Am planning to head over for next seasons Belgian GP.

Have never been before, and am looking to camp near the circuit, does anyone who has been before have any suggestions as to where is best to camp?

I have managed to find three websites for camping locations so far:

www.eaurouge.nl

www.francorchamps-racing-hotel.be

www.francorchamps-camping.com

Has anyone used any of these campsites before, and if so how do they compare?

Thanks!!

Been twice camped on both times...Plenty of camp sites...but choose carefully... drunk.gif Some near the bars get a bit to rowdy 24hr Thurs to Sun.

I've stayed in the same place on the outskirts of the village (basically in some-ones back garden) but still within walking distance of the bars and track....commuting is not an option !!!

The facilities are basic...but so much better the Magny-cours.... down.gif down.gif down.gif
(I think i still have my camp sticker on my car...with the address and possibly the phone number.)
Try and get to the village no later than lunchtime on thursday for a decent pitch...before it turns into a free for all scramble.

I'll be going back this season....It has something which I can't put my finger on, but its a completely different atmosphere from any other GP...The setting alone has a certain something ?

Jeez...I sound like the tourist board (I'm not !!) lol.gif

If you dont mind the noise Francorchamps is a great place with a short stroll to Eau Rouge. The Francorchamps Hotel serves a great breakfast.

i've stayed at the eaurouge campsite - its pretty basic but decent enough, the name is a bit fake as the campsite is on the outskirts of stavelot village which has nowt in it really and walking along the road you enter at stavelot corner and its about a 2km walk (which if your unfit as i am is a killer)

if your not fussed about facilities then heard towards francorchamps and camp around there, closer to the main part of the track where all the stalls etc are, plus in francorchamps there seems to be more of a nightlife

Last time I was at The Eau rouge site. 2004 The free shuttle bus that ferries spectators from Stavelot Village to the Circuit entrance were more than happy to stop and let people on both ways. Having walked round the sircuit on thursday and Friday it made Saturday and sunday a lot more bearable smile.gif

Be careful though, if they try to make you camp at the bottom of the site try to get as near to the showers as poss, otherwise you'll be in a quagmire if it rains

I stayed in a place about a 10 minute walk to the entrance to eau rouge - near the village of Ster. As was said before stay away from the ones near the pubs - they are very noisy.

On a bad note - the Danish guys next to us had their tickets robbed during the night from their tent. They were obviously pissed the evening before and the thiefs spotted this. These guys had driven down from Denmark only to wake up on Saturday with no tickets. A couple with a 2CV also disappeared at the same time. I would not have picked them other than they did not appear like typical motorsport fans.

Pkenny, Did you have to book a place at the campsite at Ster? We are hoping to go in our campervan and I like the sound of this campsite. Any further info would be very welcome.
pkenny
Rocketsoo,

It is the third one in the original post for this thread www.francrochamps-camping.com. You will find that much of the site is in German but you can navigate it in English.

Thanks very much PK!

Anyone who hasn't yet purchased their tickets for Spa 2007 might want to consider how their view might be restricted but the construction of the new pit area buildings...they look to be a good bit taller than the previous buildings....looks like if your in the Gold grandstand facing the pits your view will be restricted up Eau Rouge...Just a thought....

See the pictures...

Pkenny, hoping to pick your brains on more time!

So would you recommend www.francorchamps-camping.com ('The Elephant') if our priorities were to have somewhere quiet and nearer the Eau-Rouge end of the track?

Are there any other campsites near Ster that you would recommend?

Any thoughts much appreciated!
pkenny
bushhpd,

It is near the track. Is well run. Toilets are clean and you can have a shower. As I mentioned earlier the theft did put a bit of a damper on the whole thing. However, I suspect that this is a general problem. Prices are set by the local commune - local authority. Hence there is really no difference. The campites start about 500 metres up from La Source hairpin. They arc around towards Ster which is very small. The elephant is the last one and the nearest to the Eau Rouge entrance. This is a less busy entrance than the main one up from La Source.

There is a pub/shed across the road but in 2005 it did not open even once. This was probably related to the fact that the numbers were down that year. So no-one can guarantee that anything will be like it was in 2005. However, the attendances at the Belgian GP have now reverted back to norm - circa 50,000. My first time in 2001 had up on 3 times this many persons.

With the CHAMP car race in Zolder the week before I would guess that there might be more people there than in the recent past.

Get there on the Thursday and go for the our around the pits. Most of the drivers will be fooling around on motorbikes or scooters - nearly all of them will take a turn down to Eau Rouge. Also if you have a car drive down towards eau rouge, take the left at the roundabout and drive around the original track. You can take a diversion into Stavelot. It is a really nice village and there is a great racing museum in the Abbey. Getting back on the track you can drive practically down to where the old and new tracks meet.

thanks for the info, incredibly helpful!

If I arrive on the Thursday would you recommend pre-booking a campsite or can we just turn up and pay on the day? When do the campsites tend to get fully booked?
pkenny
Bushhpd,

if the attendance is at 2005,2004 levels there would be no problem turning up on Thursday. I would suspect that even in bumper years like 2001 you would be fine if you turned up on Thursday AM. Get the map of all the campsites so you know where you are.

As everyone who has been will testify you will love it. Enjoy yourself.
