Volkswagen Beetle cutaway/cross-section history 1950-1973. Some extremely subtle development differences.

In most cases year on year the differences are quite subtle, but they are present nonetheless, be it a variation in the shape/size of the fuel tank or a development of the air cleaner/engine on the very early models. However I think it gets to the point where eventually it is just the luggage that varies.

These are all factory/works illustrations. Definitely something intriguing about the notion of a house style and/or anonymous artist/artists at work on these, deep within the bowels of a manufacturer.

Seeing as there are some aircraft and plenty of road cars on this amazing thread, I thought I'd add this picture I found in an old Truck magazine. I recently sold a load of old Autosport's to one of the forum members and a pile of Truck mags were unearthed too.

My uncle used to operate heavy wreckers and had a Scania 141 which I remember going for a ride in when he'd just bought it. It would have been in about 1976-77 when I was 4-5. We went around Warrington with me perched on the bunk. (pre H&S paranoia)

These are great. I have tried to research a few, especially the Corcel and it seems mostly they were unique to the South American market, with a few variations produced for North America, but certainly nothing really equivalent in Europe.

Ford Corcel (based on Wikipedia)

When Ford acquired Willys, the latter was developing a project in partnership with Renault, the project "M". This project gave rise to the Renault 12 in France, and with a different body, the Corcel in Brazil.
Launched initially as a 4-door sedan in 1968 and then as a coupe in 1969.
The factory made some changes in the overall look of the car in 1973, leaving him a bit like the Ford Maverick. The engines have become the 1.4 used in the GT line, known as XP motor. In 1975 the design was again reworked, increasing the resemblance to the Maverick, especially in the rear.
Until 1977, this model was getting the finishing touches, though retaining the same look, until the launch of the 1978 line - was the Corcel II, with basically the same mechanical elements but with a completely redesigned body, which in no way resembled the previous model. In 1985, he received the front of the Del Rey and some stylistic touches, besides losing the term "II" of the name. This model existed until the year 1986, when was closed its production.

Just as a random side issue, here is an image of a 1/18 scale model I own of a 3.0 CSL from the BMW Museum. It is vaguely related to technical drawing. wink.gif

It might not be a signature. Possibly it could be:

DerGlasmotor = Der Glas motor = The Glas Engine

DieGlasmotor = Die Glas motor = The Glas Engine

Or something similar. The dawing Looks a bit like a Schlenzig or Siegfried Werner.

I hope I'm wrong though, because that would be a great signature to be floating around.

I read it as "Debusmann 58". Debusmann is a German name, uncommon but not entirely unknown. Germans of an older generation sometimes place a horizontal line above a "u" in order to distinguish it from an "n".

Is there a publisher of technical working drawings and/or prints of them?

Full disclosure: My background is in art and communications. I'm interested in technical drawings because a) I'm from Detroit, worked in the Rouge plant as did all my relatives... motor oil runs in our veins, and b) I've always teetered on the border between science & technology on the one hand and art and aesthetics on the other. For example, I started college intending to get degrees in nuclear physics and ended up with them in fine arts.

The point is, technically I am not qualified to contribute to this thread as most of you are. But from another perspective, art and aesthetics, I have an appreciation and admiration that even most practitioners seem unconcerned about. In an earlier post, I compared some of Tony Matthews' working drawings to some Leonardo drawings.

Maybe it's my own narrow perspective but it seems to me there must be a market among those who appreciate fine art for reproductions of these technical drawings. I think especially many of the working drawings are beautiful works worthy of being displayed as art. In my admittedly limited search, I do not find anyone who publishes such reproductions. I've found some reproductions of finished works, but not for working drawings. Are there any?

Here's another example to support my view that your working drawings are works of art. In an earlier post #4228, Duc-Man posted a link to a Rex Burnett site. John Burnett (son?) appears to be selling prints directly... and maybe that's the way it should be.

Very good NPP up.gif

I have found a 'H. injure Debusmann' associated with the production of a black and white cutaway of the 1936 BMW 326 engine produced in 1941. The actual signature is too small to make out, but the coincidence in this case is surely overwhelming.

I'm afraid it is more of a catalogue entry, with an extremely small thumbnail. But, thanks to you, we now have a name and an era in which he was definitely active 1941 -58. It is likely that Ibsen has more and better quality scans of his work to come, I hope. But I think you have pretty much nailed it.

The entry in its original context.

BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Munich:

"auf A4 gefaltet, absolute Rarität! with a large poster (118 x 82 cm) color view, and b / w cross section through the engine of the BMW 326 of 1936, signed by H. injure Debusmann, 1941, at the kinks and folded at the bottom with tears, on A4, rarity ! sonst nicht angeboten. otherwise not available."

Glas was purchased by BMW in 66, if 'Debusmann' was working for BMW in 1941 and Glas in 1958 then that probably rules himout as being a staff employee of either company?
