...for me, that is.
I don't know why but my computer simply will not let me play any more.
Could it be that I now have Windows XP and my Legends is for '95 and '98?
I tried uninstalling the original version that has been on my hard drive for years (the contents were copied over when I updated from Win '98) and re-installing. It appears to go in o.k. but during the installation I get a message that file 'wininet.dll' cannot be installed.
Then, when I try to run the game, with the disc in, I get a message that says the following:
Instruction at 0x10001265 referenced memory at 0x0185fd00. The memory could not be written.
And that's the end of that!
I am very sad.....
Barry,
Sorry to hear about it.
Can anyone help ???

A few things which I may remember...
The wininet.dll thing you could disregard.. Installing over XP always give this warning but it's a non-factor.
1) Try setting the gpl folder and sub-folders to 'Allow Fast Indexing' or to unset it if it is on.. I don't remember which it is it must be set at, but I hear it's one of the culprits for winXP.. (right click the gpl folder, properties, check (or uncheck) the checkbox..)
2) Don't forget to update the game... It was originally done for 3DFX accelerator cards which are out of business for near 8 years now.. Finding the updates might take some searching the forums at rscnet.org (racesimcentral)
3) An perhaps easier thing to try would be to download the so-called "GPL 2004 demo" (actually, the old demo but with all updates applied). It has updates for graphics and such, plus all cars updated as of late-2004. You only need to add in the track folders from your CD (without overwriting WatkinsGlen which is included in the demo).
Hope this helps. If not, on racesimcentral forums, there's one thread by Bob
Simpson about troubleshooting GPL installations... It's a must read.
Good luck
[edit]corrected name[/edit]
GPL WILL WORK IN XP
not allways quick or eazy but it will work
I had to try many times to get it to load
finaly it loaded
2004 demo D/L is a very good idea to start with
as that saves alot of patching and upgrades
once you do get GPL up dated and patched and running
burn a copy to CD or BETTER DVD
so you can reload quick and eazy if needed

Thank you, gentlemen. Job done!
I downloaded the demo and have just driven an Eagle, very slowly

around Monza.
I guess I will have to re-install the '65 option and all the tracks I used to have in the game but at least it is working now. I am very grateful.
Just one thing; each time I click to make changes or start practice or stop etc, it seems to take a very long time to bring up the next screen. Is this normal with the demo version?
BTW, Max, I cannot seem to find the options you mention about Fast Indexing. When I right click and go to properties, that option doesn't seem to be there.

You might be thinking of my thread - GPL Troubleshooting FAQ at
http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=105748
The "Allow fast indexing" tip is in there, but if GPL runs at all, it's not a problem. It's found by Folder > right click > Properties > Advanced
I've found that slow menus (how slow are we talking?) are due to other applications running. Virus checkers are sometimes a problem. Make sure that you have GPL.EXE and any other related EXEs set as friendly in the virus checker. See if you can find EndItAll2 to close unneeded applications.

Everything is working brilliantly now!
Many thanks to all who have given help and info.
I have begun the task of re-installing all the tracks that I had lost when I removed the old version of the sim; plus some new ones that have appeared while I was out of it.
Just one puzzling thing though; when I try to load some tracks I get the message that the "Install.ini" is missing or not valid. This has happened with Pau, East London, Mallory Park and several others. Yet many more load up perfectly.
Is there something I can do to load these recalcitrant circuits?
BTW, I saw Monsanto Park by Sergio Loro, for the first time last night and I must say that he has done a FANTASTIC job on that circuit.
I drove and walked the circuit in 2002 and Sergio's version is so good I cannot believe it. Does anyone know if he has actually been there?

I don't recall an install.ini problem. Are you unzipping the files before installing? That would be problematic. There should be an install.ini when it's unpacked in the temp folder that you put the files in.
The install.ini file has the information for that track that gets put into the 67season.ini automatically.

Hi Barry
I think Sergio was not there, but he got first hand information for some portuguese GPL friends. As you said, it is a hell of a track

I would love to start trying out the 2004 demo. Can someone point me to a direct link to download it? I just want to make sure I am getting the correct download. Is it about 86MB?
Thanks,

all the tracks need a "Install.ini" in the track list
the autoload ones put the "Install.ini" in the track list automaticly [little red car thing]
the ones without it need it typed in or cut and paste it from the read me
not real complex just a track name and number
short name ect
should look like this one for kyalami
[Event1]
name=South African Grand Prix
shortname=South African GP
trackDirectory=kyalami
month=1
day=2
numberOfLaps=80
startingGrid=4

I remember I had boot into "safe mode" in W2k to get it to install....otherwise I kept getting that annoying "this is not w98" message
also W2k & XP have a compatability mode you can enable to run old software, it emulates w98 or NT etc
if that's any use to anyone.....

Having just downloaded and installed the 1969 mod, I find that although everything loads up o.k. I get the message "UNABLE TO LOAD TRACK" no matter which track I try to run on.
Have I missed something?

Suggest you also post on RSC Barry. And also check Bob Simpson's RSC FAQ thread. I assume you have the links for these?
Do you get this error for all tracks using 69 mod?
Do you get this error if starting 65 mod or original 67 GPL from GEM+ ?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm interested in how you find the 69s. My league raced 69s last year on Tasman tracks and then CanAm tracks, I enjoyed the 69s more on tracks with straights that let you unleash the power, and with some mid-fast sweeping turns - Sandown, Wigram, Riverside, Road Atlanta ...
Barry Boor
Jan 16 2007, 09:05
No, starting both '67 and '65 from GEM, as I always do, everything is fine.
I will check out RSC and look for Bob Simpson's thread.
It does occur to me, however, that yesterday I downloaded something that was called 1969 part 2. I couldn't see part 1 anywhere. Could this be the problem?

No. 69 mod part 1 was original release with high-wing graphics, and wing angles adjusted before starting GPL. There was also a physics bug discovered in part 1, IIRC high front wing + low rear wing settings were adding more downforce and less drag than expected.
69 mod part 2 had updated physics with wings adjusted in-game from setup screen, + high wing + low wing carset graphics. If you already had 69 mod part 1 installed you were asked to delete some 69 mod files before installing 69 mod part 2.
So you don't need 69 mod part 1.
Suggest you reinstall the latest GEM+ to make sure you have latest version 2.4.64. Doesn't hurt to install GEM+ over the top of your existing GEM+.

I do have GEM 2.4.64 and it works both 65 and 67 perfectly. There must be something wrong somewhere else.
However, I will re-install GEM just in case.
Thanks to all for the suggestions.

O.K. I have downloaded and re-installed GEM 2.4.64 and it still works perfectly with '65 and '67 and still cannot load tracks on '69.
Maybe I'll just forget it and wait for 1955.
OK, I have installed the 2004 demo package. And as of right now everything works great!!!!
Watkins Glen looks amazing. As does the interiors of the cars!! You guys are amazing. So how do I go about adding a few different tracks? Where can I find them? Is there add-ons that I should add? And where do I get the new car and year mods? I'd like to try a different year. What are the different years that are offered?
Sorry for all the questions but I haven't played in about 5-6 years and after playing on my keyboard(my old steering wheel won't work with my new computer) I am as excited as a kid in a candy store! My wife isn't so thrilled!
Thanks,
Neuz

For new tracks go to:
http://gpltd.bcsims.com/
Most tracks now come with an automatic installation icon so when you have unzipped the files into your 'tracks' directory in GPL just a click on the little red car and you can be driving on a new track within a minute or so.
That is, if the game lets you....

I suppose it was obvious really!
I just re-installed the '69 mod from its Setup.exe that was already in the gpl directory. It appeared to install in exactly the same way as the attempt I tried the other day, but this time it WORKS!
Thanks again to all for the help and suggestions.

dear barry!
i really apreciate that kind of words, i worked very hard to recreate this circuit and try to give it a 59's feeling
when i released monte claros (the short version of monsanto used by f3 in 1967) i feel very sad because a portuguese guy told me track was totally innacurate, the trees, the lamp post, etc....
but now when i read your words i feel very happy. the pictures you post here long time ago was the starting point of this project.
now i hope bring to life Reims '51, Aien Diab and Pescara, some of the missing track we have.
do you know the Targa Florio tracks is really close to be release??? stay tuned
see you

Here's a weird one....
After suffering with a 14" monitor for 10 years, I have finally taken the plunge and bought a flat screen, 19"" version.
I have set its resolution at 1440 x 900 for general use.
When I load up Legends, I set off around my first lap and after a few seconds, right in the middle of my screen, I get the message telling me to change the screen resolution to 1440 x 900 - which, as I say, it already is.
When I go into the options menu on Legends, there is NO option to change the screen to that size. The largest option is 1280
x 1024.. Therefore, this damn message keeps popping up and blocking my view of the track.
Am I missing something somewhere?
