Number 62 is Jim Simpson 22 Paddy Driver 24 billy McCosh 5 Mike Hailwood rider with back to could be Alan Sheperd as he was on the 2nd Privat MV 40 A Carlsson Ajs

Thanks Arthur, did you do the Island that year? Are you sure Shepperd got an MV ride at the TT? Im rabbitting on here without checking the database... eek.gif

Really ? News to me.... the iomtt.com database has Shepherd with dnfs in 1963 Senior and Junior TTs, on G50 and 7R. I understood Shepherd tested an MV but never raced one.

That's right GD it was either 62 or 63 that he stepped off the G50 at Bradden Bridge after lapping mucho quickly. I think he tested at Monza in '63, allegedly overevved it and got the flick.

Happy birthday Paddy. Looking great for your 75 years mate. wave.gif
BTW, that´s definitely not Alan North in the blue leathers. Not even remotely like him. He has grey hair today, but it´s still all there.
I have a feeling the gent in the blue leathers is Alan "squack" Harris, an old ex Rhodie mate of mine.

Hey Rhodie, Len Carcary called me today to confirm that it is Alan Harris but also to say that your memory's a little off! Alan's nickname was "Buddy". His brother Dave was "Squack" Harris.

He also noted that the guy on the left hand end is Jimmie Guthrie namesake of the famous one.

Your right Russell Alan Sheperd was a DNF on a Matchless G50.However he was entered in the official programme on a Privat 4 cylinder 498cc MV alongside Mike Hailwood. I guess the MV ride did'nt materilise. No did not do the island that year my first year being 1964 and that was a diaster like all my island races except 1964 was a bigger one than the rest

Hi Arthur, that lovely Guzzi had problems? What a shame Shepperd didnt get that ride - brillant rider, but such an unlucky sod.

Hi,
I did not realise that Alan Harris rode yamahas, I remember him on the very quick 500 Velo and assumed he had retired when he went back to Rhodesia.

I did have my doubts on the Squack nickname for Alan, I remember my Dad offering Squack ( Dave )a ride on the Nortons circa 63 and was all going ahead until Squack broke his leg and he could not take up the ride. I wonder if recalls that i sure he will as the Aldridge Nortons was one of the best bikes to be on at that time.

Hi Russell That Guzzi certainly did give me problems the 2 years I used it in the island 1964 in the 3rd and final practise sesion it threw a conrod at the end of mountain mile and the rod buried itself into the crankcase locking the whole thing up and tossing me over the bars. Not that I knew anything about it untill I woke up 2 days later in Ramsey hospital.
The next year 1965 it broke a valve spring coming down to the Greg on the 3rd lap of race Had hairpin type springs so I decided to retire rather than risk wrecking engine if other spring broke.
It was the days of racing on a shoestring for most of us and the machines were nowhere near as reliable in those days as they are now.

The big shot.

Was blatting through an old Classic Racer mag (Spring 1993, with the blue JPS Nortons on the front), when I spotted a small article where this pic was the crux of a name-the-riders competition. A reader had sent in the programme of Sachsenring 1963, and so to tidy it all up, the mystery rider on the #6 Norton is Gyorgy Kurucz. Roy Ingram and Ian Burne have been cropped out of the pic to the left.

Wonder what he would achieved with a engine not so , let's say.... venerable as the Norton pushrod twin ?
can recall quite clearly when both he and Mick Grant on a Kawa accelerated at the exit of Quarter bridge in 74 and the resulting gap....

Yes Renn, that the Norton was competitive at all was largely down to him. He should have been snapped up in the late sixties as a factory rider for someone or other : MV; Benelli; Jawa - no, not Jawa......

Russell,I saw Jim Whitham get off his GSXR750 in his 'formative' years (I think Grunty was the team boss) at the same spot. They chucked the the bike into the recovery van in 2 separate lumps. He limped away.
Also I think thats the the same spot that Barry Scully looped his Trident at in the early '70s.He broke his back though.

Some real exotic stuff there, but I guess it would be a close thing between the 'Rayborn' HD,or either of the 2 Guzzi singles. And I reckon it would be a Guzzi in the end.Just perfect, and the sound,well......

Great pics, Herr up.gif

Just one thing though, I think the machine above ( which has been raced in France by Philippe Monneret, among others ) is more meant to be a replica of the 1100cc "Lucifer's Hammer" machine that was ridden in the BoT races at Daytona by Jay Springsteen sometimes in the 90's , rather than a replica of the Rayborn-era 750cc XRTT .

.....but I've been mistaken before !

If you've got 32.000 Euros to spend, I think it's the same bike for sale by Hubert Rigal's company here :
http://www.classic-motorbikes.com/stock.as...A28&Lang=en

It does seem that unlike what I had written, both the original 1983 "Lucifer's Hammer" and this french replica are heavily based on original XRTT parts , including the lower engine ..... mea culpa !

Blimey, he was lucky to get away with that, it's flat out there.

Looked like a gearbox lock-up, no smoke from a blown motor but laid a long 'darkie' so pulling the clutch in made no difference.
