Good morning all.
Thats a great picture of Carlo Ubbialli.
Does anyone have the race numbers in the 500 1953 TT of Les Graham and Carlo Bandirola on their MV's please.
I am also after any race numbers for all or any entries in the solo classes of the 1957 TT.
This will help us ID some more of Ian Simpson's photos.

This is an interesting shot as it shows the last of the 250 Guzzi and the first its replacements, the Aermacchi.
1/2 Renn, yes Arthur Wheeler who came home 4th is correct.
The Aermacchi is Gilberto Milani who was DNF.

Aye, I remember that one.

Not a great bicycle, the Benelli single, if it wasn't run by the factory.

Ralph Bryans rode one, and here in Ireland Harry Dunlop had one briefly, neither with any success.

My very good, and sadly late, friend Hans-Otto Butenuth tried to run a season with one (there wasn't a bike that he didn't race in his 40 year career!!).

Quote (verbatim!) "Shit bike, never finished a race"

Says it all really.

There was Pat Walsh who raced an MV in the early sixties. I think you're onto something Herr...... on closer inspection it dosen't seem to be watercooled ?

No Russell, thats what I was thinking.Only the 350 racer and some obscure very vintage Scotts were air-cooled.I've done some scraping in the TT results.P.J. Walsh rode an Ariel in L/weight 250,and MV in Ultra L/weight 125 races.

In a similar vein,my last job when I was 'English' was delivering soft furnishings (cushy number eh?).Took some to a place in Harrogate.Young chap in the stores there was,it transpired from the Czech Republic.Don't know much about the place says I,apart from some fine racing motorcycles and some very hard riders, one being Franta Stastny.Don't know much about bikes says the lad,but there used to be a famous Ice Hockey player in Czech, years ago, called Stastny.Did some digging on returning home to the 'archives',and it turns out OUR Frankie was a bit of a whizz on the ice,as well as being a damn good motorcycle racer!

You were closer first time around. It was taken in Bulawayo c.1963. The 7R belonged at that time to Len Carcary (from whom we got all the great Hocking photos). It was fitted with a Manx tank. Len is not sure who owned it after him but is pretty certain that it wasn't Errol Cowan.

Hello Guys,
Thanks Larry for sorting the 1953 500 TT MV numbers. We can do some sorting now.
Herr W, Thats interesting about Franta Stastni doing ice skating in the winter, one way to keep fit.
The first Ariel Arrow was campaigned by Mike O'Rourke, but that was in the standard pressed steel frame. This was a semi works effort, Herman Meir was hamstrungby having to use standard parts.
The pic is another one from 1962 250 TT.
Enjoy,
Roy

Franta Stastny's wife Jarmila was a Czech ice-skating champion.

As to the 1962 250 TT photo, that's my "uncle" Denis Gallagher, whose racing career ran from 1957 to this year's Skerries Road Races, where he was fetched off by a backmarker when scrapping for the lead of the 350 Classic Race.

A lovely man and an absolute star all his racing life - taught me the way round many circuits!!.

Dennis Gallagher is a bloody top guy (proper racer). That shot of him is when he is riding the John Clarke 250cc Velo KTT. The frame was built for John at Joe Potts' in 1958. John Clarke ran a dealership from East Kilbride, but previously had worked for Rolls Royce. John used his RR contacts in order to get special cranks made for the 250cc Velo engines (he made a few). I think Dennis finished 10th in the 63 TT on this bike.

Hi Larry,
Glad the shot of 'Uncle' Denis was appreciated. He had no joy on his Velo in 1962 but came home 10th the following year and another DNF on a Velo in 1964.
Thats interesting about the Joe Potts connection. After 1964 Ivan Rhodes raced a Velo in the TT twiceat least.
