I have a large copy of this file, and show it as being done by Martin Donavan. Think this was in one of those greatest car things and I had looked it up before.

How did you find that out in the end?

I was reading a book that had a line drawing of the 1960 car showing the batteries at the back of the car, remembering your post I went through the rest of my Bluebird stuff and came up with these.

And you guys think that the cutaway artists are OCD ... talk about taking all the mystery out of life ... smile.gif

Good find Keke, but If I may give a word of warning.

When I was working in the FarEast I subscribed to the Japanese Car Graphic, if only because the motoring content
would ease/help me along with my Japanese linguistic study. I got to be pretty good at Katekane.
Just to explain, Katekane is a form of Japanese which takes short cuts with European words and names. Brabham thus becomes bra-bum, Lotus becomes Ro-tus,
This may go a way to explaining that when you use a Google translator to translate a Japanese bit into Ingrish, they translate Brabham as brassiere-bum.

But as for the mag... gents.. it isn't worth the $110 at all, unless you get a kick out of all the Chevy/Ford/Pontiac/Buick/Olds B&W pics.
The set of Allington cutaways in the CG issue was actually very bad, I was glad Car and Driver came along a month later with a better set in their magazine.

edit to say, only 10 pages full glossy print, remainder is with a lot of "shine through", or of old 60's smudgy newspaper quality.

But I grant the guy the fact that he is doing him damdest to sell the mag !!

Well, I never knew those illustrations went as far as Japan! My stippling on the tyres, I notice... For a long time that was as close as I got to racing car cutaways.

It has been a bit quiet for a couple of days, so thought I would throw out a couple of the Haynes cover illustrations out there for you. All four are Terry Davey pieces.
We start with a couple of Jaguar offerings, starting with the XJ from 1979. Figure we will do something for der Englanders out there ...

When I think of cutaways what comes to mind are ones like the above or like Tony's wonderful colored illustrations.

However, my files also include many of the more modern (and to me more mundane, less enthralling, yet still interesting) that are similar to this Renault...

If you have similar interests and time to look, there are about 160 such illustrations, most the same 1920x1440 pixel size, at http://www.haoto.cn/images/19201440/jiaotong. They are unidentified and unattributed, but they are larger than most similar images found on the web. The link above is a list of sub-directories - those captioned "CarClarity" followed by a number are all cutaways. Other sub-directories listed don't have cutaways.

How frustrating - you can get very close, but not with an overall word that is pronounceable! It might be Pablo Picasso's one and only foray into technical illustration, after wich he is reported as saying "Enough! Too hard, I go back to what I know. Ah, my new model! Clothes off please, as quick as you like..."
