Norbert Schäfer - another artist who was one of my early favourites and source of inspiration. I've mostly seen German cars from Schäfer's hand, so I'm a bit surprised to see an M26 from him, and in the original (prettier, IMO) version without the nose oil cooler. I suspect it may originally have been published in a German publication like Rallye Racing or German Sport Auto. Was it actually ever raced in that configuration? ISTR that by the 1977 racing season the front oil cooler had appeared.

So he may be the artist for this Bimmer as well.
I've got a Porsche 911 "Whaletail" by Technical Art somewhere I can dig out of my files.

Well, that's interesting! I've checked my 'Little Black Book' - actually brown - and it appears that I visited UOP in Northampton on the 12th Jan. 1973 and again on the 15th, but also, it seems, Silverstone on the 16th! It says UOP and has the job number and hours, but both have been crossed out - very odd. Anyway, it would seem that the chassis I saw and illustrated was DN1/1A, and the drawing was finished on the 7th February.

I still can't remember going to Silverstone to see the car, but I have vivid memories of the Northampton trips, although they have blended seamlessly into one event!

Pfffff, what a time schedule you must have worked on getting all your detail of the tub and the rivetting done.
In comparison it looks like the two other esteemed gents took their task a lot more leisurely.
