Nice shot....Looks like Hugh Anderson out fron and Tony Godfrey ahead of Readie, Rob Fitton left with the light mark on dark crash helmet and extreme right Peter Middleton? Cadwell, '62 ?

Dear me, 10 out of 10 Russ. Well done clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif I didn´t think anyone would get Peter Middleton, as he isn´t as well known as the others. Maybe you could tell us a bit about him?

Once again 10 out of 10. I´m more than impressed clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif .
BTW, what´s the visual difference that distinguishes the long stroke machine from the short stroke?

Hi Rhodie, Maybe did well in the Manx ? Bit of a Cadwell specialist ....don't remember him down south. He was killed around '62 when on his road bike , I think when on an errand to post a letter? (do hope I've not misremembered that last bit)

The earlier long stroke has a very different frame, wet clutch, much smaller brakes. Not noted for their reliability, whereas the later bikes would go on forever.

Not sure where (but have an inkling)...who and what, gents?
Paul Rochdale
No 8 is John Hartle on a Gilera.
ex Rhodie racer
I was going to answer this, but the more I look at the pic, the more confused I´ve become. I´ll only offer John Hartle on the 8 bike. What bike it is though, is a mystery, and it could be in IOM or Dundrod I suppose. No idea of the year.
confused.gif
Oh well, I´ll let the big boys answer this one. :\

Thats what I thought Paul, but it´s a 350. Did he ride a 350 Gilera, or only the 500? Unless of course it´s a practice shot and he´s going out on the 500 with a 350 fairing on.

Found this snippet so it appears he did in fact ride the 350 Gilera

I have just been viewing classicpics' excellent picture gallery (enlarge his picture of the rider flying through the air, then click "other images from this user"). Take a look at picture 21 - Mike Duff appears to be on the same bike as our old friend number 50 below (Fred Stevens). Presumably Tom Arter's G50?

Barry, can't now find the Classicpics site....How do you get there please?

I'm still looking for that Cooper picture......

Hi Russ wave.gif Assembly area IOM 1963 up.gif # 24 don't know confused.gif
knickerbrook
Russ - for classicbikes's pictures, I clicked on the picture he posted on post 1849 (rider flying through the air), then clicked the link "other images from this user". He's got some great pictures there!

That guy on the 7R next to Hartle - is it by any chance Billy McCosh?
Russell Burrows
Yes Barry, Duff's bike does look very similar, oh dear....... As you say, some stunning shots there. Although there's no information about the 7R rider, I'm about a knats cock away from 100% certainty that it's McCosh.

Like Phil I think it's the Island and definitely '63. As some will remember, The 350 Gilera wasn't a runaway success - Didn't they withdraw them before the end of the year. Unlike the 500, I've no recollection of seeing them at short circuit meetings here.
larryd
Definitely Billy McCosh!!

Picture of Fred Stevens on the IoM site. Not much help as he's Norton mounted but it's a nice picture.

'Mooneyes' , Griff Jenkins , Pat Mahoney ,Mallory @1966
Russell Burrows
Hi Phil, fine thanks. Yeah, too easy for you hotshots...although you've forgotten to ID the guy at the rear? Dug this out in my continuing quest to find pics of Cooper with a white Peel fairing and red stripe....I pinched it from a '68 programme which doesn't give the year. I was rekoning it was '67 , the only year JC used those fairings on his Manxes? Also, Pat's on Kirby's Mettise framed 7R.....bit early, maybe not? I wonder if Jenkins has rolled the throttle a little bit and sat up as he got a tad to near Cooper?

Afraid not Russell only qualified for my full international licence that year.In those days it was issued on a points system based on results in finals at national meetings.believe to get points you had to finish in the finals in top 10 and with sometimes up to 90 entries in a race including the likes of Hailwood,Minter, Read and many other riders of that calibra you used to feel it was an achievement to make the final let alone the
top 10.My first TT was 1964 but had a very bad crash in practise end of mountain mile which landed me in hospital for a while.

Note the scaffold poles to "protect" the riders around Devils, Chief Marshall George Morris got some conveyor belt form Thoresby Colliery, we tied it to the poles and stuffed it with straw. If you went over the poles there was a steep drop onto an old rubbish tip.
I think it was sidecar racer Ian McDonald who flew over the top. I remember seeing a cartoon of this at Frank Ingers shop in Mansfield with the caption "Sidecar altitude record holder" Frank was a friend of Ian's and a builder and racer of some great outfits. Mainly triumph twin engined, but he did mate two ariel arrow engines to make a four, but it never ran well. This would be about 1963/4.

It's the thought that counts CP.... What year do you think this is?

Not sure on that Russ , but his fettled 250's were quite quick -- not on par with the Yam's in the open 250 class but ok in the proddy field IIRC -main rider Frank Whiteway ? plus ?? Frank mentioned on the 50 thread recently I think sad.gif

Yes gents - Ahearne and Jolly are correct clap.gif .

Here are some more:-

Russell Burrows
Derek Woodman top ,....don't think I know the other.
larryd
It's either Len Ireland or Dick Creith - I'll go with Dick.
Certainly the other one is Derek Woodman
knickerbrook
Yes Russ clap.gif Derek Woodman.
Yes Larry clap.gif Dick Creith - surprise winner of the 500cc Ulster GP in 1965 (a World Championship round) in which he beat some of the biggest names of the day on the legendary Joe Ryan "fireplace" Norton.
GD66
Worth pointing out that the MVs didn't attend the Ulster that year, but Creith's win ahead of Paddy Driver and Chris Conn in atrocious conditions still opened everyone's eyes wide.....as for the Fireplace Norton, well old Joe must have spent a long time lovingly preparing the insides of the thing, because to describe it as a bit rough would be a masterpiece of understatement.... eek.gif

Was in the 1st Killalane road race (as was Larry I think)against Sam McClements on the Ryan Norton.I won't say racing against him because I was in the 'also ran's ' department.Boy was it a scruffy old bugger.Part of the fairing patched up with the rear long vehicle plate from a semi trailer. And the wheel rim flanges full of grease and crud, BUT DID IT GO!!!
My one worry was that Sam would run me over when he came round to lap me.Thankfully it didn't happen,I managed to stay on the same round.(Bloody miracle). My mate/mechano said he'd never seen seen a Manx go like that dirty old pig.And of course it won, beaten a very hot Rocket 3 ridden by the late Bob Hirst.I wasn't racing Larry either;he was way in front of me.I think the bike was seldom used after Sam's demise.
HW
knickerbrook
Yeah, I read somewhere that Ryan's "fireplace" Norton (presumably there was more than one?) was a something of a dog to look at, but went like stink! Stuff of legends eh? Good to have your first-hand information. If memory serves, John Cooper was also in that race. I bet there were a few Guiness's drunk that night - what an amazing ride that must have been! I remember Joey at Oulton Park once on a similarly tatty Yamsel (red frame I think) and that was bloody quick too!
