Can't agree Those numbers are not white on a black background and although Fred was 26 in 125 TT 1968 41 was C Rogers on a bultaco
I think its the 250 race 41 being Dave Williams on a Yamaha and 26 being T Holdsworth on a Greaves

Hi Arthur

I'm pretty sure it's Fred, look at his goggles and helmet and the forks. John

This is from the 250 race

From the same spot, Read on the 125 Yam.

Note the two in the background in both shots, they are the same.

Agreed its poor old Fred who stayed in the same guest house as me with his greyhound dog and 41 is Rogers Bultaco The close up shows white on black number George Todd was Freds Bantam mechanic we used to moan at them when they took up more than their share of the workshop space.

it's close together anyway...the caption reads " Senior 1912, Frank Apllebee at Keppel gate" (Nick Harris TT book) so the gate used to be after the cottage (well, 100 years ago), now the section before is Keppel gate rolleyes.gif

So that's the race where Bill Ivy stopped to let Lutonboy win ? In Read's "real story", he admits fairly and squarely that he couldn't match Bill's pace that day on the 125...
BTW, we all know Phil's lid, but what does the badge exactly show ??

Renn,

Hi. Nice sequence of photos these - my brother and I were watching at Governor's Bridge on the same day! The crest on Phil Read's helmet design I think was the Jersey emblem wasn't it? He lived in Jersey at the time as I seem to remember.

All the best

Ray Oldam
Fil,

I was close, but not close enough! Right area but the wrong Island - yes it was Guernsey - you are right of course.

All the best.

I suspect so, Phil. Actually I tire of people bagging him left right and centre because they choose to take the moral high ground over the Ivy situation, without knowing either party or the facts involved. I have met and interviewed him on a number of occasions, partied with him and chatted with him and although he is without question an extremely complex character, he did what he had to do at the time and as a result, he is Britain's most successful living motorcycle racer. Often the public draw perceptions about people without delving into what lies beneath, in Lutonboy's case it takes a lot more excavation before any summary can be made. But his results sheet speaks for itself... clap.gif

I could'nt agree more , up.gif I also have met him and shared a beer , a few times over the last 40 odd years and direct , forthright , yes , I am a huge Phil Read fan , and tended to side with him over the Bill Ivy situation , after all it was Phil who got him the ride in the first place IIRC .
Yep , a star all his adult life , he's ok in my book smile.gif

One lovely morning I went out early to my interview at Waltham Forest for my bike mechanics interview and stopped off to fish at Bletchingdon...It was cold so I lit a fire, hid my gear to go down to London and came back to carry on. Well I thought I'd put the fire out but when I got back there was tree burning from the inside by the river. I made my escape on my CB900/1100 and the tree was gone next time I went eek.gif eek.gif I think it just burned out! I'll catch up with the fishing in a message Pete! Things seem quiet so can you help me ID the driver/rider of this outfit. I took it on 16-4-61 at the Wichford Sprint.
I think the outfit was called a 'Scitsu' and was possibly raced also. It appears to have a V-twin engine and the fairing comes from an aircraft drop tank.

Thanks,
Roy yawnface.gif
