Steve B, I think, Russell. Macca soon turned out to be the man to beat on a TZ350 in the Marlboro Series, though; I'd reckon Chas Mortimer may have had something to do with suggesting he further his career in northern climes....

edit: Steve Bayliss is still racing too, he was podium material in the 30-odd strong sidecar field at the Phillip Island Classic a month ago...

I´ve always wondered how much of an impact Rupert would have made had he not been killed. He must have been an exceptional talent to have won a world title in only his 2nd season.
Here is a link to a page that might be of interest to many of you.
Nice to see the Austrians honouring their only road race champion 50 years after winning his world title.

I note from your age Rennmax that you might have been around when the NSU team were winning everything ? If so, did you see Hollaus, Haas, Lomas, et al?

Hi Russ, please take the figures of my profile not too literally, I'm not yet 104 years old roflmao.gif

I'm in my mid-fifiies, so the NSU saga was long finished before I started to watch races.
One of my first impresssions of the Nürnberg Norisring is the event of '66 (Grassetti, Bob Coulter, Scheidegger/Robinson etc. etc)

But I know a lof of these immediate pre/postwar legends of my late pa, who more or less infected me.

Regards

Well, as expectd that didn't last long: Seeley and Auerbacher it is, Hockenheim ('66?). Seeley goes into some detail about this race in the first volume of his book - he finnished third, with George fourth. Wonder what Wally Rawlings was thinking to himself at the time ?

Me too, as a nipper I was subjected to tales of daring do by the likes of Daniel, Duke, Amm etc, and was taken to race meetings from about the age of six. Didn't stand much of a chance really....

Thanks for your comment, Rhodie.
Yes, he was gifted. For instance, in the 250cc races at Bremgarten, held in heavy rain, he lapped everyone with the exceptoin of the runner-up. Lapped riders were H.P. Müller (worldchamp in 55 on his private 250 Sportmax single), Roberto Colombo, Luigi Taveri etc.
How would he have continued ? NSU would have closed their race shop at the end of '54 anyway, works bikes were few and far between with the exception of Mondial and MV. He was on par with Ubbiali, probably better IMHO, so you knows ?
Anyway, the tragedy is that his skull bone was thinner than normal, so he could have been killed by a any strong impact in everyday life.

More serious..

Colin Seeley drove a FCS (Fath Camathias Special) in '64, winning the Dutch TT. I think he purchased it from Camathias when Florian tried it with the Gilera engined outfit. Is it that FCS in your '66 shot ?

No Rennmax, it was a BMW and appears diffent to Camathias's outfit but the book doesn't appear to explain much about it, although I suspect it's in there somewhere - I'll look more thoroughly later. Florian's FCS was essentially a Be'em ?

Here´s a teaser. Not a very well known jockey outside of his native land. Anyone know who´s piloting this little gem?

Alberto Pagani ?

Yes it was. To cut a long story short... there were some quarrels between ("we are the high mighty") BMW and Camathias. So he decided to name his outfit FCS, since the engine was highly modified from the original one BMW build in the mid-fifties and not really developed by the BMW works after that. The chassis was home made anyway, so there was no point calling it BMW and giving them publicity for nothing. His tuner Helmut Fath was not a real BMW fan either, so everything fitted together....

My personal view, no offence towards BMW, of course rolleyes.gif

It happened like this. I thought I´d find a tester for you, and saw this pic that said the rider was one "Alberto Pagoni". He´ll never get that one I thought. It was only when you posted the answer I realised who it actually was. roflmao.gif
I really need a lie down I think. Brains overheating.

Here´s another shot of him in SA in 1970 on the Linto.

Apparently Camathias loaned the FCS to Seeley in an attempt to help him (Camathias) win the World title. This is Colin's first ride on the outfit, Clermont Ferrand, '64. When placed third, Wally Rawlings lost his crash hat but Seeley kept going.......well, until black flagged, Syd Mizzen stuck his hat on Wally's head, back out they went and still finished fourth. When men were men.... lol.gif

Geez Russ, that´s some pic. Looks like not only has he lost his hat, but the zip on his leathers had come open. Also, is that a hole in the sidecar screen? That was some rough ride.

When a kid in the early 60's, it was great to watch Camathias, Duebel, Schiedigger, Kolle, etc, racing gainst the quickest Brit at the time, Chris Vincent. Paddock bend was always spectacular for the right handed chair guys.

Great shot, showing a lot of atmosphere. Is it a meeting at Brands ?

Highly regarded chap in Nürnberg, although not on that specific outfit

Fantastic shot - Eric's quite committed there, isn't he? Would this be 1958, when he finished 10th with Mrs Pat Wise in the chair?
Rennmax
Remember watching Chris Vincent at the GP Nürburgring '72 on the Münch-URS. He had some teething troubles in the first-half of the season with it, otherwise would have had a chance for the championship, I suppose

Perfectly correct.

I remember that sidecars were the highlight of any meeting and still are with classic racing.
After the Steinhausen / O' Dell era we used the sidecar meeting for going home taking benefit of non jammed roads

Well, I had my outburst on this issue already in another post biggrin.gif

Vincent was easily the fastest Brit and so spectacular, as a resut he crashed now and then. I once witnessed him slam into the banking by the bridge in the picture (wasn't this corner called South bank in those days), and Passenger Eric Bliss emerged high into the air on, I think, the other side of the bridge. Not sure if this is him coming out to do battle in this pic, which I took as a about a twelve yearl old. It's probably the race in which he crashed though.

That corner is exit of Clearways, now called Clark Curve :\
In the background the bridge was removed for the start of the 1976 season, just as well as I have seen so many riders off where the bridge used to stand!! eek.gif

I can remember that if one was lucky enough to have warranted a "lap of honour" on their lap car, you were always warned to "mind your head" when it went under the bridge :\

Talking of Chris Vincent,he caused quite a stir in the 60's when he suggested a passenger was'nt necassary and he could go faster without one.
On Pat Wise she also rode solo on manx Nortons. Its said she sat in that sidecar doing her knitting while Eric cruised it round.Good advert for Watsonian that one
On Florain Camathias did you here the on about when his transport broke down on the M6 on way to TT.Rather than miss boat he unloaded his BMW outfit loaded the gear on the sidecar platform started it and drove it to pierhead on open mega.

I heard that story Arthur. Apparently he was stopped by the police but made out he didn't understand a word of English and got away with it. I do wonder if it is an urban myth but it would be nice to think not.
