but who is the chap on the right?

I may be well wide of the mark, as I don't recall seeing pictures of him in his later years, but isn't that John Cooper?

it certainly doesn't look like John Cooper to me !!! confused.gif

Nor me, but I could be proved wrong.

My first thought, too, was John Cooper, but on reflection I'll say Alan Brown

Im sure we can rule out John Cooper. I know there is some resemblance but I don't think his hair was ever that white.

These are the views we all got as race enthusiasts who paid their £5 - or wahtever it was - to access the paddock at any GP or F1 race of the '70s. Young followers of today's F1 circus just wouldn't believe it, would they? Do folk just not know when they are being ripped off?

P.S. £5 in 1975 would be worth about £27 in today's money, according to the retail price index. Still pretty good value I would suggest.

It was similar this side of the pond. I drove the 650 miles to Mosport from my home each fall to see the Canadian GP. General admission was in the range of Can$10-15. For another five or ten one could purchase a paddock pass which got us into the big long garage where all the teams were housed. One whole side was partitioned off for us punters. We could hang over the rail and practically touch the cars. Took a lot of photos, all of which are a bit underexposed because I had a very cheap flash unit. (before a decent strobe unit was available to my price range and using rather pedestrian 100ASA film). Somehow or other my buddy and I got into the pits (no pass, just the old wait until the guard's back is turned) and were actually in the pit lane. Imagine that today! We were leaning up against one pit box, watching the action around us when Hans Stuck casually leaned up against the rail right next to us. Once we got over our initial shock, Hans engaged us in a short conversation. Quite a memory! Chapman, Mario, Ronnie, Wattie, and others just walked within an arms length of us. At the time we did not think this to be too extraordinary, but with all the restrictions now we see it as being very special indeed!

Moving away from Brands for a moment.

Where and when? The US perhaps! I am sure you can recognise them all without my prompting.

Most of your previous batch were taken at Silverstone (in 1973) Teddy! wink.gif

These latest ones all look like Watkins Glen, 1973 to me. Great pics; especially of poor Cevert...

Ickx, there driving for Williams, but still with a Ferrari patch on his overalls! lol.gif

I think he was doing some consultancy work, maybe on the Iso Marlboro? In fact, he may have mentioned it in a certain interview........

Gary?..........

Good grief! I used to get around in those days. Some more but no comments on where or when as you gentlemen seem to know where I have been better than I do.:\ Hopefully no repeats of previous postings here:-

They look like the British GP meeting at Silverstone in '73 to me, except the one of Denny, Brands.
The Jody McLaren no. 30 which started it all...Looks like Mo Nunn in that McLaren paddock shot too.

Agreed, except the Beltoise pic is maybe - just a gut-feeling - 1969. There's something un-1973 about it to me, but I can't put my finger on it! And the Stuck pic is Brands, during the '74 GP.

Definitely not 1969. I lost all my 60's photos long ago which is a great shame because although the quality was probably not too good, there were many close-ups of the great cars and drivers of those times.

I was particularly sorry to lose my earliest pictures of Jim Clark taken at the Aintree 200 in 1963 (I think) when he took over Trevor Taylor's car and drove through the field as if they were standing still. Many people today seem to think only Schumacher has ever done anything like that.

Perhaps the great thing about these recent paddock pictures is the sheer informality of it all. I don't mean the way in which punters could stroll around the place, but the way that the guys worked on the cars - everything looked a bit haphazard and disorganised, bits of bodywork propped against someone else's transporter, tyres stacked everywhere... presentation didn't count for much in those days, but it didn't detract from the serious work of preparing cars for a race. You could sense that urgent business was being carried out, and I guess you don't get that in today's laboratory-like conditions.
Andrew Kitson
The paddock shots are very much like a grass roots club meeting today...but without the glamour! Except that a few wealthy members do attend with massive motorhomes even at the smallest meetings these days ( including karting!) but in general it is a small van transporter or car and trailer.

It was really wonderful, never to return, just a rope seperating the masses from our Grand Prix heroes and thanks for sharing pictures everyone to remind us of happy days and how brilliant it all was before the big money and Bernie's restrictions arrived.

The "Bennepaldi" was mentioned in the "Photos from the track" thread, with reference to Kim Mather's Atlantic Chevron. Here it is - don't think its nosecone was used on the Chevron.

...and the only photo I ever took of John Travis' beautifully presented March 722P from the same Libre race - who were Riva and Mariani?
Allen Brown
Alan, which libre race would this be? Could you pin down a date?

Looks like some sort of Italian power company.. if it's the same one. Riva and Mariani (from Google).

Alan, any idea of the date for this FL race at Oulton?
Rob

Edit : Allen with the same question while I was posting lol.gif
Mallory Dan
OTOH Riva & Mariani weren't they glass/double glazing or similar?

I suspect the pics were from 1981, that year Val M drove the Bennepaldi in the few Libre races held. The previous year it had been a 'real' Fittipaldi, the next year, '82, he had the Fittipaldi F8 for the "Re-vitalised" British F1 series. Travis had that car in 1981, moving to the ex-Kim 792 in 1982.

I think thats Colin Bennett standing next to the car on the grid, and is that the Malkie B45 behind it you can just see. I presume the meeting is the same one Alan pictured earlier on, ie the mid-Oct Oulton one that had the last FAt race, also a Libre one too.

Being a bit of a sad font anorak, I feel I should point out that the riva & mariani logo is predominately Othmar Motter's Motter Tektura designed in 1975.

It was also used for one of Apple's early logos

The ampersand looks like Futura Extra Bold to me.

Bye wave.gif

I'm pleased to see from Riva and Mariani's website (as highlighted by Rob Ryder) that they still use the very same logo 25 years later, unlike well-known British companies who are so insecure that they employ agencies like Wolff Olins to "redesign" their logos , with the result that they tinker with tried and tested brand marks and leave them looking much the same, or more insipid, leaving them with bills for hundreds of thousands of pounds. the guy above Emmo, is that Brian Redman? Reminds me a lot of David Hobbs, hold on, must go and get my specs...... wave.gif
Alan Cox
Definitely David Hobbs, sterling. You can put the specs back in the biscuit tin!
Jerry Entin
The first picture is Brian Redman with his helmet on . Hobbs is the one having a bad hair day. Redman is in a Formula 5000 Lola in the first picture. Hobbs is right above Emmo. Have another Heineken. Get me and Alan one also. Better get one for Stuart too.

David Hobbs on a pretty good hair day.

No wonder I cannot remember what I came upstairs for.......I had completely forgotten that Redman drove for BRM, what events please, refresh my parts that the Heineken cannot!

In response to Allen and Rob, the libre race at Oulton was on the 9th May 1981. It was a round of the Caledon Coal Northern Formula Libre series. Caledon Coal sponsored David Duffield's Ralt RT4 in the series.

In the first round of the series on the 28th March, I note that there was a March 772P entered for George McMillen, from North Berwick, entered by Bass Rock Garage. Does anyone rember him? Was the car the same one later raced by John Travis, although it had a 1998cc engine when entered by McMillen?

P.S. I think you might need those specs after all, sterling! Redman is sitting in his F5000 Lola.
