Ok Marc--

I just sent full size scans of Rens' cutaway directly to you. I'm afraid to post
one of Fusi's simple Alfa 163 cutaway drawings for fear of stirring Ricart
frenzy. It shares the same kind of inadequate ladder frame as that wonderful
Auto Union sports car cutaway recently posted here, and has a flat 16 engine.
The car wasn't quite completed but the factory drawings had assigned part
numbers. One interesting thing is that Rens drew 3/4 solids from Fusi's cutaways,
reversing the process.

I have a copy in another HK but [oddly] showing more surface detail
throughout the drawing but no wheel spokes. It has a number [11377]
that appears to be an Alfa archive ID.

I would love to find a copy of Ai Raggi X .

Well Seasalt, here's the Rens Biesma 8C, thanks to Carter Hendricks for his scans.

Firstly, thank you Carter and Ibsenop. Great engine detail. Full size (the Rens Biesma 8C) I was a little disappointed at the lack of front suspension detail in such an otherwise excellent cutaway, but Ibsenop's post of the Cavara 6C more than compensated. They are both much appreciated.

That chassis looks ver similar if not the same as the old narrow body 2900B. The wide body looks to have the old narrow scuttle intact under it's new superleggera skin.

The roadster drawn by Biesma and Cavaras has a coupe sibling.

Apologies for the '37 - '48 Alfa obsession.

"Watts my Line? Two generations have been influenced by Lawrie Watts’ cutaway drawings of motorcycles, motorcars, aircraft, Donald Campbell’s Bluebird, Richard Noble’s Thrust, Richard Branson’s epic hot air balloons and even farm machinery.
Long before CAD, the legendary Lawrie was drawing complex
machinery in amazing 3D detail. His meticulous, distinctive style
draws us into the picture, telling a story even though his brief had
been merely to draw the thing. Lawrie is not just an artist, he’s a
designer too. His Royal Enfield-powered Dreamliner looked just
right and was way ahead of its time.
This book provides a fascinating insight into Lawrie's problem-solving through drawing. Anyone interested in how things work will enjoy this voyage through the life, ideas and work of the perceptive and inventive Mr Lawrence Watts."

Perhaps this book?

Rens Biesma’s impression of the 163, thanks Carter. Again the wing under the tail.

Translation from Dutch original: "Open exploded view of the second version of the Corsa Spider (Competition Roadster) from 1939. This is the "ala spessa" the car with stretched flanks. The engine produced 125 hp at 4800 rpm and was equipped with three horizontal carburettors."

The three carburettors on the Giovanni Cavara uncoloured cutaway would indicate the 1939 6C 2500S Corsa Spider. Alfa wheelbases of the time were Corto (short) and Lungo (long). I guess the first version was the (Rens Biesma cutaway) 8C, or may refer to another 6C 2500 without filled flanks. I had always thought the 8C blower version of that body an orphan experiment, but now know there was at least one 6C 2500 carburetted version as well. The roadster was a logical progression from the aerodynamic (Cx of 0.42 was measured, down to 0.38 with air intakes closed) coupe, just cut off that distracting roof and the best looking bit is left to shine.

"The engine in a production 2900B is a dry sump twin Scintilla magneto supercharged straight 8-cylinder 2.9 litre using two Roots type superchargers fed by two updraught Weber carburettors. The output was 180 bhp (134 kW) and was the world's fastest production road car in 1938. (Competition versions gave 220 bhp (164 kW) at 5200 rpm) About 30 short-wheelbase (2800 mm (110.2 in)) 2900B models were built, mostly with spyder bodywork by Touring and Farina, about ten Lungo, long wheelbase, (3000 mm (118.1 in)) models were built and only five with the Mille Miglia bodywork also by Touring of Milan. All were coachbuilt to the owners specification, so few, if any, are exactly alike." Wikipedia "Alfa 8C"

Probably far too much information. Both those images are gold.

A lovely picture of a iconic car smile.gif

What I do find strange is that the reflections on the bodywork seem to look as if the car is in a studio or workshop under fluorescent lights. It's as though he's copied the photos he took at the time and not bothered to make it a bit more natural.

Out of interest, is Lawrence Watts related to Nicholas Watts?

I have the original of John Hostler's drawing here - there ia a photo below rather than a scan as it's currently framed ...

The drawing was used twice, once on 12 July 1973 in Autocar but without any colouring, and again on 1st May 1974 in Classic Car, this time coloured as illustrated below and this came from the original Hostler artwork that I own. The car in the drawing is some 25 inches across:

This thread is amazing, the range of subjects and the skill are remarkable.

I have been very interested in the gearbox stuff from TM as these things seldom get much attention.

Now for the tough request!!

Is there anywhere a cutaway of the notorious Lotus "Queerbox" which had the gears selected via an internal push rod?

As you may recall it came in two iterations - the original 1957/9 version for the front engined loti and a second attempt by Chapman for the Lotus 79. He didn't give up.

Somewhere there may even be a Goggomobil cutaway ( workshop manual?) as IIRC the queerbox borrowed its concept from the Goggo.

Ah, the 'Queerbox'! 'There's none so queer as The Queebox, lad, don' 'ee get too close if'n yer see's one - 'tes loike that cockatrice that lives in them woods, one glance 'n' yer stone, lad, cold dead stone!'

Sorry, where was I?

I would have loved to have (cor, complex grammatical construction or what?) done a cutaway of that, but the nearest I got to one was seeing Arthur Birchall building one, all the while a-cursing, next to him, a works longitudinal section, gears, shaft, and lots and lots of little balls! This was the later one, meant for the T79.

'The cockertrice, lad? You never heard of the cockatrice? 'Tes loike the Queerbox but lighter, in weight but not in colour, which is subfusc and brindled, but neither is as bad as, is as bad as - come close, for I must whisper, sayin' it loud is to call it here - as the Goggomobil! Bugger, it heard me, run boy, run 'til you can run no more, I'll........'

Just stumbled upon this rather grubby photo - me 35 years ago, having just finished the colour version of the 1974 Tyrrell 007, posing infront of LAT's jumbo light-box, made I think, by Laurie Morton, possibly with help from John Dunbar. Big enough to lay out about 20 full-length processed films.

I just received the latest issue of Drag Racer magazine (September 2009). It contains a splendid cutaway by Tom West of John Force's current funny car. West also had cutaways of an 80's Don Prudhomme FC in the July 2009 issue, and a 1970's Jungle Jim FC in the May 2009 issue. I do not thing it is appropriate to post them here, but if you can find the issues, they are worth a look.

Would you, Tony, or anyone else, have a cutaway of the Gurney-Weslake Eagle? We used to have an engine-less, Scuderia Filipinetti liveried Eagle sitting in our garage in Canada for many years, until it was sold to the Collier Collection to be restored! I was young - probably about 10 years old - when it left our house, so it has always held a mythical place in my memory.

EDIT: Just found the Bennett cutaway posted way back on page 30-something. Maybe someone knows of a colour cutaway or other B&W's?

Quite possibly you're correct - I was quoting what was written in pencil on the back of the drawing with various sigs and stamps before it was framed and it clearly says 'Autocar 2nd July' but it also says 'Autocar 12th July' further down, maybe it was moved? I do have lots of photos but not sure if the larger ones make a complete drawing - I'll check when I get back from a Goodwood track day this evening.

While we are on the subject, I've always wanted a suitable caption for the pic below so everyone feel free please - one of those moments that just happens.... The car is a Proteus replica:

I haven't seen a colour cutaway, and I don't think Jim Allington did a B&W version - strangely - however, I could be wrong. Perhaps I should google the auction details for his drawinggs, if they are still available, and see if the Eagle is listed.

Rancethebus, macoran or ibsenop may be able to help!

Edited to say I have tried, but can't find an inventory, it may still be there somewhere, but I don't have the time to peruse any further this a.m.

Take my word for it, it's the T1F/101 2.7 litre Coventry Climax FPF 4cyl mount Gurney ran in 1966/early 67 before the Weslake V12 engined car hit the track.
Later entered by Al Pease in the 67 and 68 Canadian and U.S GPs.

But….

Suddenly it dawned on me……

I was going to post this cutaway late last night, when all of a sudden I remembered something.
I more or less jumped in the car…..ridiculous ! how does one jump in a car ?. I mean I was in a damn hurry to get in as it was going to be a trip… an enjoyable one as always in an 18 year old Honda Accord with a tuned Legend 2.7 V6 in it.
Off and away to the beautiful town of Troyes, where I still have a Shurgard.
Driving through the night, I suddenly remembered I would have to report to work this morning.
Bugger it, I decided I'd call the boss at about eight and tell him I wasn't coming in.
The blast down to Troyes from Rotterdam is really fabulous at night. Check the police channel for the mobile speed traps…and off you go.
Rotterdam->Breda->Antwerp->Lille->Reims. The roads are silky smooth, and the heavy shod Accord,
225/50R18 fronts and 255/50R18 rears ( yes I can get a cigarette paper between the tyre wall and the fender) , 50mm lowered suspension on springs wound by Heiki in Krimpen aan den IJssel (town near where I live) Koni yellow sports dampers set full hard.
I love the damn little beast !!! Throttle it full in a sharp corner and I'll even get a hint of oversteer !
great in a "traction" as the French say.
I phoned Jean-Pierre at "Le Pan de Bois" in Bucheres, and told him I would be touching down at two-ish, he agreed to leave the keys to my room aside the second flower pot from the left wall of the parking lot ( as he used to in the past, when I worked in France).
The Pan de Bois is owned by Jean-Pierre’s father, a “master” butcher.
You don’t tell him how you want your piece of beef done ……..a-point/ bien cuit or saignant, he neither will ask you how you want it prepared……….he looks at the cut and decides how it should be done… you… paying customer…sit down..shut up and eat !!
Well… I get there, retrieve “mes clefs” and go to my room……….and I should’ve known.
As in the past when I have come in late at night, J.P had set up the oven on a timer and my favourite
dauphin gratinois, haricots verts grillee, buttery “mange tous”….(the French don’t even know what that is !! It is as French as “Chop Suey” is Chinese !) were ready to eat as was my prime cut.
In the fridge a bottle of Epineul rose…..damn! that was some sort of breakfast at nearly three in the morning!!
But I digress….a good sleep in and start off to the Shurgard at 10-ish…. To find what I thought (damn risk to think that much Marc !!!, leave thinking to a horse…it has bigger brain !) I might maybe have but which I am not really sure of….
The Encyclopedia of Super Cars. Volume 8. Page 1817 and 1818……..
Here it is the Jag XJ13 !!!

I just can’t remember what I do or do not have.
Oh well ! you now know I run an old Honda Accord!

edit....I think I was a bit tired when I wrote this up...does it make sense ?

Hello all ,

My very first post to congratulate and thank all the contributors to this amazing thread , specially Mr Matthews. It's really wonderfull to read his tips about his work , and viewing some wips is a must for an amateur like me.
I remenber "photocopying" my firsts B.Betti's cutaways almost 30 years ago , on books i borrowed at the city's library. Mr Matthews artwork should be more rarely published in France because i really discovered his talent here.

Marc's trip is the ultimate spark that decided me to post a few words here....at last i discovered that some people are defintly more crazy than i'm about cars , books of cars , images of cars inside books of cars , and having troubles to store this books !

Ho , btw it's "Gratin Dauphinois" and not "Dauphin Gratinois" ( wich sound good too i agree ) , just like if you talked about roastoes potated or something like that....

Just to stay a little more with the french touch , here's one of the most famous french rally-trainer car
