Very Nice! I got to see the Turbo 320i run at Daytona with David Hobbs at the wheel. It was very fast, but didn't finish. I had the chance to speak to Mr. Hobbs a couple years latter and he confirmed on what a nice car it was but that it was much too fragile; if I'm not wrong I think that later on it was the basis for the F1 turbo motor?
By coincidence, I have seen both the other two BMWs on the track this year. If anyone hasn't heard the scream of a M1 under hard acceleration they should consider themselves unlucky. They are one of the best sounding motors I've ever heard.

I always liked Bruno Betti's cutaways, 'traditional' brushwork and lots of shiney bits and reflections, but I could never understand why he felt it necessary to cut the glass, after all, you can see through it!

Hello after reading this tread for the past couple of days (I still have not read all posts) I just had to comment.
I am a huge fan of cutaways of Formula 1 cars and feel this is an icredible honour to being able to share a forum with a master like Tony but I also would like to say the same thing about many of the other posters. This is one of the first forums I joined where I am in such awe of the posters that I do not know what to say because I am afraid I will be making a fool of myself. (I am not an expert, just a motor racing enthusiast.) I have loved Tony's cutaways since I first saw them. But I also have to agree with Mr Matthews that Bruno Betti's are just amazing as well.

Your English is very good, Fendt! Thank you for your kind comments about my work, but I am glad that you mentioned 'the other posters' too, as I am just one illustrator, and there is a great deal of very fine work out there, you just have to see what macoran and ibsenop keep finding, plus the links that other posters have added. Glad you like it!

I'm amazed what they've found. There's excellent stuff out there that I never knew existed. I wish I'd seen this years ago. Things I missed that give inspiration for the next job!

I know that the Ferrari 126 C2 was done a few times. D'Alessio (a few versions) , Piola and Betti and maybe some others as well. By the way I think that this Ferrari was one of the best looking F1 cars ever. I will try to see how many different versions of this car I have in books.

Well let me be the first to post a 126C, a Piola.

It is a beautiful car but: where is the explaintaiton of the numbers?

So far I have found 4 different versions.
the above version is that of the prototype/presentation car. D'Alessio did 2 different version (one early 1982 and one late 1982) while Betti did the late 82 version. If any of you know of a Betti early version (with the rocker arm suspension) please post it.

That Eagle is a lovely piece of work. It reminds me why I wanted to be an illustrator in the first place. I bet that's not Letratone, before that, probably Zippertone. I feel however it would look better with an ink blacked in shadow rather than tone, it would make the car stand out more. Lovely nevertheless.

Crikey, Zippertone - that's a name from the past!. Heard of it, but never ever used it.

What I also like about that picture is you can still see some of the pencil work that's not been rubbed away. Seems to give it some extra style

This one might be by Stuart Spencer, possibly now deceased, one-time Jaguar employee. A very nice guy.

The Stuart Spencer I speak of is still around and painting as far as I know, he also had stand space about the same time you and I did the Silverstone Coys shows...but he signs his paintings 'Spencer Trauts' ( 'Stuart' reversed ).

Yes, Spencer Trauts! Do you know, as I was writing about his possible demise I though - he's bound to be alive still! And relieved I am to hear it. I met him a few times when my late friend Geoff Lawson joined Jaguar, but haven't seen him for probably 15 years. He did several Jaguar cutaways.

Rear brake on both sides of the gearbox. You can see them partially hidden by the coilover shocks and axle.

Most recent diggings this past week have uncovered 30 cutaways I thought I had lost.

Speaking of lost......I lost out bidding on a Matthews on E-bay.

But I bought a wrecked Auto Zeitung at a Queen's day rummage sale and look what was inside .....

At first, Marc, I thought you were answering a question that hadn't been asked! Yep, inboard brakes, very fashionable for a time. It's a very nice cutaway, I envy the Betti's in being commisioned to produce colour cutaways long before I made the change, and to still be commisioned!

No British magazine was interested in using my work over a long term, Autosport, and Autocourse, even turned down the opportunity of FREE cutaways - that's the difference beteween British publishing and - mostly - the rest of the World, no appreciation of artwork, especially technical art. As my great friend Gwendolyn Syrup said only the other day over a cup of Earl Grey and a cucumber sandwich, "Tony, dear, dear Tony, you are better off without them, it's pearls before swine, if anyone deserves the 'flu it's those plebeians!" She can be rather forceful when the Press is mentioned, mainly, I think, due to what she considered to be the very harsh treatment that the News of the World gave Honoria, when the rumours started about the many marriages that collapsed in the Conservative Cabinet due to her alleged fondness for Ministers.

Gwendolyn's actual word was 'appetite' but I felt that 'fondness' was kinder, Honoria's heart is in the right place, it's just that the right place happens to be in her - to quote Joseph Heller - divine fulcrum.

That would be Harold Bubb. He used to work for "The Motor" magazine as well.
