Great pics all the same!!
Thanks for pointing that out. Error corrected!!
Now I'll have to check if I have a shot of #14 Beltoise on track that I missed.

Power was supplied by a 354ci Chrysler Hemi, with a front-mounted GMC blower connected by a Potvin drive. This fed back through a Schaeffer clutch to a '39 Ford gearbox. Although not clear in the photos the car featured front disc brakes as these were required by the RAC regulations.
Quite what the BOC thought of it one can only wonder
Barry Boor, the Vanwall pic was taken at Goodwood, year was probably 1960, nobody in the family can remember!

Pesch was driving the Porsche 917 in 1972 because he had badly damaged his McLaren M8E in the startline accident with the Muller Ferrari the previous weekend at the Nurburgring Interserie race.
Just to confuse matters this also the car that Jurgen Barth would race in 1973 in GELO colours

.Hello murph,
Do you probably have a photo of Ian Ashley's Brabham from 1974? He drove it only during practice for the Canadian and the US Grand Prix, so you could have seen it.
I know a few guys who would be happy to get a photo of this car
Steffen, you can see a picture of this car on the following website:

It's quite interesting what first catches people's eyes when they want to identify a car from a picture like the one of the Surtees - the first thing I noticed was not the bodywork, but the wide-based lower wishbone with track road and no lower radius rod - not that common in those days, but (no lower radius rod) typical of all Surtees F1 cars, IIRC! The March 711 had a similar rear suspension arrangement, but this is definitely a Surtees, as you pointed out and evidenced by the airbox, side pods, roll hoop etc.

I notice that the TS14 in your photo does have a lower rear radius rod - which makes an even stronger case for TS9B. My contention that all Surtees F1 cars had no lower rear radius rod was thus wrong
Is the TS14 picture Big John's car at it's debut at Monza in 1972? I never noticed before that the TS14 ever carried the old style TS9B airbox, but apparently it did...could you post the complete TS14 picture or provide a link?

Admittedly, these snaps probably belong in a Chevron B41 thread, but I bring them here as they are to be seen in a more general context, namley a (TGP, IIRC) 'event' at Jyllandsringen (Denmark) in June 1997. Unfortunately only a handful of cars showed up for this event (the B41, Terry Sayles' TS20, a March 821, an N183 Theodore-Ensign and a rather newer Leyton House F3000). Rather more was promised, including a BT49 and an unspecified Ligier.
Fpr whatever reason, Danish real estate agent and Super Saloon driver Hans Vestergaard got to drive the B41 in the F1 'race' (of 10 to 20 laps, IIRC) - and promptly won it. To the best of my knowledge, that would make him the first (and so far only) Dane to win an F1 race - and also the only time (so far) that the B41 won a race...
There's nothing sophisticated about the B41 - bigger running gear and tanks, deformable structures and a DFV - a bit like a scaled up B38, really.

I'm very pleased you found the pictures of interest - I'll scan and post what I've got.
I think you're probably correct about the March being an 811 rather than an 812, and you're probably correct about your other points, too - I don't have any written records concerning the event, only the snapshots and off-the-top-of-my-head recollections. You may be able to surmise some more about the identities of the other cars when I post the remaining pics.
BTW: Somehow, I have a feeling that the F1 event eventually didn't count for any championship...

Glad you liked the snapshots. If memory serves, the March was driven (and owned, I think) by a German gentleman - or at least he had a German name. I also seem to remember that he finished second behind Vestergaard. Enjoying the sounds of F1 again for the first time since the RoC of 1983(albeit 'only' a few DFVs) and the sight of particularly the TS20 and the B41 was what caught my attention more than names and performances. Perhaps I should get Morten Alstrup to find out more?

The shot of Depailler is, like the one of Evans, also from 1975 (Tyrrell 007), and the one of Fittipaldi is 1979. Hunt's win in the Grand Prix of Europe (aka the Dutch GP) was 1976 (the 1975 GP of Europe was in Austria).

And was there ever a family of cars that looked as functional as Surtees' - especially the neat little TS10? They weren't 'arf bad in 72 - and the Edenbridge works could surely have repeated the F2 championship success in 73, if March hadn't landed that pesky works BMW deal, methinks. Imagine what a Surtees-works BMW deal instead might have meant for Team Surtees' longevity - assuming that Big John and the Bavarians could have seen eye-to-eye, that is...

ETA: Staff, that nosecone looks like a contemporary F1 Surtees nose!
#1234
Posted 15 October 2005 - 12:33
I never realized before that The Rat's 1972 Monza nose cowling was actually the Surtees-esque one shown in the Österreichring shot with 'eyelid' covers (with the Good Year decals) over the 'nostrils' - the basic air intake apertures were quite large.

What a lovely birthday present! Great shots!
Bring back F5000 and 2L F2 - and never mind GP2, A1GP and the other bland F3000 derivatives. Even though there were a lot of more or less identical Lola chassis in F5000, there was nevertheless chassis variety, and the different teams did manage to make their T330/T332 models look somehow different from each other with modified air intakes, wings and whatnot. I also like the green Surtees livery. Were there ever as spectacular single seaters outside F1 and USAC as the 1970s F5000s? [/rhetorical question]
Stuart,
It was a pleasure to meet you at AI - even though things were a bit hectic!
'Smiling' Tom Belsø was a hero to my generation of then adolescent racing enthusisasts - lovely shots! Any chance of me getting hold of some hi-res scans of the photos you posted here? I particularly like the early 73 Snetterton shot, which shows the car and 208 Radio Luxembourg/Shell Sport livery and T332 'machoness' to good advantage.

Some time ago, there was an old documentary about 'Smiling' Tom's relatively low-budget F5000 campaign on Danish TV. Sadly, my VCR was defective so I didn't get it recorded. Anyway, it was centered around a race at Zandvoort, won by Ian Ashley in a T400, IIRC. I wondered why Tom, and others, ocassionaly drove without an airbox in the mid seventies.

Belsø was a very popular driver in Denmark - sadly I never got to see him race 'live' - by the time I'd picked up an interest in racing, he'd moved to the UK.

Merci encore!
...and please excuse my French - I'm Danish
Edited to correct spelling - not that it makes much difference...

Bruno's and my exchange was regarding the shot of Lauda's "stripped" car in the Monaco - Bruno inadvertently dated it to 1975, I pointed out the error as evidenced by the presence of the front roll-hoop - Bruno concurred and corrected the caption to read 1976 insetad of 1976.
And I agree - Bruno's shots really catch the ambience - it's like being there...
