I had the great pleasure of meeting Lawrence (Lawrie) Watts on several occasions the last one was when he signed for me a copy of his excellent book "Watts my Line?" For those of you that are interested I think it can be purchased through www.redlinebooks.co.uk. It is fascinating because it covers all spectrums of cuttaway illustration

One of my favourite Lawrence Watts works is the rather humble 1976 Suzuki RG500 motorcycle engine.

Could I ask you Mr Spencer, if during your time at the Jaguar Design Studio, you were responsible for a very nice poster. If I remember correctly, it depicted an XJ13 sports racing prototype travelling from left to right along the top of the image with a Jaguar (animal) seated in the foreground?

Hi Werks the Suzuki RG500 squar four is on page 23 of Watts my Line.

Please call me Stuart I am a very simple "Brummie" and yes I did an illustration of the XJ13 the centre piece was the engine and the Jaguar cat was supposed to be leaping over it but I was never comfortable with the composition. smile.gif
simplebrother
I recently stitched together an illustration from 100 Greatest Books that both of my editions attribute to Caarl Knowles.

Lotus Esprit Turbo (type 82) - 1985

However, when I went to tuck it away in its folder I noticed another very similar (I can't see a difference other than color tones) that I had attributed to Andrew Dibben.

Lotus Esprit Turbo (type 82) - 1980-87

I am fairy sure of the illustrator for the second one because I also have a black and white that is signed "Andrew Dibben".

Lotus Esprit Turbo (type 82) - 1980-87

Can anyone clear up my confusion?

I remember that particular illustration very well Stuart. It was probably the first time that I had seen such a car drawn like that in profile. I remember thinking, this is different, 'there is a lot more going on here than the usual advertising fare/poster campaigns that we usually see for other things'. I liked it very much.

Similarly, the thing that I like about that particular Lawrence Watts, Suzuki RG500 motorcycle engine, is the way in which it appears to have been first dismantled and then laid out across a table, he then seems to have just sat down and drawn it almost as a kind of still life.

You know, you mention that you are from the hallowed automotive/engineering stomping ground that is the Black Country, well, my Dad is currently still known as 'Brum' despite him actually emerging from Wolverhampton! The perils of life on the South coast I'm afraid!

Thanks - that explains where I got the two Andrew Dibben's illustrations, but doesn't explain the illustration being attributed to Caarl Knowles in 100 Great Cars. My editions are '88 and '94 - pages 220-221. Is it the same in versions or editions distributed in other than the US? Some of the illustrations I have seen here and elsewhere are clearly different than mine - bar across the top is different, other minor differences that can be seen in single scans - perhaps it is an error that was corrected in other edition?

That book sometimes credits the magazine instead of the illustrator (e.g., Quattroruote instead of Bruno Betti), but looks like an oops.

Sometimes an illustrator who colours an existing illustration is credited, by design or error, with the complete job. I don't think this is really correct, although, as I have posted before, my Cooper Climax colour cutaway was based on Jim Allington's earlier B&W cutaway. I agonised, very briefly, over this, but as I had paid Jim handsomely for the use, and I was in a panic to go on holiday - and, sometimes, huge complications are caused by giving publishers too much information - I kept schtum. If I was to do it again, I would give acknowledgement. However, so much of my work has been plagiarized without asking or giving credit, that I have become more or less used to it.

Andrew Dibben did that cutaway whilst in the employ of Lotus Cars, so in effect it was their copyright, or at least they held sway over AD's work. It may be that it was coloured by another Lotus employee, but we may never know unless AD enlightens us, which is unlikely, but you never know...

By the way Andrew Dibben has a website of his landscapes, which I think are terrific. Check 'em out.

Now that is what I meant about colouring! Not done by me, not done with my permission, but my name still on it! Odd. It was used in B&W in Peter Wright's book 'Formula One Technology', published by the SAE, still selling, slowly...

Werks thanks for the kind remarks, when given a management position I was unable to draw/paint in the day so to save my sanity produced artwork in my free time the XJ13 being one of them, this is possibly why it doesn't have a corporate face.
Very interesting your remark re Lawrence Watts, he once told me that he sometimes DID approach an "exploded" engine drawing as a still life arranging the components more fluid than assembled.

Re your Dad I worked with many wonderful Black Country people and to call them a "Brummie" was not the way to remain on their Christmas card list!

It is very interesting to hear the background context of that particular image in this way, and to have it confirmed as not being part of any corporate sanctioned work (for want of a better phrase). I think this must be why that particular image has stayed with me.

That really is a fascinating insight. It completely makes sense now. Because it feels more like viewing a couple of apples, a block of cheese and a bottle of wine laid out on a table, or even perhaps an amount of engine components about to be cleaned on a Saturday afternoon, as opposed to having everything sort of hovering up in the air.

Two wonderful insights Stuart! Thank you very much.

It has been pretty active in here, while I have been at the California Hot Rod Reunion. I had a couple of more of these sitting that I was going to put out with the four that I will include, but I thought I should get these on the way.
Stepping from the line drawings that I have been posting lately, I pulled some of the color things that I had for you.
This starts with a David Kimble piece that was done when Dodge got back into NASCAR in 1990. This is the Dodge Intrepid NASCAR ... looks like the prototype that I drew for Action Performance for their diecast of the vehicle, as this illustration was part of their special Automobiles Magazine insert for the program.

Second up is a Ford Duratec V8 that appeared in a special Insert for the Lincoln CS, again by David Kimble.

This is a piece out of Car Craft Magazine, June, 1971. The Tommy Grove Mustang Funny car is illustrated by Shusei Nagaoka. Nagaoka was at a studio called Design Maru, in Los Angeles at the time, but had established a reputation for great record album artwork, which was his main work at the time. I know that you can find him online, but there is no reference that I found for this automotive stuff that he was doing.
Last piece for now.
