Do I bother asking if this could make it to the 360? Or are we talking exclusive license to Sony again???(who by the way didn't f%&#ing bother releasing an F1 title in Canada for about 5 years while the whole of Europe has been eating a new game every year...)

Thought so...
Just got my own answer...

Formula One 06
Publisher: SCEE
Developer: Liverpool Studios
Platform: PS3, PS2, PSP

Take a good look Americans, as this
is the closest most of us will get
to Formula One 06.

What We Know:
First of all, we know that the odds of this one coming stateside are about as likely as Christijan Albers winning the F1 2006 world championship. Okay, enough obscure F1 jokes, let's get to the real thing. The E3 demo of Formula One 06 was certainly one of the better-looking PlayStation 3 racing games on the show floor; outshining the Gran Turismo 4-assets of GT HD by a pretty wide margin. Though the game only featured the Monza circuit, we were impressed with the multiple camera views, the gorgeous shading and lighting effects (especially when zipping under the trees after the Lesmo curve), the 22-player online support, and the pinpoint controls, which all left us excited for more.

What We Don't Know:
Who we have to pay off to get this game released in the States. Of course, thanks to the PS3 going region-free with games, we'll be perfectly happy to import this one.

Extra Lap:The PSP wing-mirror feature--which will let you use your PSP as a rearview mirror in the game--was pretty cool feature for F1 06, but also pretty specific. We're curious to see how this feature will fit into other PS3/PSP games
Ivan
A4F,
Have you not read the other thread....
If the PS3 will let you play all PS games including the European releases then you can have any game you want...

FOG,
It'll be the only reason for me to get the PS3 in the first place!!!
I've been asking why there hasn't been region free consoles for years...considering computer games are.

Yes I have...

Have you not read my question?
"Do I bother asking if this could make it to the 360?"

I know about the international factor for the PS3 but the way things are going, SONY are really shooting themselves in the foot and I don't even consider purchasing one.

Reasons:
1- The console is going to be quite expensive
2- Delayed release until spring '07 in Japan(doesn't affect me but production is being rushed right now and missing parts have been an issue in production chain)
3- Only 400 000 units in North America on release in November
4- Some software titles rumored to be of higher price range than before. Between $70 and $100!!!???!!!
Ivan
A4E,
I stand corrected...sort of wink.gif

I really didn't answer the first post just the second, there you said this is as close as we can expect to get here in Amercia, well no really. You don't mention the X-Box in the second post. But I do understand you now.

Aren't computer games region encoded, for similar reasons to Playstation games and DVDs? IE, PAL versus NTSC? Or am I, as usual, just confused?

FormulaOneGamer
PS3 will play both NTSC & PAL
[as long as the dev puts NTSC into a game, it'll play worldwide]

No. From Gamespot:

PC (region-free) : The PC, like the handhelds, is region-free, which means you can import games from anywhere and install them on any PC. You might find language problems to be prohibitive, but since Japan isn't known for having a wealth of exclusive PC games, American gamers will probably do most of their PC importing from Europe.

I REALLY hope we see working mirrors come TGS !!

WOW.
Thanks !

Now, if we can see these from cockpit view, it'd be perfect !: clap.gif

In checking out that newest GamePlay video, I looked @ the timing sector colors, and it got me thinking about how the PS2 version has it wrong. On PS2 the timing goes 'sector by sector', so seeing green is S2 doesn't mean you are going fastest to that point, it only means that your current lap's 'S2 Time' was better than your 'S2' time during the previous lap -- pretty useless.
then I thought about what else should / could be changed / added from PS2 [along with some things that should stay 'as is' !] tongue.gif

1. online mode: qualy / full race distances {with damage & setups / pit stops}
2. AI cars need to be faster off the grid at race start [we make up too many places on lap 1]
3. AI cars need to no longer bang into you from behind while being too aggresive.
4. Better AI difficulty scaling, something like percentage slider from 80 - 100 % [don't need to make "Hard" any harder, just give us more choices below that like 82,84,86 through 94,96,98,100]
5. drive through penalties, instead of rev limit penalty [or option to select one or the other]
6. working cockpit view mirrors
7. correct "sector" graphics [colors should reflect TOTAL LAP Time pace, not 'sector by sector' compared to your last lap -- it should be just like real F1]
8. drive the pitlane ourselves [reversing / driving the wrong way = car goes back to garage]
9. option to have pit lane speed limiter feature [failure to engage limiter in time = penalty]
10. revert to the old TC & ABS adjustments:
< > means lower or higher TC, while V ^ means lower or higher ABS [you could then adjust without actually needing to look at the screen!!]
11. better / more Marshal flag waving [very rarely see flags in PS2, and 'Oil' flag always comes out after you've sped past / over the oil slick.]
12. post race "best lap times / best sector time" chart
13. ability to name our car setups ourselves & save several per track
14. keep the interactive pitstop routine [just add 'confirm / change fuel level' option like previous version of the series [we should be able to 'short fill' just like the announcers are describing for the other drivers]
15. bring back the "Eye Toy" option
16. bring back the "Helmet Visor" Color strip at the top of the cockpit view
[not 'tear offs', unless done correctly = not tearing off a visor mid-turn]
17. i'd prefer the 'centered RPM lights' not the 'Round Dial on the right' [or give us the option]
18. be specific on Brake Bias [65:35= 65 REAR:35 FRONT or does it mean 65 Front:35 Rear??]
19. Make sure we cannot change fuel levels if we save a profile "after Q3, but before Race session"
20. let us "save" a race without "quitting"

keep the handling like PS2 [heavy, but responsive]
keep the 'motion blur'
keep the 'engine vibration'
keep the 'camera shake' 'zoom' features
keep the lap counter at the top / middle

I'm interested in hearing everyone's suggestions, but please keep them to ideas that can actually be implemented [not 'press conferences after the race' or 'cigarette adverts' stoned.gif ]
Physicist
Definately a looker, but I'm wondering if the physics will be on par with the eye candy...

aside from my list above, I'm still completely in the dark about FFB Steering Wheels !!
F1 on Ps2 had GREAT FFB w/ a Logi DFPro Wheel, but what about PS3 ?? confused.gif
Mr M0by
I hope this plays at least half as good as it looks. Can't wait. clap.gif

Looks good so far:

September 22, 2006 - A game of seemingly one million names, with the current working title at TGS 2006 going by Formula One Championship Edition, the F1 simulator promises to bring extremely technical racing to the PlayStation 3. While we'd gotten a quick go with the game at this year's E3, its presence at TGS seems much more telling of what the final game should hold for Formula One fans. While it hasn't been officially announced for release in the US yet, making only European gamers the only official recipients of the title thus far, its constant and large presence at every PS3 showing thus far hopefully indicates that an announcement isn't too far off.

While we thought the game was a little too arcadey at E3, things seemed a fair bit better here in Tokyo. While the ultra-quick acceleration and stop-on-a-dime brakes are still present, the cars kick and squeal within those performance apexes more realistically, giving the game a bit of a challenge and play with the wheel.

When we sat down to play the demo, behind the wheel of a Ferrari at Suzuka no less, we opted to take our laps with a full downpour of rain upon us. This obviously made the game quite a bit more difficult, though as all of the given demos were on the easy setting we didn't have too hard of a time. Still, running a wheel or two off the side of a track and then yanking the wheel to either side ended in very bad things.

The cool thing about racing in the rain are the effects you'll see which not only look cool but tie into the gameplay as well. Every car kicks up a massive amount of rain as they speed along, creating a roostertail of water that completely envelops your vision. And by completely, we mean that if you're back in the pack, the only thing you'll be able to make out ahead of you are the brake lights of the cars in front of you. It's extremely challenging but very cool nonetheless. On your windshield you'll see bits of rain either roll down the window or fly off to the sides at high speed. Many other games have done this so it's not anything new per se, but some pretty nice shaders are used here that make for a nice visual effect.

As for the other racers, they're a bit of a pushover at this point, but that may be in large part to the game being on the easy setting. Giving them a tap will have them running for safety, literally getting out of your way so that you can pass them. They're quite capable drivers, able to overcome spins and such with relative ease, but they were far too timid in our demo. Again, this could very well be because of the difficulty.

Formula One Championship Edition (or whatever it'll wind up being called in the end) looks like it could be a pretty nice racer if things shape up a bit. We're fairly confident that our issues today were solely related to the game's difficulty setting, so if the other racers start putting up a fight then we should have a nice experience on our hands. It remains to be seen just how deep the career mode goes, which also piques our interest, but we're certainly anxious to find out.

I wonder if this will come out for Japan / US PS3 launch [window] and will it have NTSC / English support ?????
FormulaOneGamer
The Japanese version [if there IS a 'specific' version for Japan] comes out soon [Dec ??]
I wonder if it will have an English option ???

I just cant bring myself to believe Sony will do anything other than continue to pollute the franchise.. Most people in the industry are just waiting for the license to expire.

Must be pretty sucky for the studio that makes the game that the game will be a launch game but... the european launch of the ps3 has been pushed back to march (or even later!)

I guess the european market is by far the biggest for the game.
Spyker MF1
Doesnt look nearly as good as Geoff Crammonds GP4 with the 2006 mod AND ITS A 5 YEAR OLD GAME.Pull your finger out sony

I think he simply means you cannot compare apples and oranges.
He feels these 2 games are 2 completely different things so they should NOT be compared...
Why?
Ask him... I cannot say.(Don't know GP4.)

What Arrows said.
Geoff's game is for computers and the PS3 isn't a computer. But the game only consoles are getting better.

PC's are also getting better and at a faster rate than consoles, and the PS3 now has a generation old GPU's in it now as well. I get your point I'm not trying to flame or anything I was mearly pointing out in my first post how little effort Sony are putting into the game compared to what they could
MS7XWDC
actually, EA are putting ZERO effort into this game, especially since Sony makes it lol.gif

here is a movie from the Demo

remember, it's really hard to drive, as I'm using 2 buttons on the wheel for gas / brake [auto shift] and steering with the actual wheel eek.gif

I wish we could see the Ferrari mirrors frown.gif frown.gif

that's pretty sweet James Allen and Martin Brundle as the commentators un the game
Jodum5

Nice video. I wonder if you can make changes to Revs, TC, engine mapping and brake bias in game. Can you?
MS7XWDC
BBias & TC on the fly, yes. Engine 'mapping' / Revs, I'd doubt it, but the demo doesn't permit you to do any 'setup' changes besides TC / BBias.
Arrows4Ever

Yes, but the comments are still pretty "blocky"(as with all racing games).
I say this as I compare how in-game comments have progressed over the last few years in other sport games like baseball, hockey or football.
I think the ones we heard(and hear today) in F1 games are definitely last in the field.
Ivan
MS7,
How did you spin? That was fun to watch.
MS7XWDC
I had to use my "wheel" as a "handheld" controller. In other words, the DEMO [I hope not the Full Game] doesn't recognise my Logi DFPro wheel, so [although I could 'steer' with the wheel] I needed to press the buttons on the wheel for accel / brake. At the end of the long S/Finish strait, I slammed on the brakes 'pressed the button VERY hard' ... and I think locked up the brakes [or maybe my Brake Bias was not great for that action]

This actually bodes well for mor realistic pfysics.

Questions:
I. will we be able to see Ferrari mirrors in c0ckpit view ?
2. will the full version suppoert wheels
3. will it have FFB
