Hi there, I remember you. First National win aye, you must remember how you put it across him?

Firstly, having had another look at the photo it was definately '65 as I hadn't yet got the stripey leathers and the bike and helmet had got a dayglo finish. If I remember correctly Dave and myself had a nearly race long dice changing positions many times, four i think on the last lap alone. The Tohatsu being much lighter than the Honda was better at breaking and acceleration but there wasn't much difference in top speed. I followed Dave into the last corner (Camp ?) a double apex right hander, turned in earlier and quicker and managed to squeeze through the inside of him. Kept the throttle against the stop running well wide right up to the grass, made myself as small as possible and waited for him to come past before the line, amazingly he didn't. Dave was one of, if not the nicest bloke I ever met during my racing and it was a tragedy he was lost to us in the way that he was.

In the 1954 TT report issue of Motor Cycling (June 24th) the man in Harris' chair is referred to as G. Holder. In the race report it mentions that he was partnering Harris for the first time.

I couldn't find any mentions of Hartle having been his passenger during practice so I'll see if I've got any other issues covering the earlier events.

Jack Brabham???
GD66
Jack Brabham used to race motorcycles, if you look in the 1948 Bathurst programme, you will find an entry for J Brabham, 500 Velocette. Also Jim Redman tells a great yarn about a test day at Suzuka, I'd say it was in 1965. Jim was at one stage in line to race the Honda F1 car, and Jack Brabham had a Honda tie-up from the fabulous F2 Brabham-Hondas. Anyway, Jack turned up at the test day and expressed a desire to go for a gallop on one of the narrow power-banded 50s or 125s. Aware of the finicky techniques required to get the best from the tiddlers, Jim suugested Black Jack try the more user-friendly 350 four- cylinder, by then almost perfect as Jim had won the World 350 title each year since 1962. Brabham went out, and after a couple of quiet laps, wound it up and howled the 350 round Suzuka at a pretty fair clip. When he finally pitted, it was merely for more fuel, and then out he went again, and continued apace, revealing at the end his utter enjoyment, and his previously-unknown bike racing background. He's a boy, that Brabham !

wave.gif Hello guys , I am still hoping for some answer to "pykey" question ? Allthough I like all kind of infos or discussions , I believe it to be much better if they come in the rightfull threads !

Just to take an example : Who is going to search for infos on Jack Brabham here ??? And its a very interesting info , indeed ! But Who ? I have been much around here , and there is so much onfo on people or cars etc. spread around on threads where they should not be ! Do you get my point. Right now its more or less obvious to talk about , but later , you wont find it ! Or worse , believing the thread title hoping for a lot , and there is nothing ! smoking.gif

Another Ducati but not strictly a racing bike, although it was raced at Bathurst after I sold it. '66 Mach I, pretty aye.
Paul Rochdale
The Ducati Mach 1 was claimed at the time to be the first 100mph roadgoing 250. Could it really do that and hold together? ;-) Yes, a very attractive bike indeed.

I'm led to believe this a 250 ducati in the early '60s - anyone agree?

Really odd seeing that pic. It suddenly brought back long lost memories of me having lusted after the Mach 1. I thought it was the most beautiful road bike of it´s time. Had really racy lines and went like the clappers. Sadly, I never got around to owning one though. smile.gif
GD66
I seem to recall from reports of proddie racing in the mid-sixties, ably penned by Ray Knight in the pages of MCI, a very quick Mach 1 pedalled by a one-eyed racer called Clive Thompsett, who invariably won the 250 class of most PR events. Quick as he was, I don't recall him branching out into open-class racing, and wondered why. Anyone ?
renzo
eye ;) remember him well ,didn't know he only had one though.
i think he was in some mgp's in the 70's like me.

no idea - He'll know and I'll try and remember to ask hiim. I'll guess at Brands though and, judging by the hairstyles and the fact that its pre his Yamaha days, '62-'64?
knickerbrook
Is 76 Reg Everett?
knickerbrook
Is there a Tom Kirby connection? Looks very much like a Kirby fairing plonked on a 250.

I believe so, but don't know more than that.

Hello,

I have seen that you have mentioned Tom Phillips, would you have any pictures on this person as he is my dads cousin and i would really like to find out more about him or where i could go to get information.
Thanks
Emma
Classicpics
Tom was an excellent rider. I remember him racing his Greeves and if my memory is correct he once crashed in the Mallory Esses breaking both his legs. His white crash hat bore a single eye in the centre.
Russell Burrows
Do you remember him being particularly good in the wet? I think I can remember him duffing up everyone at a very wet Brands, around 63ish.

Hi Emma,
I,ve got Tom down at a Mallory meeting on 250 Aermacchi,350 Aermacchi, and a 500 Manx Norton.Alas no results, but a busy bloke,as this could mean 6 races(7 if he was invited into Race of the Year,30 laps!)if he reached the finals.Could have been getting on for 90 laps not including practice.Makes me tired thinking about it.

The location is straightforward, but who are these guys?
Paul Rochdale
No1 is Tony Godfrey.
Russell Burrows
Yes, Tony Godfrey, who, just a few weeks later would have a dreadful crash during the lightweight TT when his Yamaha seized - essentially finishing his career. One of the other blokes went on to achieve megga fame ? ? ?

Correct smile.gif The other guy is Ian Goddard, probably on the Pinks of Harrow Manx. It's Brands,1963, approaching Druids. In those days Ray would be dead chuffed to get into the first six as he had only been racing for a couple of years. Was it too easy?

Two were!!wink.gif
Russell Burrows

What a great period shot, but perhaps less easy?

O.K clues : both went on to further fame, but probably very little fortune. One of them died at a very early age due to non racing circumstances.
