No Esprit, but one was posted a few days ago, and no Elise, sorry. I did one Bedford truck, but the transparency is too big to scan - I may have a brochure with it, I'll have a look.

The question ( for me at least ) is... : which Noel do i have the pleasure to meet here ? Maybe an astonishing " random " ( don't if this is accurate for "hasard" in french ) , would make me laugh for a couple of hours.
This could be the definitive evidence the virtual world is even smaller than the real one.

Edit : About your french lessons , why not starting an Alpine or a Matra cutaway ?.....A Rondeau would be perfect ! biggrin.gif

It is tiny, smaller than a quark. I don't have room to stand up!

As for Alpine, Matra or Rondeau - too late I fear...

Nothing too special in that, since the original type 14 Elite had inboard rear discs when it was designed in 1957, and over 1000 of them built make it a production car.

Thanks Ibsen. James Allington did a cutaway of the Elite, too, and the illustrations for the Workshop Manual - he finished it before I started my apprenticeship with him, but every now and then an illustration would have to be modified slightly. He also owned one, which I passengered in for many miles, a bit alarming initially as it was LH drive, later changed. I seem to remember it was either full- or part payment for services rendered...

I was not with him the day a refuse truck reversed into it in the centre of Old Stevenage. He managed to get it back to the studio, a rectangular crush wound in the nose - Jim had blown the horn, but the horn was one of the first things to die, a bit like the bugler shot mid-retreat! The truck driver said "Ah, sorry mate, I know how you feel - I've done it before!"

An interesting site, Languedoc, it brought back some memories! The Roy Huxley cutaway of the Escort has a nice feel, but it lacks detail - like some I've had to do, probably in a rush for not much money!

If you scroll down halfway there are programme/race entry details for Silverstone 1955 Intl Trophy meeting and on the gallery page there is stuff from the 1954 British Empire Trophy meeting at Oulton park, incl a couple of interesting photos. Also under Lotus in galleries is a good colour shot of Chris Barber's CB23 Elite.

Yes Languedoc, indeed a good site!!
Interesting to see another Roy Huxley cutaway. Anybody know if he is British, and which mags did his work get published in?

British, a regular artist for Airfix, and may have worked for Eagle comic. I haven't checked, so I'm relying, as usual, on memory...

Just stumbled across this, hidden in an album of 5x4 trannies that I thought was lost for ever... White, black, blue and red pencil on blue paper, a touch of white gouache for high-lights and white with a yellow top-coat for 'Goodyear Eagle' - the magazine that used it (Racer?) faded the blue out to white, which was better than solid blue.

You can't use regular black graphite pencils, they give a silvery-grey finish, even 6B's, so I used an Ivory Black Derwent pencil which gives a true black. The other point you have to watch is that if you press the outline through an overlay, stilus marks can cause a problem as they are indents in the colour paper, and show up as base-colour lines when you put pencil over them. Dunno what the answer is - a light-box, perhaps. I only did a few illustrations using this technique, this being by far the biggest at A2.

I always enjoyed these Autocar spreads, with a cutaway and the odd sketch spread around the pages
showing details. Vic Berris in the Autocar showing the 1966 Ferrari 312, driven that year by Surtees,Parkes and Bandini.

How fitting that the only other cutaway of his I have seen (and posted somewhere above) is of an F1 AAR Eagle.

You're right Marc, it makes you realise how good those spreads looked, and how uninteresting magazines are now, despite much better reproduction.

Tony, your blue Cart car is fantastic. I like this technique (drawing over coloured paper) very much.

Thanks Ibsen - it is an interesting technique, but limited, in my hands, anyway! If I was to do it again I would use a lighter, less obtrusive colour. It is a very old style, I'm not an art historian, but I think it pre-dates Allbrecht Durer, and I have seen some beautiful portraits and landscapes using pencil or chalk on a tinted ground.

If one looks closely at the photo of the ferrari, it looks like it's on slicks. Or is it just that my eyes are going?

How odd! You're right, I keep thinking I can pick out a hint of tread on the rears, but then again - no, I can't. It says 'R7s will be used...', not that they are on the car. I was under the impression that Dunlop Racing tyres of that period had moulded treads, not hand cut - in which case they can't be un-cut tyres used just to get the chassis off the ground.

Another bodywork swop - Weird the way as soon as the new body is laid over the original colour scheme, it's as if the first one had never existed. It is possible to make out tabs of white watercolour paper covering the original second aerial and the larger mudflaps of the works car.

@Daytona 935: sorry, i am not noël from PSA ... About Endurance cutaways, sorry again, my "collection" is essentially build up of gp cars and engines (from wright's books illustrated by Tony, piola 's annual technical analysis books, and others ...) ... fortunately, this topic gives (among others things) the amazing opportunity to discover new artists and branches of cutways.

Pity those smooth looking Nissans don't click out larger, but nice to see the transitions between the two.
Except that you forgot to change the spare wheel rim design on the Castrol job !!! naughty !
And do my eyes decieve ( euhm,...i after e except after c ,...does that really look right? ) me, or is the fuel filler on the Castrol job an isty bitsy lower and more foreward than on the works car.

Well spotted, Marc! The spare wheel involved time and effort I couldn't afford, if I'd known when I did the original works car that I would have to turn it into a different car I would have made provisions...

You are right about the filler - I can't remember what happened there, it was either a mistake or there was a legitimate reason for it - just dunno. It is slightly lower, but not further forward, it looks it because the silver of the outer edge of the filler disappears against the white panel.

I can only recall having scanned it from a French magazine, it looks to me like an E.T.A.I cutaway.

Anyway here is another unsigned cutaway, the JS7 Ligier, it wasn't even dedicated to any artist in the text of the accompanying article,
but it has to be a Serge Bellu rendering.

Marc, the Ligier JS7 is a Serge Bellu drawing.

Renault RS01 unsigned too. I tink is is a Sergio Baratto job, like the Ferrari 312 T2 with drivers posted recently (Post #2230).

The P. Grace Renault RS01 cutaway is the E.T.A.I. cutaway - it exists as both a line monochrome and a full colour version, but the working drawing is the same. It's the other one that looks very 'British motoring periodical' in style to me...

And I agree with all who miss the cutaway spreads with dispersed technical detail vignettes - computer generated artwork may be very slick and impressive, but it just doesn't have the same appeal as the old hand-made, man-made drawings of our youff...

I feel certain that I've got a 35mm trannie of it lurking somewhere, Anders, I'll keep looking. It cheered me up to find an album of 5"x4" trannies, even if most were copies, I don't like losing things. Somewhere I have a magazine cutting of the cutaway, but quite small and in B&W...

There was a B&W of your 792 in Autosport celebrating the 10th anniversary of March - I do recall seeing it in glorious colour (I loved that ICI livery!) in a German magazine, either Rallye Racing or Sport Auto. (I also loved the 2-litre F2 cars...too bad you apparently only got to do the 75 Martini and the 79 March...)

Of course I stand corrected, the P.Grace is the ETAI, I just thought the other one looked ETAI-ish.

Well, I am a brand new member of this site. I normally would be pretty frustrated and annoyed right now, because the search engine said this topic had something with the 917/30 in it. I just finished going through all 62 pages, and I am........THRILLED. I never saw anything on the 917/30, but I just spent over an hour viewing (pretty quickly, too) the wonderful drawings of so many outstanding artists. Many I have seen over the past 45 years or so, but many are totally new to me. This is a rare pleasure of seeing so many great illustrations by Tony Matthews, Bill Bennett, Bruno Betti, and too many more to list here.

I see now I must start over again from the first page, and properly consume and digest all of the wonderful information that is in this particular topic alone. If anyone can quickly point me any of the 917/30 items, I would be grateful.

I also started a new topic on info I need on the Mark Donohue CAM2 917/30. If you could find time to check it out (and maybe help us), that would just be the an extra cherry on my sundae.

Again, thank you everyone for making this particular topic such a fun one to explore!

Hi Cam2, Bruno Betti did the Sunoco 917/30, I did the Neste Oy 917/10 in B&W, which I think has been posted here - it's got to the point where I can't remember exactly what I have posted! I don't think BB's very good /30 has been posted, but copies are floating about, I may even have one hidden away.

Time for a little accounting...

Our august TNF member, Tony Mathews, joined us approximately one year ago. I've checked TM's profile and the exact date of his coming onboard is not available but as it was September of 2008 and as this is mid-month a year on, let's assume that it's in and around this very date. Well... What have we got? What have we to celebrate and honour?

In that year...365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months, call it what you will..., Tony has contributed no less than 5016 posts. WOWZER!!! That's just incredible!

Here's the numbers on posting frequency...

Per Month: 5016/12 = 418.

Per Week: 5016/52 = 96+.

Per Day: 5016/365 = 13+.

Per Hour: 5016/8760 = 0.572.

Now that's prodigious by any standard. Tony has contributed so many fine images here in the Cutaways thread but elsewhere as well, of course.

Congratulations, Tony. You're a wonder! smile.gif

And not to short-shrift others who've made this thread a marvel, hats off to Ibsenop and Marc, too. Thanks so much, fellas. wave.gif
