Yes, Barry Randle
Does anyone have any information him now?
Martin Carney. from memory, he was very good on a Bultaco.
I could go and look him up from the old programms but I'll stick with the Bultaco for now.
Which reminds me of this Bultaco rider, Kevin Cass.

Probably slightly outside this era but I recall the first three years at Lydden Hill and seeing Charley Sanby winning race after race. His AJS/Matchless bikes all wore immaculate metallic dark blue Peel Mountain Mile fairings - the very best looking in my opinion - and although Charlie was a big man, he was fast and very stylish. Somewhere I have some colour slides of him at Lydden but it would take weeks to find them. It would be nice to see pictures of him again, Classicpics.

Talking about Martin Carney - what does he, John Blanchard and Dan Shorey have in common? (An easy one!).
I remember Charlie Sanby bringing three bikes to Llandow once in the sixties - as you say Paul, all with the metallic blue peel fairings with a gold stripe and absolutely immaculate. They were a 7R, 500 Manx and a 650 Triton I believe. There are some good shots of him on the Morton's Archive site.

Charlie Sanby's nephew Scott posted on this thread about a year ago. I wonder how he got on with collecting photos of his late uncle? It would be nice to see some of his pictures.

The think the common link to those three riders is that they all rode with a white neckerchief and an old fashion pudding basin helmet. Martin Carney and John Blanchard had very similar helmet designs where as Dan Shorey had a plain white.
My fathers rider Martin Watson had many a great dice with all three of them probably at the same time as the racing in the mid 60's was very competitive on the British short circuits. I seem to remember that Matin Carney rode only small bikes 125 & 250 where as the other two rode in all classes as did Martin Watson who had a full stable of 125 & 250 Bultaco,s and 350 & 500 Norton,s.

Yes pmboy - what I had in mind was indeed the white neckerchief that all three wore as a facemask.
I found this picture of Gary Hocking looking very relaxed, thought it might be of interest to his fans.

Yes Peter, thanks for that. That back tyre looks a bit worse for wear. Mind you, looking at that megaphone, the carburation is spot on.
Would you happen to know any details of the pic, ie, when, where, who´s machine, what machine (7R, G50?) and what is that transporter. Doesn´t look like a transit as it´s very low. I´m guessing it was taken in SA as Gary looks very young (19-20?).
I know these might sound like trivial questions, but Gary was, and still is, one of my idols, so any new and previously unseen pics, as well as infomation relating to said pics, would be greatly appreciated.

No: it is not a LWB Land Rover for certain. I think it will be either a Big Ford or Cheverolet Panel van with either a V8 or straight 6 motor. The picture was taken at the Roy Hesketh circuit circa 1960 and the round trip for all Rhodesian riders would have been close to 3,000 miles so they always chose some vehicle which could travel fairly quickly.
I will try and find more info once I get home tonight.

I may be wrong but I believe that when Dan Shorey left the sport, a bit like Percy Tait and Chris Conn, he never returned to do the 'nostalgia thing'.

Classic Pics,
Great pictures keep it up. To add to your comment on Dan Shorey I agree about never cleaning his bike they certainly were some of the dirtest around the paddock in the 60's. The bikes were certainly reliable enough as he was one of the greats of British short circuit racing winning a lot of races and championships in the 60's.
I can recall one particular incident at Cadwell circa 68 were he and Rod Gould tangled coming over the mountain. Rod did a huge wheelie on his Norton and then come down on the back of Dan and they then dissapeared into Hall bends in all of a tangle it was a real surprise that they both made it around and on two wheels. great days great racing.

Tom Kirby's motorcycle shop was at RONEO CORNER ,back in the day his Metisse race bikes were
always on public display in the "showroom",it was only a small shop but always clean and tidy.
As a teenager these bikes were pure unobtainium and to be able to stand and gawp at them thru the window after hours was a real treat.Back then my older brother rode british bikes, part of the pleasure of owning a british bike was the constant need for spare parts to keep or get them on the road.Tom's shop always had a constant trickle of people popping in to buy copious amounts of RED HERMETITE and GASKET SETS (pre silicone sealer days).
The shop and the racebikes were sold when Tom retired,The premises continued as a motorcycle
shop with the growing japanese roadbike domination it became DAYTONA MOTORCYCLES a sister branch to another at Ruislip.then much later in the 90's a nondescript car dealers which it remains to this day.
Tom Kirby had a brother REG who ran his own motorbike shop in GREEN LANE Dagenham,They didn't get on and never spoke to each other (some brothers are like that ha ha!)

Trevor Burgess - and on the Villiers Starmaker?
I don't know who the driver is but I believe that the the bike is a Greeves, not a Villiers. The front fork, brake and fairing are quite characteristic.

Definitely Greeves Silverstone. The 350cc version was called the "Oulton". I like the 'Jet' helmet.
ah sorry,i know it's a greeves(i had one) i was just doing thumbs up to the reply, i started racing on a silverstone it was as slow as my granny

T54 ! Nice to have you back

May I take advantage of your presence on the forum to ask you if you could identify the riders below ? This picture is from a race at Montlhéry in 1969 and was taken by Jean-Claude Arnold and posted by him on the "Mémoire des Stands" blog . The only rider I think I recognize is Jean Auréal on the official Sonauto Yamaha at the very top , but since those were "your" years I was hoping you could name a few other !

Well what alternative was there? The Starmaker engine was derived from their motocross engine, was light, simple and available.

about 35 years ago ,i spoke to a chap in Chalk Farm,Camden who told me he owned
Bill Ivy's Cotton racer and he had been offered a brand new Norton Commando as a straight swap by someone at NVT as it was then

Hi Philippe!
I am so busy and have so little time to spend on this great forum... I wish you as well as to all here, a Merry Christmas.
To answer your question, behind Jean Aureal and the TR2 is the A1R Kawasaki of my friend Roland Zerchot, the first man on the planet who built cast-alloy wheels for racing motorcycles as well as the first 4-into-1 exhaust system for the 750cc Honda.
To the right of Jean, I know all these fellows but I have to get back to my brain cells to figure out who they are because of my early Alzheimers disease signs!
The 350cc Aermacchi could be that of Barone. Next is a 7R of ??? but the green Manx is Philippe Canoui. Next is a Manx belonging to a fellow called Chevallier from Lyon, no relation with the later one who was racing a 50cc Mondial at that time in the "Jeunes Tigres" for Georges Monneret. I will check my files to find out the others. This appears to have been taken at the Coupes du Salon, my last race in Doulce France before I split to the Evil Empire for good.
Kind regards,
T54

Salut Philippe

et joyeux Noël également
What I know is that this race was at a joint cars and bikes meeting, which would indeed fit with the "Coupes du Salon " if my memory serves me right
On the site of Vincent Glon, there is a chapter where he tries to collect as many results of the French races as possible, the link to the year 1969 is
http://racingmemo.free.fr/M%20FRANCE/MOTO%...ANCE%201969.htm
and that joint 350/500 race was apparently won by Auréal from the Norton of Patrick Lefèvre
Hi Philippe,
I know the site well because I have contributed to it thanks to the magazines I kept from that time. I wish that the author would also post other placings since I provided them to him.
I will do my best to get the names on the picture sorted out ASAP.

The TT database has Dan down for the MGP in 1960 (9th in the Senior) - and the TT proper in 1961 (Retired in the Senior). In the Ebay photographs I see that the bike has the earlier "Oldhams Coupling" bevel drive to the camshaft (correct for '58), as opposed to the splined shaft that came in 1959 onwards, and it hasn't got the later 2MTT magneto either...............so I don't think I'll buy it
