Hi,
Dickie and Bill Lomas did a 10Km record attempt in 1957 on this road with V8 Guzzi the 350 and 500 for the unlimited classes.
This was to co inside with the Rome show and it was a Guzzi PR stunt. The road was the Appian way on the way to Rome.
I beleive they set a record on the 500 at 152 mph with a top speed of 178 mph.
Pretty quick for 1957 and on open roads in rural Italy.
I think Dickie road the 350 and Bill the 500
cheers
Pete

Thanks Russell,
Yes fil2.8 you are correct. That was the easy one.

Spot-on Rennmax, this shot was taken at The Nursery Hotel at Onchan which was the Honda HQ. On this day in June, 1962 'Tak' was leading the 125 W/C and was 3rd in the 50 W/C. The next day he had a horrendous crash at Union Mills on his 125 Honda, which finished his racing that year but he bounced back the next year in 125 and 250's for Honda before going car racing.
I saw him a few years ago giving out the trophies on the podium at the Japanese Motogp.

Hi Roy, nice little vid of the bike of the very early days...

Re your CB 72, remember quite well all that prejudice when the bike came out over here, things like " too high revving, will never last" etc. What a giant step forward compared to a NSU Max or BMW R 27 up.gif

You are right Rennmax, I ordered that CB72 before there were any in the country, from a pamphlet. Yes it was a 'Rice burner', 'Sewing M/C' and would not last, but I had the last laugh. Before this bike I had a BSA A50 500cc Shooting Star. The rice burner left it standing.
It was what I had seen in the IOM in 1959-60-61 sold me to the brand.

Yes Renn , I had a Yamaha YDS 2 road bike in 1963 , the first one around here , and the narrow minded chat I used to get , you know , ---- rice burners , jap. crap etc . etc by the owners of practically every other bike was unbelievable rolleyes.gif
The trouble is the same feeling still exists in some areas . I go to a fairly local pub where the local ' Britsh Motorcycle Club ' hold their meetings . They arrive , mostly in Japanese cars eek.gif eek.gif confused.gif . A load of hypocritical bigots IMHO . Very , very blinkered people , to me , a biker is a biker up.gif

I have heard it all before, that is why the British bike industry died on its feet doing state of the art 'Badge Engineering''
There seems no takers for my third shot taken in 1962 at the back of the Nursery Hotel. It shows a Honda Rc162 250-4 being preped.
This was the first time I had ever seen a race bike started without being 'bumped'. On the stand, in gear and pull the rear wheel, bingo. We had a lot to learn.
More on the way.

Hi Phil, I know that kind of hogwash of those narrow minded people, but mmmm...Harley Davidson (and some BMW) fans run in their own league, but I would never disrespect their choice ..
Anyway, the CB 72 had a power output of 25 hp, the before mentioned German Bikes had 18 hp... the CB72 was what NSU could have done by producing a roadgoing Rennmax, but the German market was literally dead in the early sixties

Hi guys,
Sorry about the thumb nails, no idea why.
The top shot at the Gooseneck in the 125 1962 TT. This is interesting as it shows Tommy Robb on the works Honda Rc145 twin and the 1961 W/C Tom Phillis who is on a prototype production Honda twin. Honda brought prototype of 50, 125 and 250 twin production racers to test at the TT. Tom was to concentrate on the 250 title. Tommy Robb was 2nd in the 125 TT and Tom Phillis was third.
I do not have the model numbers for the 50/125/250 production models, any answers please.
The second Gooseneck shot was the the later 350 race showing Franta Stastny on his Jawa twin who came 3rd which he raced from 1960 to 1966. A great Czech rider fighting the faster MV's. Yes Gustav Havel was his team mate.
The s/c shot of Fritz Scheidegger with John Rawlings in the BMW chair was taken at Mallory Park in 1962. May have been the Race of the Year meeting.
Hope you liked them,
Roy

Sorry for the delay. I cannot keep up with you guys.
All three shots at the Gooseneck in 1962 S/C and 350 TT.
Phil Read Norton came home 7th in the Junior. The interesting part of this shot is his fairing which Phil was marketing against the Peel fairings. He called it 'The SlimPhil' as it was quite narrow.
I had to include the shot of Mike the Bike No.3 leading Gary Hocking No. 6 on the MV's on the road, but not in the race. This shows two great riders in action. Mike won and Gary came 2nd.
Sadly I did not get a picture of Tom Phillis as he never got to the Gooseneck before his crash. Yes he was leading at the time. He and Bob Mac were on the Honda 285cc -4.
Colin Seeley with Wally Rawlings in the chair of the Matchless on their way to 3rd.

Hi Roy, 'The Slim Phil' , ever on the look out to make a quid...... I've seen other pictures of him in this race and he appears to have a number plate stuck to the front of the fairing ? All seems very strange. He didn't go too well in the race - any recollection as to why?
