Russell,I saw Jim Whitham get off his GSXR750 in his 'formative' years (I think Grunty was the team boss) at the same spot. They chucked the the bike into the recovery van in 2 separate lumps. He limped away.
Also I think thats the the same spot that Barry Scully looped his Trident at in the early '70s.He broke his back though.

The 40s Scott photo was taken at Ballarat

re AWO... production started in 1950 based on the pre war BMW R 23 bikes. They prepared a race bike with that engine (with the crankshaft "inline" and a shaft drive) for '52 with a plunger frame and for '54 one with swinging arm.
In the following years, the engine was altered to a chain driven DOHC and finally they made a engine with conventionally positioned crankshaft and secondary chain drive.
The bikes in this pic look a lot like modified steet bikes, don't think they are the real mccoys....

Thanks a lot Renn,
I didn't know if they were proper race bikes or mods. They went quite well though and sounded the biz.I had a sneaky idea they were somehow connected to Simson,or would that only be because of the GDR regime?

Hi Herr, yes in fact it's Simson after all...The company was founded by Loeb and Moses Simson around 1850, the family was dispossessed in '34 but at least they managed to get out of Germany in '36....in the immediate post war era the company was integrated in the Soviet Awtowelo (Awo) corporation, but around 1960 the bikes, in fact only mopeds then, were called Simson again...
Sorry gents for boring you with this piece of German history...

Renn, not boring at all.In fact I have more than a passing interest as I used to road race an MZ ISDT replica (GS250, 1974).Yes complete with 21" front wheel and wide bars, before Supermotos became the fashion.Thank god for Avon Speedmaster tyres. The old thing went like s..t off a shovel!
Cheers HW

Edgar Strub is correct Russ, the crew on the top of the rostrum is celebrating their first GP win and Edgar's passenger became very prominent (no it's not Mick Wollett biggrin.gif )

It's the Swiss Joseph Siffert, who gained 2 F1 GP wins and also tamed the awesome Porsche 917...BTW, he started also in the TT on a Manx in the late fifties

Was that the strange 3 valve ( 1 in, 2 out) engine ?

Cartoon characters painted on crash helmets, sooo 1970's. I'm not sure who this MV pilot is - Colombo or Massetti after he defected to them ?

The configuaration is correct ? There were 3 valve engines of course, IIRC the TTF1 winning Honda of Phil Read in '77 and even the roadgoing CB 400, but these bikes had 2 inlet, 1 outlet....

The 7R was the other way around, two inlet, one exhaust. The tripple cam motor was based on a 7R bottom end that underwent various mods, with the final version replacing the camshaft drive train with a vertical shaft and bevel gears.
It wasnt a great succsess, although Rod Coleman did win the Junior TT in '54 with it. Accordong to the blurb on it, it poked out 40 bhp....about 3-4 bhp more than 7R's of that period?

Otherwise known as one inlet, two exhaust ..... blush.gif

Luvly jubly, pump the tyres up now and again..... and just race it clap.gif

One broken primary chain (coming out of Clearlways) was the cause of my one failure to finish a race on mine, and this was due to me fiddling with the olier.
