Otto Kolle..............TT '62 up.gif tongue.gif

Yes on my shot of the Phil Read 'Slimphil' fairing there is a separate number plate, maybe the ACU decided the front was to curved so made him put a flat plate over the nose.
Yes thats Earl Shilton's Finest, Chris Vincent with Eric Bliss in the BSA chair. That was some win in the 1962 S/C TT against the BMW's. and Colin Seeley was third on his Matchless.
Who was second? Otto Kolle and KD Hess in the BMW.
You guys are to quick, I will have to find some shots to make the little grey cells work.

Hi Roy, 'The Slim Phil' , ever on the look out to make a quid...... I've seen other pictures of him in this race and he appears to have a number plate stuck to the front of the fairing ? All seems very strange. He didn't go too well in the race - any recollection as to why?

No reason given in Phil Read - The Real Story...seventh in the Junior and a depressing retirement in the Senior after lapping at 100.39mph chasing after Hocking's MV.

He also mentions that in 1962 he was riding his own Nortons tuned by a wizard, if eccentric tuner called Bill Smith, who lived in the wilds, near Barton-in-the-Clay, Bedfordshire, and worked on the engines in a dusty, converted railway carriage.

Of course he went on to Steve Lancefield's bikes in 1963....

When I first clocked this I thought it was Rodney Gould...but then I came to think it was a Scandinavian whose name I can't at present recall....perhaps not. He seems to have non British leathers...not George Anschiedt is it?

Didn't even know that Marly Drixl was a rider blush.gif and the only Drixton rider I recall is Terry Dennehy on a much modified CB450, but I have no idea who rode a Drixton Aermacchi then confused.gif

Aussie Phil O'Brien raced a Drixton in GP's in 68/69 (He took it back to Oz and Tony Foale brought it back here in '71) ; I think Carruthers rode one for a while, Dan Shorey too? There were several knocking about in the UK around 70/71' Tony Blain I remember raced one here. As I sure you know they were long and low- very different from the Macchi frame.

This though is not how I remember them....

Ok guys , you eventually rolleyes.gif got it , after a bit of prompting tongue.gif I remember him quite well , and the Drixton Aermacchi's IIRC from about '67/8
The pic is from ' Motor Cycle ' 1964 !!! I always thought the Drixton's looked pretty neat up.gif
Try ' Googling ' him , it's pretty interesting .
Proper name Othmar Drixl ....aka ' Marly '

23 and 28 are 125 MV's.
The pic of Bob Mac was on the Honda -4. 285cc in the 350 TT in 1962 at The Gooseneck. Bob's bike was different to the Tom Phillis bike. It had the Potts mod of twin airintakes either side of the front number plate. He DNF and Tom was killed at Laurel Bank (I think)

Parkfield, Lightweight (125) TT Lap 1 1956.

7 Carlo Ubbiali MV Agusta

28 Ernesto Sirera Montesa

23 "John Grace" Montesa

1 Dave Chadwick L.E.F. (Lewis, Ellis and Foster)

As to Drixton 'Macchis, they are not unlike the 'Macchi Metisse, one of which I rode 1977 to 1984 (remember, HW?)

Marly I think copied the Rickman frame with small differences, and then subsequently disappeared with, I think, several people looking for him!!

Yes, Brilliant Larry. clap.gif

According to Mick Walker's book, that Ive just attempted to read part of on line, Drixl suggested the idea of building a more conventionally handling Macchi to the Rickmans. Not clear though who got the frame built first. I always lusted after the Drixton since drooling over Phil O'Brien's bike in Australia. I never did get to ride one though, nor the Mettise.

Friend of mine had a Drixton, I had the Metisse.

We swapped over once - neither of us could detect any difference between them.

I can tell you though that the Metisse had superb roadholding but diabolical handling!!

Unlike the "flexy" standard 'Macchi chassis, it gave no warning whatsoever before letting go.

It was like riding the Forth Bridge - going down from Keppel Gate to Kate's Cottage, over the fiendish bumps that used to be there, my eyeballs used to rotate back into my head and I always had to guess where to turn in!!!

Larry, wave.gif I remember it well, but 8 seconds is 'out of sight' on a circuit like Killalane.I didn't know who was in front of me,you'd all cleared off!My main concern was being run over by Bob (Hirst) and Sam (McClements) when they came round to lap me,but it never happened, thank the lord!
