It was a bit more laid back in those days cool.gif

Great pictures Alan, thanks for posting!

A few, but the quality isn't good as I'm scanning from 6x4in prints in an old photo album of mine.

Chris Amon's own F1 effort. I think this may have been it's first race.

Could that be the somewhat mysterious Gordon Fowell at the back, wearing spectacles?

Cool shot... and if I didn't think I knew better, I'd swear that was Gilles Villeneuve in that image...
elansprint72
Can you imagine how today's "mechanics" would cope in such a cramped situation? I recall a Ferrari-team fiasco at Oulton where some vital components had gone missing and the mechanics asked all passers-by to get on their hands and knees to find three tiny items in the long grass, gravel and cigarette butts. We found them.
E1pix
No kidding! And what a great memory for you, love it. up.gif

Great pictures!

It's interesting seeing that early '70s Ford Econoline Van in the background. Does anybody know if those sold through regular sales channels in the UK in the 1970's, or would the team have had to import that privately? Nowadays, if a model isn't type-approved, it would be a bureaucratic nightmare! I wonder how readily parts would have been available in the UK.

There were a few dealers who imported US vehicles at the time. Bauer & Millett in Manchester certainly did and I guess they arranged for spares. Quite a few were sold in Europe where left hand drive was less of a problem. When I worked in Germany in the early 80's the boss of the company tralled between his various offices in similar sort of vehicle which was beautifully fitted out in side. We nicknamed it the "Pimp Mobile" smile.gif

I used an Econoline to pull a double stack trailer with Buzz and Grob's Eldens back in the day. Purchased off a US airbase. A lot of cars were imported by the servicemen but not taken back Stateside. That 6 or V8 was a little more power than the trusty Transit back then!!

McLaren had a couple of them that they imported themselves and re-registered. One was used as a van (Yardley colours), the other was used for the mechanics transportation (as seen in the pic) to drive to the races. I still have the original California license plate from one of them.

That was the year that one car had Marlboro sponsorship and the other Yardley. Two vans, two colour schemes. Like the cars.

Unfortunately not; my Pict-Ed in those days was only prepared to pay for two rolls per meeting and I was too poor to go much further, unfortunately.

Here is something else, from the happy-snappy digital world. Le Mans Classic 2008.

As it turns out these two are "old friends".

What on earth is the front vehicle? A Ferrari Panel Van?

Bread van I believe they called it.

As dbltop said, it's the unique Ferrari 'breadvan'. It has its own thread, and although sadly a few of the photos are no longer available, there are still enough there to show what it looks like:

TNFer Marc Sonnery has written the definitive biography of the car, with Keith Bluemel, called "Rebel. Rebel". All of those survivors connected with the car who he could trace provided Marc with his source material, including an interview with Count Volpi, whose idea it was when he couldn't get hold of a GTO. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rebel-Breadvan-Rec...d/dp/0981727077

F1 Garage Monaco 1972 by ericok, on Flickr
1972 Monaco garage was actually in a car park. F1 cars made a left turn out of the garage onto a public road and a short distance to the track.
Barry Boor
Is that the same garage that the F.3 boys were in in 2010?

It doesn't look quite the same to me, Barry. I don't recall that dividing wall.
Barry Boor
I was trying to think of another garage where you would need to turn left to get to the track.

Is that a Lola T292-T296 era car in the background of the top shot? One of Lola's most beautiful cars ever, IMHO. love.gif

Hello,

Send by a member from another forum i'am totally new here and directly with a good question. (i hope i'm here also at the right place here?)

I'm searching for photo's from the Le Mans 1971 and then specific from the three Martini International Racing Team Porsche's (Numbers #21, #22 and #23) in the paddock, so with the truck(s), car(s), people, ect. arround it, i hope that somebody has some old picture from it.
I already did a search on the net, but not all pictures wil pop-up because sometimes men will name there pictures very different then "Le Mans 1971" or "Martini 1971" or something like that, so thats why i put down this question.
I want to make a diorama from the cars and with the few picture's i have i already noticed that the Mercedes transporter i have isn't the good one (or maybe it is, but is't standing beside the other one??), so that's why i'm hoping somebody can profide me more or better pictures.

Kind regards.
E1pix
I do have nice shots of one of those... but not in Langheck configuration (assuming you want that and all three ran that way?)...

But, they were taken in vintage trim in 2002.

Never mind... wink.gif But Welcome to TNF!

Since most of the pics in my people set were taken in the pits or paddock I reckon that set will fit here.....

It was a few years ago now and I'm not actually sure. Think so – didn't hear of any injuries. Yes, it's Silverstone, over by the scrutineering bay.

I don't remember a heavy accident to that model Cooper at Silverstone (but then I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning, either)
Alan Cox
Didn't Peter Hannen have an accident with his Cooper at Silverstone on the last lap of a VSCC race some years ago? However, I didn't recall it being quite as badly damaged as these photos suggest.
(Apologies to Peter if I malign him)
