Did he work together with Dr Gordon Blair ?

The mufflers are scratched, too ... he was obviously testing the ground clearance

Not on the same subject, but has anybody got a good picture of the Ecurie Sportive logo as used by Mike Hailwood when he was a privateer?

Morning gents. The logo is a bit obscured, but it looks a bit different to the one in your pic Russ. Probably an earlier version? Coulds be my eyes though. wink.gif

Still have the reply, hope to scan it in the next few days....

That's an interesting shot Rhodie, Hailwood's first trip to SA, astride the NSU (which model Renn? ) I too think that's Dave Chadwick on the Manx. Is the logo on the side of the van ? Or maybe some sort of Union style banner ! And did they really take an old van from England down to SA , or was the picture taken later back in Blighty? There seemed to be various forms of the Ecurie Sportive insignia ; I don't think though that 'Ive ever seen the more elaborate one with wheel and all the stuff on the siide of a fairing?

23 is reg Reg Everett on his home made Greeves racer - foreunner of the Silverstone. 11 could well be Alan Pavey on his NSU.

It's taken at the Manx GP Renn, where fairings were not allowed until 1962.

the Sportmax, of course....the production racer on which HP Müller scored the worldchampionship in '55...

doesn't Jan Kostwinder claim that he has the original SMBH bike ?

I so wish I did have the 7R Renn. I have tried to trace it, if only to find out more about its history...engine frame /number 4732, '61 model, and yes, last seen with that lovely Oldani front brake. My racing - I got the one way ticket to Palookaville without ever having been a contender. cry:

Yes, that is Dave on the Manx. I´m almost positive the shot was taken in Port Elizabeth, the scene of the PE 200, although I can´t say whether the van is English or was aquired in SA. The logo was definitely sign written on the side of the van. Quite possibly it was shipped over with everything needed for the trip packed in the van. Remember, those were the days of ocean travel, unlike today, where only air freight is used. If Stan had aquired the vehicle in SA, he would have had it specially painted for the occasion, however, the former explaination is the one I would favour.
Renso, you can just make out the words, "for love of....... next to Mike´s right arm. So yes, "for love of the sport" was their moto.

....and there was another motto.... "NIL DESPERANDUM" written on the arrow across the wheel in that logo...means something like "never become desperate", as far as my latin knowledge is still existent...

well, he didn't arrive out of nowwhere....we was the German champ in the 350 cc class in '68 on a Honda CR77 (didn't know there was one, can only remember the very rare CR72)....but he was probably a little more "flamboyant" than his rivals...but I can't get over the price he had to pay for the Honda six...if there is one around for twice the price of a firebalde, pls notify me ....

While we're on a Hailwood theme - this one is quite interesting. And the fairing in the backround seems to show a variation of the Ecurie wotsit....?

The pic I think is the late 50's, so could be his I suppose.....? I remember seeing him in the very early sixties with an E type Jag, and usually a well built young woman with him. No wonder I wanted to be him.......

What beautiful shots these are....... And was there ever a more aesthetically pleasing - and probably more effective - fairing than those Peels.

Whereas this one a decade later is damn ugly ?

Derek Woodmann on a Seeley on the IOM..

I think this type of fairing covering the handlebars and thus hands were quite convenient, esp in British weather...
GD66
Weren't they a QuB/Gordon Blair designed fairing, Russell ? The answer may lie in the book... wave.gif

The Peel type fairings obviously had a larger frontal area, and this apprently is a bad things in terms of slipperyness through the air, but so many slimmer, ie small frontal area fairings, exposed large parts of the rider outside of the fairing, ergo, can't work properly......?
This was surely most apparent from the early seventies -what was that all about ?
