Nice pics Hemelya. I always though Arsenius's and Georg Auerbachers outfits were poetry in motion and also this was a lovely outfit Otto Kolle's being warmed up at a Solitude get together

Thanks for info, Russ .... which bings my rummaging mind to another question

When ended the era of "real" sidecars, i.e. bikes with 18 or 18 inch wheels (not neccessarily the size of the sidecarwheel) ? I guess it is around 58/59 by looking at pictues of the BMWs of Hillebrand or Schneider ? When was the last traditonal one topping the tables in UK ?
Thanks

That picture (how do I copy it into my post by the way?) - Bill Boddice; is his passenger John Tanner?; Mick Boddice; is no 23 Pete Brown?
TDH
Further to other posts - I heard the story about Flo driving his racing outfit through the Mersey Tunnel - that must have been worth hearing! And I remember that in the June after Bob Mac was killed we were in the Isle of Man and there was a big thunderstorm - Dad told me it was Bob warming his bike up in the sky - I'm filling up now, thinking about it!
TDH
Sorry - keep having bits reappear withou warning in my head - its not good for my work, this site!

I think it was probably the same year in the IOM, the year Vincent won the sidecar race (and Minter the 250s?), we were spectating at The Gooseneck, waiting for the first outfits to arrive when there was a sonic boom - Dad told me it was probably Max Deubel on his way up from Ramsey - I was very gullible!

And one other thing about Bob Mac - Derek Minter won the first McIntyre Memorial race at Oulton Park. I think it was probably held in August or September of 1964. Anyway, my brother was born in July of that year and christened Robert Braddan and after the race a photographer collared Mom, got her to hand the baby to The Mint and then took a picture of the three of them, Minter astride his bike holding my kid brother and Mom standing next to him. It was published in one of the papers (maybe the Blue 'Un) and if anybody could track down a copy that would be fantastic.

Martin Watson on the Aldridge Norton. Roy Hesketh 1965.

Hi,
What a great picture of Martin as you say on the Aldridge Norton it looks like Angels Angle at the great Roy Hesketh circuit and you are right I love it.
Looking at the bike it seems like it could have been the last race in SA before they were shipped to the UK in about February 65 both the 350 and 500 had the silver faring with the black and red pin stripes traditional Norton colours. Maybe I was being biased but I thought they looked fantastic.
I remember a comment early in the UK season in the MCN stating that the bikes Martin rode where elderly but rapid which my Dad was very happy to hear as he had done all the mods to get them up to the latest spec. Great days

Hi Renn, Didn't Eric Oliver race a Norton with shortened forks and smaller wheels from the early fifties ? I think his kneeler follwed not to long after this, so this too must have run with smaller and fatter wheels? I think it may have been in the immedate post war period when a chair attached to a pretty standard bike was last competitve. Later, even apparently standard looking Manxes were invariably lowered.

Is the top one the paddock at Oulton? Haven't got a clue who's in the picture. Middle one is obviously Greenwood at Mallory, and is the bottom one the Scitsu?

Perfect.
The shot was taken at the first GP of Austria on the Salzburgring (not counting to the worldchampionship that year) where Kaczor scored 1st and Karl Hoppe scored 2nd place on their Metisse framed Münch-URS bikes (MV didn' t take part)
So hopes were high to give Ago a run for his money in the GPs of this season, but this effort was a complete failure. The team fell apart (Messrs Fath and Münch being too strong characters to cooperate ?).
Kaczor, who was a engineer with BMW and was mainly involved in the R75/5 chassis development at the time, turned to a Yam TR2 and was killed in one of his fist outings in Ziersdorf, Austria in this season.

Well done Gripper - Roy is correct. Colin Seeley, in his book - a really good read by the way, available at Redline Books wink.gif - said he had crashed at Mallory a week or so before his fatal crash and had been knocked out or concussed. At Brands, the scene of the fatal crash, he charged along the top straight and just didn't sit up for Paddock and apprently rode straight into the bank. Seeley suggests he may have still been suffering the effects of the Mallory crash. The shot of Roy is from Biggin Hill, 1958. Was is Bernard who mentioned the old WW2 airfield in a racing context ? If so Bernard, can we have some more info please? As some of you know, Roy was probably destined for bigger and better things - great shame.
