FORMULA ONE 06 Comes to PLaystation 2
source: http://www.gamespress.com/

More pickup and play than ever, fully loaded with brand new features: Put on your racing gloves and experience action-packed racing fun in FORMULA ONE 06

Set for launch in June 2006, FORMULA ONE 06 is the only official game of the 2006 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPTM and is back exclusively to PlayStation2 and PSP(PlayStationPortable). Loaded with new features and all the official 2006 drivers, cars, teams, circuits and rules, FORMULA ONE 06 is the only way to truly interact with the world's raciest sport!

FORMULA ONE 06 on is all about speed, competition and fast-paced action. If you're a novice, switch on the improved driver and racing aids to race for fun; or turn them off for a full length GRAND PRIX experience if you're a FORMULA ONE professional. FORMULA ONE 06 features the ability to Network Play between PlayStation 2 and PSP . This means players can now compete online across platforms to see who the fastest FORMULA ONE 06 racer is. In other words, if you own the PlayStation 2 version of the game and your friend owns the PSP version, you can still compete on the same circuit!

For the first time, the experienced Studio Liverpool development team has been hard at work on both titles, to ensure the 2006 games remain innovative and fresh. Brand new features include:

Accessibility: Thanks to new racing aids, any gamer can pick-up and play FORMULA ONE 06 and enjoy the exhilaration of driving a FORMULA ONE car. Equally, if you're a confirmed F1 driver, you can scale the gameplay to make it more simulation oriented. Either way, you will have access to a Tips and Learning Centre to constantly improve your racing skills

Online Play: You can now race online in a complete 18-race season! Relive the excitement and the competition of a full championship season. Winning it will make it even more satisfying!

Cross Platform: Race online between all PlayStation platforms!

Realism: Race in this year's championship with all the 2006 drivers, cars, teams, circuits and rules!
Getting even closer to the world's most glamorous sport, both titles give players the real FORMULA ONE experience via new additional features including:

Classic Cars: Unlock and take the wheel of classic FORMULA ONE cars
Extensive Career Mode: Chief Engineer - A new way of playing career mode
Live Action Racing: Pressure system, AI mistakes and collisions, race incidents, new physics

Race Car Evolution: Tune and set up your car without going through complicated menu screens

The PSP version will also take advantage of Infrastructure Mode allowing you to race online, a first for FORMULA ONE on PSP.

So... take a seat, put on your racing gloves and get ready to experience the action-packed racing fun that is FORMULA ONE 06 on PSP and PlayStation 2.

This is FANTASTIC !!!!!
Excellent new features !

Sounds like a great game, but there's one important feature that they still haven't addressed: lack of availability in the United States!
PK
It is so sad that because of this Sony deal there are no new F1 PC games. down.gif

Anybody know how long Sony has the exclusive right?
Kaiser
sweet, I can play on my psp roflmao.gif Nice controls and all that.

This unfortunalty is the Fault of Sony America.

Studio Liverpool Have gone on record as saying they'd love to release it in the states but it all relies on Sony America to allow the game to be sold in their territory.
FormulaOneGamer
Yes, sadly that was a SONY America decision, although I'm pretty sure Sony International probably could have / should have seen to it that North America got the game [as they did in 2001].
Now, SONY has combined all worlwide divisions & development groups, and with the PS3, we'll see "Formula One" in the USA.
Another good sign, is the "cross platform" aspect. My guess is that there will be only 1 version of the game come PS3, and we should all be able to race online together worldwide.

Sony America is really going to miss the boat for F1 '06 on PS2
Mr M0by
US Gamers will at least be able to import UK PSP versions of the game.
FormulaOneGamer
PSP must pale in comparison to PS2 w/ a Wheel. If 2006 sees the "NTSC" option that was in the Demo [review copy??], then US gamers would be better off Importing a UK PS2 smoking.gif

The deal is a five-year one which began in 2003. Formula One Administration is said to get around $70m from it in total! I have interviewed the programmers at Sony who work on this and they're top guys. They know their stuff inside out.

There are some deatils about this in my article if it's of any use:

Great for PS users. But it's a shame, really, that no other fuckin studio can do F1 games... :\
Tomecek
Not to have official formula one game available for PC is a crime.
Iconoclast
I guess NASCAR is more popular in the U.S. than F1.
sweetreid
Will the UK version work on a North American PS2?

so just to clear the fog, there are no real options for all of us owners of North American PS2 right ?! What can we do? buy what exactly ?!? this is so stupid. I bought PS2 only for F1 and for GT. Put a nice Driving Force Pro Steering Wheel and now what !?! Please tell me there is cheet or watever workarround so we can enjoy the latest F1 game. Japanese, Asian version, UK? The one from Mars !? PS3 !?!

I'm realy getting mad at all this nonesense, sorry to all frown.gif

have a nice Monaco GP this week up.gif
Superbar
sprocket! Sounds to me like you'd want to have a 'mod' chip installed in your PS2. If you'r handy with electronics you may even do it yourself. These mod-chips circumvent the protection features. The legal use is for imported games, but many use it to be able to play illegal copies. I can't tell you where to turn or recommend anything, but you should be able to find plenty of information after a search on google. Important note: You need to have a display that can handle PAL if you want to play games imported from Europe (Japanese games are in NTSC).
Arrows4Ever
If you're not gonna release it in North America, why the kfuc do they bother showing it at E3 which is being held in the US???

I know it's an International Show but...
(Was a game ever previewed at E3 but only released in Japan? It's a real question here! I'm no specialist...)

Just pisses me off even more...(as a North American Gamer!!!)

Don't kfuc'n tease me right in my face if you're not giving me the candy later SONY!!! mad.gif mad.gif

That just pushes me more and more towards that 360...

where did you see this
FormulaOneGamer
Phil Harrison of SONY said it:

A final, rather revealing question was asked to the effect of whether the PS3 would have regional lockouts. Harrison had mentioned that the console would support multiple display formats, and so we pressed him on whether all formats, from HD, to traditional displays, to PAL, SECAM and NTSC, would be supported out of box.

Harrison responded in a rather interesting way – “The things that make a console region free are different from what makes games region free.” Voltage differences, plug styles and that sort of thing mean that there will naturally be different SKUs for different regions. But at the same time, software will be region free . It’s possible for developers to enforce whatever encoding and format limitations they want. “If they want to divide it, that’s their choice. But the concept is that content is region free.”

FOG,
Thanks
Arrows4Ever
I'm not putting YOUR word in doubt FOG but I'll believe it when I see it... :\

It's Sony's word I'm finding hard to swallow...

(For example: I remember when Gran Turismo 4 was gonna be online.)

To read it another way. Actually Sony haven't officially decided this one way or the other.
FormulaOneGamer
They've decided to sell it in the USA, so it really is a mute point at the moment up.gif as the USA players will be able to race online with us just the same clap.gif
Ricardo F1
Indeed ; though I think that might be down to having a wee bit of shortage of launch titles rather than an ongoing committment to F1 racing in the US. smoking.gif

Interestingly it says June 2006.. I assume that is for PS2. If they bring it to the US I can find it in Mexico...otherwise it would be the same as the 2005 edition.. that's nada, zero, none.

What we need is for studio to make a proper racing game with open wheel racers that you can do anything in, online with loads of capability very user friendly etc. something that takes off, using Champcars or something. We can do all the modding with the tracks and cars later on. Just get a new game out there for us all to buy and leave the rest to us.
polendo
Oh well. Will require PS3 first then since my PS2 can only handle NTSC.
Thanks for the info,
kamix
I even own a ps2 but only have a pc wheel, soo .. won't be buying any F1 games untill 2010 it sounds like. frown.gif

solution for anyone trying to play this on their american ps2 (i only know how to play on a slim ps2);

1. order a "swap magic 3" for the slim version ps2.
2. order the game.
3. follow the instructions on the swapmagic3.com website. place the bits in the specific places.

NOTE: you do not have to break the warranty or open your ps2 for this to work.

4. once you've placed the bits, insert the swap magic 3 dvd.
5. swap in the F105 disc, switch to PAL and go to "load game".

game should play. within the game, adjust the screen position if necessary. i had to adjust my screen position a lot because it was so far down and to the right.

DETAIL UPDATE:

it's really simple to mod your slim ps2 to play imports without ever opening your slim ps2.

1. locate the 3 spots in which to place the bits. with the "reset/power" button facing you, looking into the tray; (1) top left (near hinge holding lid), (2) right of lense (stopper that touches the disc) (3) and bottom right (right next to the "reset button".

2. place the longer piece in location (1) at the hinge. tape it down if you need. this will make your ps2 think the lid is closed at all times.

3. pull the stopper (2) back (so it's no longer able to touch the disc) and place a piece next to it. tape it if need be. you could actually just tape the stopper back. works fine for me.

4. place the last bit into the hole (3) at the bottom right. tape the bit so it doesnt pop out.

5. place swap disc into ps2 and press reset. screen loads up, place your import (F105/06) into the ps2 and press "load program". your game should start.

I have postponed my purchase of a PS to wait for the PS3. Only reason - F106! Come November soon smile.gif

PS2 Info:

Looks like the car models are far better this year, as well as better cockpit view sitting position

dean.harmer
Its about time they added a proper cockpit for this game. Textures still look a bit dodgy for a new game.

Er, blimey. Having looked at those videos, I guess the one word that sums up my feelings towards Formula One 06 would be 'underwhelmed'.

I know the PS2 is an aging bit of kit now, but still.
