Not the faintest, re the riders. Mere Hairpin, Scarborough at a guess. Looks like a CMA/Degens brake on the lead 500, (Alan Peck ?) so probably around 1965/66

What's Russell's phone number... ambivalent.gif

He hasn't got a bleedin clue either. 131 appears to be a TD1 B/C Yam.... late model Manx brake on 19 - the rider of which bears some resemblance to George Gallagher, maybe - so Scarborough mid, or more probably, late sixties must be about right.

Looks a bit like Bill Smith, actually. And #44 looks like a 500 Triumph or Norton twin : probably a Norton, with the long taper meggas.
Might even be a Fontana on #19.

Someone else must be howling into the braking area though, as there are a few in the crowd looking back towards the start line....

Jack Finlay on No 71? Possible sighting of kangaroo on helmet?

Normally a white kangaroo on a blue helmet though, Terry wave.gif

The George Collis theory sounds ok, though....

I open this thread because I have a great interest in those years and with Honda pulling out at the end of 1967 there was a big change in MC Racing. So IMO there is a logic in the years above
Also we had a great period with many fantastic MCs , riders and championships. I hope many of you think the same and wish for lots of pictures , indos etc. and perhaps some transporters or paddock pics as this area is my special, and there is even less in MCs than on Car Racing. Infos on books , articles , tips on MC sites , anything goes.

It was Norman Lee that owned the rumbling tum in streatham SW16,he was a good friend of mine,Bill Ivy once had a coffee there! .Norman passed away a good number of years now.RIP

Sorry Russell, i never did. The track was closed in 72 i think and would have been only 4. My dad talks a fair bit about it as it was his 2nd nearest track. I was brought up in Sevenoaks, so Brands was the closest. The first real bike race i remember would be at brands and i take it to be a Hutchinson 100 as it went the original way round. Sheen etc was there and i remember a Jap rider coming off out of Paddock big style as straw was sent flying etc.
My dad did get to meet Colin Chapman at the Palace and at Brands, Colin couldnt understand how his Cortina's would catch my dad on the bends but not keep up with him on the straights and would ask what engine has my dad got. My dad used a Manx engine but was looked after by Steve Lancefield so not a slow motor.

Kevin.

12 is obviously George Formby, what about the rest ? Be quick, Larry could be lurking.

A tight little circuit that seemed so often to produce really close racing. A fair bit of of the old track remains still.
dommieracer
The Sevenoaks and District Motor clube seem to do the odd bit at the Palace. I had several races around the UK that older gents would come up to me and say ' you must be John's boy, smooth like him but not as fast!' Oh how easy could it be to go off your dad. ambivalent.gif

Er - sadly no, it was practice at Le Mans in April 1966, Russ, as far as I remember.

And yes, I was there in '64, spectating at the Flow Bog Crossroads.

Little did I think that 10 years later I'd be riding there . . . . . . . .

No, Bill, Ray was riding his own 350 - didn't always ride stinkwheels!!

Hi Larry
Is there any chance of posting a copy of the cover & results pages of 1956 Ulster 500cc GP? John Hartle's first GP win. It would be good to have with the rest of my memorobilia.

Well, #95 in the background looks like a Parilla, (Dick Wyler ?) but the van says Ginger Molloy, so the group in the pic could be Antipodeans, still tea garglers though...

You're right on the Parilla, Larry. The guy in the foreground was a circus regular who, I think, stopped racing for a bit and then came back and was killed not too long afterwards.

Don't think we're going to get this chaps, are we. It's Vernon Cottle at Albi in '64. The guy standing next to the Ducati is Peter Gibson. I wonder if he's the same Pete Gibson who around 70/71 was quick on a 500 Seeley?
GD66
If that's the same Pete Gibson of Gibson Exhausts, he's alive and well in Victoria, Australia, has a lovely Rennsport replica BMW sidecar and his son Paul races a TR500 Suzuki.

I will pass on the pic to a friend of his to try for further id...

Vernon Cottle featured in a pic we had on a while ago with a 500 GP field setting off in East Germany, it appears he was killed at Imatra in 1964. No good.
Russell Burrows
For those interested in circus racing during the mid sixties, this is worth a gander - some good pics too wink.gif
