Yeah, Tom at Fishermans Bend, '57.

That was a nice one of Tom, a fine rider.
Now here is a shot two for the price of one. Who are they, at Mallory 1962, 350 event.

I have no idea who is who.
From snowy Leicestershire.

Love these paddock shots Roy - no idea on either of the riders though. The transporter, with what appears to be an NSU alongside, seems to be 'continental'. The 7R pilot has that look about him too - is it the headgear? Perhaps its the RoY or post TT meeting ? Wonder if I have the programme....

I hope you have the programme Russ, its not the ROY (30-9-62) and not the the 11-6-62 meeting but it was the one earlier when Gary Hocking #1 was there with his MV.

Mallory 10 06 1962

20 Hugh Anderson

16 in the programme is Roy Mayhew but I have him down as a non starter

Other non starters Alan Shepherd and sadly Tom Phillis

Can't find any reference to Hocking being at Mallory before June in 1962 and he was No.1 at this meeting beaten by Mike in the 500 final. Looks like it was a bright day too.

Maybe this is a poor effort, but I'm sure you'll put me right!!

Fil,

Not sure about all of them but Phil Read 4, and think it's John Taylor 7 on Tom Kirby's bikes, 34 Griff Jenkins??, 9 Rex Butcher (with Bill Ivy partly obscured behind him), 67 Martin Ashwood ?? with Derek Minter just behind him. Don't know 84 or 25, but think it's Druids at Brands.

Tom Kirby used to use a garage in Onchan near one of our friends' houses. My brother and I used to clean the bikes for him sometimes after practice - John Taylor had the G50 and Alan Barnett was riding the Metisse - they used to refer to Kirby as 'Uncle Tom'!! The G50 may well have been one of those two bikes in the picture!

All the best.

Degens routinely took that tight line round Druids; after accelerating out of Paddock he would suddenly whip accross the road to the right and clatter his way through Druids on the inside. He was not universally popular I seem to remember.

Look at those styles

Read slight body lean, head forward

Butcher, Jenkins, Williams (yes I know I was wrong) in line with the bike

Ivy hangs off

Chandler knee out, some body lean

Minter body lean, head at an angle

Degens, big lad, a lots of body lean

And the crash hats, same design throughout their careers! You could recognise riders in in them there days. or is just that I took more notice then.

Hi Larry, see what you mean but not Dickie.

Or.....I pinched this pic from God knows where and it claimed to be Dave Bennett the factory rider killed in the Swiss GP of '52; Larry's post has triggered something in my head about seeing this or a very smilar picture purporting to be of Dickie Dale...... So Chaps, is this Dave Bennett?

I think this very rough pic is supposed to be Dave.

Hi Boys, I have found who the mystery BMW #5 outfit taken at Mallory.

I was wrong with the date, it was 1961 24-9-61 Race of the Year. Edgar Strub and Karl Huber from Switzerland. I always admired Mick Wollett when he ballasted for Edgar, Just imagine one of those fairey's from MCN doing that today.

Russell, was the death of Dave Bennett the catalyst for the ban on all motorsports in Switzerland or was it due to something which happened at a later date?

Apparently, it was triggered by the Le Mans crash in '55 in which around 80 people died (is that right, seems a huge figure).

I think Dave Bennett was killed in his first GP as a Norton factory rider.

Yes, lots of people died http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Le_Mans_disaster

That may not be the correct or full story - there have been threads on the Nostalgia Forum, trying to get to the bottom of what exactly happened.

It still seems a little strange to me that Switzerland banned all motor sport following an accident in another country, albeit a major tragedy in which so many lost their lives.

Perhaps it was a sign of the times, when a degree of fatalism was present in motor sport and death was part and parcel of the sport during that period.

It just seems to me that it was a kneejerk reaction by the Swiss authorities to ban all motor sport sine die, that's all.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will come along and explain in more detail?
Rennmax

Morning gents, the Swiss didn't ban all activities, hillclimbing, apart from moto-cross etc, went on.
Some nice pics of a remarkable meeting, which is still run as a classic meeting on a shortened track

Good morning gents. I have found the answer to my mystery 350 Mallory shot. I may have misled you with the date, it was ROY 1961.
#20 Alan Flack AJS and #16 Keith Crawford AJS.

These were two of the SA continental circus riders of the time with Paddy Driver.
I beleive the NSU and BMW outfit by the VW van were of Horst Burkhardt #52 and #4 Forian Camathias BMW.
All good stuff.
Enjoy,

I very nearly made a reply to this post but thought I would be making a complete clot of myself. I recognised the helmet of the rider in the background as being similar to the one worn by Keith Crawford, a Durban lad, but thought it couldn´t be as I wasn´t aware he raced outside of SA. Oddly enough, I thought the front rider was Capetonian Ray Flack, of later DKW kneeler fame, but not Alan Flack who I don´t know.

So chaps are we saying the 7R piolt is Ray Flack? I remember him as being extraordinarily thin and this bloke looks the part. Also, how many SA road racers in Britain around the period with the same name?
