Hi Keith and welcome to the site. It is the same guy, who, I have to say, I don't think I had ever heard of until I saw a picture of him a few years ago.

Be good to see your pics.

This is a nice set of pictures showing a dramatic crash at the Ulster GP at Dundrod.

Brilliant Joe....... things just got worse and worse. Hope they all escaped relatively unscathed. The only guy I can identify for certain is 11, Tom Phillis.

Yes they did all escape relatively unscathed and only one rider went to hospital. The photos are taken at Leathamstown bride. The crash started when Alan Trow scraped the stone wall. W Prowting was going for the bridge at speed and throttled back when he saw Trow. The two bikes touched and both riders came off. Chris Anderson then could not avoid Prowting and his bike (in the middle of the road) and bounced over him. B Carizon (of Sweeden)swerved to the right, before wobbling and then running into Chris Anderson. Both riders crashed and then dived into the hedge to avoid the other bikes.

Is the incident something you have researched in connection with Bob Mac/Joe Potts ? Is it '60/61? Who finished where ? The pic of Alan Trow is from Brands 1960. He had disappeared from racing when I got into it as a kid, although his names appears all the time in late 50's accounts of daring do...something is telling me he was killed?

No the crash is not related to Potts et al. It is from 1960 I think. Alan Trow was a great rider. He rode for the Works Norton team and then later Reg Dearden. He stopped racing (bikes) in 1960. He was not killed racing but died a few years later from illness.

Thanks Maridadi. John Surtees. Don´t know where or when, but the MV mechanic is familiar. Sorry, can´t name him, but I´m sure Russ will know his name.

How about you Dennis, did you ever go there? I'm sure I've seen a picture of Surtees at the Mere Hairpin......and that he had a memorable race with Duke sometime in the fifties.

What a great pic Peter. I was a great fan of Martin´s. I really rated him. I thought his results in GB were a bit disappointing for whatever reason. What are your thoughts?

Hi Leo, welcome to the site. I like your G50 - do you have more info on its history ? And can you run it there unsilenced ?

Hi Leo wave.gif ,

Welcome indeed - great to see your Kirby Metisse. A priceless bit of racing history there! I don't think many survived unmolested like that. I'm sure I recall a relative of Lewis Young posting a request for information/pictures about Lewis on this forum a while back (or on the sister forum '69 - '90?).

Hi Rhodie - although I was only a lad at the time, I seem to remember Martin Watson being very successful when he came over here in the sixties. Photos of him, especially on the Bultacos (on which he had a lot of wins I think), appeared regularly in the motorcycling comics of the day and also in race programmes. I remember he looked very big astride the little Bultacos! Anyone else got views?

Yes guys i've looked back through some old progs, and the first listing I can find is the R of the S on the 9th Oct 1966 riding 125,245 and 252 Bultaco's and interestingly ,499 Norton which I don't recall confused.gif with good top 12 results mostly --of the results I filled in .Martin as we know was entered by Doug Aldridge .

Hi Russel,

I found this bike two years ago. She has been stored since 1972 and used very little but maintaned very well. So bike is exacly same as she was 1972. As a matter a fact she is same at she was 1970. Even the dirt (make up) was original. lol.gif

I think this bike is mix of two metisses. I´m not sure but I know that Lewis had one Kirby and one Rickman. I have proof about that.
First Kirby-bikes were made 1966 to Young, Bill Ivy and Chris Conn (Motor Cycling Feb 12 1966) and first bike had AMC forks and AMC brakes (later Rickmans forks and Locheed brake). Young changed AMC brake to Fontana and Pentti Lehtelä changed fork and brake to Ceriani and Grimeca. Saddle has also been shortened 5 cm. Lehtelä or Young changed engine head and bottom to Seeley maybe 1968 or 1969. Both great riders are gone so there are some things I´m not sure but these things are not important.
Pentti Lehtelä drove very nice with this bike. He got nice GP-points at three GP-race (shame that he didnt had money to travel around. It was a big problem for most of good finnish riders). 1969 Results

Lewis Young was very famous here in Finland. He spend some summers here and drove some winnings with this bike. He helped other drivers and was very friendly. He had also fan club called "Youngs" or let say "Young-ones" mostly young boys and girls. They have even own batch. Lewis was great man.

I want to keep this bike as it has been 1969. She works nice and goes fast. I dont want to keep her at glass closet, I like to drive. I drove Metisse last week end at "Memories at Imatra", month ago "Memories of Hedemora" etc, etc.

Unsilenced = Castration. I avoid that lol.gif
At showrace this castration is not necessary. Audience demands sound.clap.gif

BTW: Métisse is not a mongrel. Métisse is a female who is multicultural, multiracial (french word). Métis = male.

This is nice forum. I have visited often this forum to look fine picturers and I´m surprised about your history knowledge.

Thanks for the information Leo - It's a lovely bike and I would love to hear the sound coming through that unsilenced megaphone.
As a kid I saw Lewis race many times in England: I can see him now dropping down paddock bend on one of Kirby's bike, still tucked in and really stylish........ Do you know how your bike arrived in Finland?
pmbboy
Hi Guys
I see that there have been quite a few comments on Martin Watson since I dropped that photo of him into the forum. I would like to add what I can remember of the time but with it now being 40 years since, facts and figures are not to hand. We as a family have very few photos or papers from the 60 sixties racing scene which for me is a real shame.
Martin arrived in the UK accompanied by John Smith at the start of the 65 season with a pair of Nortons for both sponsored by my Dad Doug. Martin was to race in the UK and John doing the UK and Europe. My Dad purchased two 250 Bultaco,s which arrived in the UK about May for each rider. the results for both were good being heat winners and the occasional top three but always in the hunt at the front which we thought were good. John had two big crashes on the Bulto at Brands at the bottom of Paddock which knocked him about a bit and then another big crash at the fast sweeper at the back of Castle Combe this was late july 65 after this John returned to SA. Martin continued on for the rest of the season and again was mostly in the top six in all classes.
For the 66 season my Dad bought three new Bultacos two 250's and a 125 the order had already been done before John decided not to return to the UK.
Martin was to race a pair of Nortons the best biked being picked from the six my Dad had at the time Martin decided that the pair raced by John the previous year were the ones to use plus now the Bulto's we were on for a full season of racing.
Martin did all the national and international races plus the Manx grand Prix that season using the Nortons but after a time the 350 made way for a 252 Bulto (who beleives is was a 252) agaoin getting heat wins and top six finishes a plenty but no big win came his way.
The biggest prize of the year was winning the newcomers award in the lightweight Manx and finishing 5th which could have so easily been a win as he started with Bob farmer who won but the thirsty Bulto needed fuel were as the Aeromacchi went striaght through and they had kept together all the time prior to the pit stop.
Martin returned to SA at the end of the season and called an end to his racing abroad but contiued to race into the early 80'in SA.

great days for me no wonder I did so bad at school always had a weekend of racing to think about, one just gone and the next one coming.

Peter Aldridge.

You're right it was John Samways that took over from Martin Watson riding for Doug Aldridge. Does anyone know what became of John? I believe he went to live in the US and also raced a bit over there.

Hi David. What a great shot of Martin Watson. Awesome rider who should have done far better than he did in Europe. I was always waiting for his break through, but it never came. Maybe he should have concentrated more on the continental circus instead of the British domestic scene. What do you think?

David, would you or your brother have a picture of the man Ekerold rates as the best ever, Johan Boshoff. I never tired of watching that great man at work, but somehow a thread on this period without a section on him seems like Christmas without snow, if you live in the northern hemisphere that is.lol.gif
I´m sure those who never had the pleasure of watching this wonderful rider would relish a few shots of him. Sadly, I don´t have any.

Hi I am afraid I have no Photos at all I think the best I have are some pictures from old programmes. He was a great champion who could have achieved success world wide if he had had the breaks.
I seem to recall he had a brother Hendrick who also raced anyone remember him at all, i am sure that a young Johan raced with him in the mid sixties if I remember Johan was quite lurid on a 7R must be 1964/5.

Quite right Peter. Hennie was a very talented lad and I seem to recall seeing him on a 350 Ducati on a few occasions. However, I think Hennie was younger than Johan IIRC.
On the subject of Johan, not many people know he actually did a few European 750 races (Imola 200, Paul Ricard and one or two others) in about 1976 I think. He was equiped with a below par TZ700, and as a result, failed to get the results his undoubted ability deserved. I also heard he just wasn´t prepared to live out of the back of a van, which prompted his early return home.
I don´t have any details of his European excursion, but maybe someone on here can enlighten us.
philippe7
You've got the year right, ex-Rhodie, I have picked up the issue of Moto-Journal which covers the 1976 Paul-Ricard 200. Johann Boschoff qualified at the back of the grid ( 45th out of 58 starters....but over a 150 entries ! ) with a time of 2'17''5 , which considering the length of the track ( and of the straight ) is not ridiculous compared to Cecotto's 2'09'' on the factory OW31 , or Ballington and Katayama's 2'12" . He was in the same 2'16"" / 2'17"" bracket as Moineau , Rigal, J.Williams, Grant, Baldé, Chevallier, Haslam, Bourgeois , Pat Evans... to name guys with more comparable machinery.... He finished 15th overall, 3 laps down , out of 31 finishers . So not too bad, considering the circumstances .

By the way, this belongs to the 1969/1990 thread really wink.gif
Henry Snee
As I recall it, Bossie took a few months leave from his job as a mine captain in Boksburg early in '76. He was supposed to do Imola, Ricard and a few others. However, his bike didn't arrive in time for Imola and as Philippe has mentioned, he went sort of OK at Ricard. I think he returned to SA because his leave ran out and because his 750 Yamaha belonged to Charlie Young's (Yamaha SA) and they really wanted him to race at home. He won 7 SA titles, which at the time was a record and sadly passed away after a practice crash at Kyalami in '77.

He was 35 at that time and I think, as Rhodie suggests, probably not as keen as for example "le trio infernal" (Kork, Jon, & Alan) to "rough it" in Europe in order to get ahead probably because he had already achieved so much at home.

David
Henry Snee
By the way Rhodie, you where spot on, the earlier pic was Martin Watson at Hesketh in 1963. I'm afraid I havn't come across any pics of Johan Boshoff.
