I remember Chris Vincent used to keep the chair wheel in the air for so long at the Elbow that it would stop spinning! I noticed his name yesterday as a guest at a local autojumble.

I remember Owen Greenwood being booed after winning at Mallory in the Mini, and I also recall he had a couple of match races against someone at Mallory - was that Vincent? There was also a fantastic picture at the time of the Greenwood Mini flipping - anybody remember that?

Hi TDH and welcome. I've posted this before but it recently got the chop....

The picture is out of a long gone Dutch magazine called Motorsport.

Dane had a monthly collumn in that magazine for some years around 1972-1973.

HP Müller was a NSU rider during this time. After he won the 250 worldchampionship in 55, he retired IIRC.
The venue is in Germany and has a name which has a meaning in English and French, but not in German...
Was used till the mid-sixties
Russell Burrows
Solitude...still don't know who though. Wasn't Muller about the oldest ever guy to win a world title- 50 or so when he won it? Just checked it out - 46, no spring chicken then....

How about August Hobl ? Sorry, no umlauts on my keyboard... smile.gif

Not quite as old as we are, Russ biggrin.gif

In fact, he was 45 when he won the title in '55 as a privateer against the MVs.
As already said before, he did it on a over-the-counter Sportmax. Even in the crucial state of the championship, NSU was not willing to provide him with an works twin (Rennmax) after their withdrawal at the end of '54. BTW, HP Müller was a pre war GP driver in the Auto-Union squad additionally to his 2 wheel efforts

On solitude....contrary to it's name, crowds up to 400 000 turned up there in the mid-fifties.
As far as I know, the only meeting where SMBH raced on 2 wheels as well as 4 wheels, the event in '64.

The rider in the picture is a German lad, who did quite well in the 350 cc table in '56...

Some facts about the bike, if of interest.

It's a 3 cylinder (1 horizontal, 2 vertical), the layout Honda adopted for the NS 500 IIRC.
Whacked out close to 50 HP in '56 when they pulled out and had a useable rev band 6800-11000 rpm, which is a lot for a racing 2-stroke IMHO.
So with some mild tuning, it would have been competitive for years ....

But the German motorcycle market collapsed in the mid-fifties and all activities (with the exception of the BMW sidecar thing) were stopped.

Another famous lady passenger.

Anyone remember the golden helmet races at Mallory? pudding basin helmets painted gold with metal wings sticking out each side.

And the sidecar handicap races, now they were always exciting.

And, thinking about other messages on this thread, I was at Oulton when my great hero Bob Machad his accident. The week after, every morning Mom and Dad would tell me the latest from the hospital on his condition. We were on our way to London, down the old A5, and stopped at a transport cafe near Northampton. A driver told my Dad that it had been on the news that Mac had died and I cried for the whole of the rest of the journey (its hard to get a cuddle when you're in a sidecar and your mum's on the pillion of the bike!)

Impressive though moving memory...

Bob Mac is well rembered over here, lapping the old Hockenheim circuit (before that Motodrom was built in '65) at 208,5 kmh...

What a great shot! Snetterton (before my time!) #37 Tom Dickie?
Used to be great to get up on the pits roof, the sound and the smell as they all went out on mass for practice!!!
Happy days. ambivalent.gif

Terry Vinicombe in 1st place ??
knickerbrook
Mick Boddice number 5? (Think Terry Vinnecombe is last chair in the distance?).

I thought Rod's warming-up area shot might have been Castle Combe.
