Bit more organised now at the new (old) house, still some junk to unpack. Putting this stuff out around the rest of the house often induces frowns and barely-muffled displeasure from my dearest, so usually ends up piled in here

plenty of room for more junk I think...

My living room walls are filled with 78 photos of everything from Gary Gabelich setting the LSR to Peter DePaolo in my motel room at the Speedway motel to Walker Evans bouncing across the Baja Desert to Curtis Turner busting his ass in Atlanta, plus 21 die cast with not a rear engine car in the bunch.

I tried to show and explain the photos on my web page and damed if it didn't take 10 stories to get the job completed. The 10 are listed as My Room Full Of Memories, which it truly is .

I think you need more space smile.gif

What is that Alfa 8c35 or 12c36 hanging on the wall at the left?

Not much of a museum here and the motor sport books only occupy two small shelves. I have plenty of model cars still in boxes.
Right now, the living-room walls are covered with Classic Team Lotus calendars and with posters of The Italian Job, Audrey Hepburn, Steve McQueen, Castelotti, Fangio, Birkin, Petoulet and Behra. Above and next to my desk I have drawings of 1920s-30s Bugattis, Alfas, Hispano-Suizas, Delages, etc.

A couple of pictures I had on my walls in Brussels. Now they are still wrap in boxes but they will go on walls asap we move to a house:

This one was in grand-father bedroom when he was a kid:

If my wife allows it, I plan to make some re-prints of old racing pictures and turn the walls black&white drunk.gif

Who made the yellow Veritas model??
oldclassiccar
@dretceterini

the Alfa up on the wall is a flat metal thingy, one of three I've got up there on different subjects. The other is a pre-war Mercedes, the third I'm not sure about. It reminded me of an 8c-35 (but could be a 12c, close enough) so I bought it, at a vintage autojumble I think. They are modern, and not of period though (sadly)

cheers, Rick.

Yes, I am nuts too, the house is FULL of stuff all over the place... signed memorabilia, old toys, tin cars, pedal cars, slot cars, and so on. And the books, ALL over in 3 separate libraries. And the magazines... and photos... and films...

And we have not even got to the race cars and racing memorabilia yet...

About a hundred or so of suits, gloves, boots, helmets...

But have no fear, I got this now under control. Yes, I promised my dear wife never to buy anything new ever again. Of course, ALL this stuff is old and exempt. lol.gif

Somebody please lock me up before I hurt myself... :\

I LOVE those old Japanese tinplate toys. They had so much flavor and such a quality feel... no plastic junk anywhere, all metal, separate stamped sheet-metal plated chrome strips and gold emblems, quality automotive paint... along with great graphics on the boxes. They were like $2.00 at Woolworth in 1962... cat.gif

Also LOVE old American slot cars. They made the BEST, they looked so much better than what Scalextric ever dreamed to be. Real magnesium chassis and wheels, beautiful bodies, great detail, fabulous graphics...

And there are still plenty of them around, which makes collecting them really fun!

Very interesting thread! I thought I was the only one trying to build a personal library/archive. As I have only been at it for 20 years, my efforts so far are not as advanced as those pictured in this thread, but I have plans! Unfortunately my camera no longer works, plus I'm in the midst of cleanup/re-organization so I can't show what I have but my "library" seems closest to Martin Roessler's efforts but on a smaller scale.

I'm curious as to what the libraries/office/den of the professional historians/writers/Jenkinson look like compared to us amateurs.

I don't know who made the Veritas but it's made of wood (so is the orange 166) with a Polisti or Burago BMW chassis, I've found it in my grand-father stuff.

Erm, bit embarrassed. The pic was taken a while ago, along with a whole lot of others around the house, to burn onto a CD and file at work in case of an insurance claim. We're in a prime bushfire area here.

I do not want to put a dampener on these displays of collections, (mine is like most of these, and the replacement value of some of the books etc is high, ignoring Palawan stuff ) but it is a very prudent move to photograph all your stuff, itemising some if necessary, and to make up a full inventory of all your books and memorabilia and, in case some low life steals it, or trashes it because the books are too heavy, the sentences/paragraphs are too long and the words too erudite for such vermin despite lots of pictures etc, or there is an accident in the house.

The replacement value of some things can be quite horrific, ignoring sentimental value etc., or items signed by now deceased drivers etc.

Make sure you have a back up disc with all your photos on, kept locked away separately. Better safe.................

very good point, I did take some pics a while back, but some proper organisation and cataloguing is long overdue (racing programmes being a case in point, I know roughly how many there are, split pre- and post-war, but exact details and circuits - nah). Perfect little job for these wintry evenings!!

For a few years now I've been adding car models, magazines, and race programmes, as well as other substantial acquisitions, to a program called Asset Manage. It runs off a self-installed segment of Microsoft Access (?) and offers many useful features, in addition to a straightforward listing of items and pertinent descriptors. This is a typical display:

Big one is a 100+K file

The images are links that open the Microsoft viewer. If large pictures are in the database, the smaller ones distort.

Queries are simple to generate, and will show lists based on nearly any characteristic you've included in the file. It just told me there are 160 (of 920) items with "Ferrari" in the description.

I'm one of the least ept maths users I know, but this product seems to make all the useful moves in showing and storing what I think I ought to know. Now I just need to find the time and inclination close enough together to add the remaining (estimated) 500 items.

See the blurb for "Pro" versions of Asset Manage and its cousins; the "home" version is less expensive.

There are other such programs for Windows and other systems, usually overlays on one database program or another. Many can be found on eBay. I tried to use another, cheaper one, but by the time I found out I needed help, the vendor was no longer interested. Asset Manage is not perfect, but has done what I wanted so far.

Of course a skillful user of the underlying programs will be able to make his own interface.

Any road, I try to add a few items each week (as in scanning, there is joy and drudgery in the work), and back up the critical files to two separate drives and two CD-ROM disks, one set stored at my daughter's house. I think I mentioned in another thread that I believe the external USB or Fire Wire hard drives are essential to any valued information preservation. A couple years ago the notorious Cedar fire stopped a mile or so north of us. When we evacuated I could shut down the computers, detach the drives, and have all the essential matters packed with us in a volume the size of a hardcover book or two, within five minutes or less. I hope never to need the backups, but better drudge now than whinge later.

I have my library ("Collection of 150+ motoring books") and my collection of models ("Collection of100+ model cars") listed as separate high value items on my home insurance. I also have inventories of both on my computer at work to back up the valuations if I am unfortunate enough to have to make a claim.

I have this thread. wink.gif

I have never taken the time to list all my "kollectible" cr*p. I just enjoy the sight of it, the hunting, the trades with friends... I have about six dozen different programs to do the listing, but I never will. So of course, guess what, I just bought duplicate books. Fortunately they make wonderful Xmas gifts... smile.gif

Now I know that PD has got it for fastest lap in F3 race at Albi on October 20, 1968. The race was won by Henri Pescarolo and DP was off after problems with the carburetor. In fact Depaller and Cevert have had the same lap time which was finally becomes fastest lap, Cevert gave the trophy to Patrick.

Lucky you indeed. This trophy is the first evidence I see of the 1968 "Trophée France-Espagne de Formule 3", a F3 series based on a handful or so of F3 races held in France and Spain ; i.e. the RACE (Real Automovil-Club de Espana) mention and the Spanish denomination of the race on the cup. You wouldn't by any chance have the standings for this series Stefan ? smile.gif wave.gif
Great thread and nice pics. You guys are soooo tidy compared to me. No way I will post the messy thing hiding my books and stuff (no die-cast, but a few memorabilia). blush.gif
Richard if you read these lines - I guess I'm still responsible for some of the mess at your place ! Vitesse is kindly sheltering my complete collection of MotorSport magazines since, well, too many years now... smile.gif blush.gif . Once I get them back I think I'll have to throw the fridge or the bed away I'm afraid...

I thought it was a shame to let this thread disappear. Unfortunately most of my collection is in boxes at the moment due to redecorating, but here are a few items that I haven't put away yet:

Louis Mr. F1
these pictures were taken about a year ago, now i've moved my collection to my living room, with more display area. As you'll see, my collection comprise of stuff post 80s. I'd love to expand to earlier era, but that'd mean spending even more money on my passion.

you guys have some very nice racing drawings on the wall, i'd love to get some.

I've just read this thread and it made me smile to realise that I'm not the only one.
My study is too full even to embarrass myself by posting a picture here.
I've just dragged my girlfriend in to see some of your images and she just shook her head knowingly.
When I mentioned that some people here also use other parts of their houses, she wandered off muttering "don't get any big ideas".

Great thread everyone,
I am green with envy! How do you all get away with it?Hope you all got good insurance...
I wonder if this has anything to do with the high level of divorce?
MEMO-must buy a bigger house,oh no that needs money.

My wife and I have just moved to a new house, so I noticed again how much motoring things I have, and how heavy all this paper is (why didn't I ever start collecting stamps?). I wouldn't call it a museum, and as I am a journalist, most of it is being used for reference more or less frequently, too.

[img][/IMG]

My Michelin guides, books on alpine skiing and some scale models.

[img][/IMG]

More scale models, mainly Citroen.

[img][/IMG]

Motorsport books: F1, rally, touring cars, sportscars, biographies, teams, circuits/events.

[img][/IMG]

And in the cellar: a few thousand magazines and programmes, all stored in Ikea cardboard boxes.

Ha ha, how do we get away with it indeed? I suppose I have a hundred or so motorsport books and the odd print in my study and I tend to keep other items in the garage...

I kept my 40th cake in the garage for many years but eventually it self-destructed...

Of course the study also has to accommodate my other passion...
