Anthony... that's not a forum, only a thread! Therefore I'd positively encourage you and all the other bike regulars to begin new threads such as this one by Gollyman (welcome, by the way! wave.gif ).

Who knows, it may one day lead to the creation of a sister forum... wink.gif

My uncle was running a team in the late 70s, and early 80s, and he took on Chris after he left Mal Carter's Pharoah Yamaha team. I went to a lot of meetings in my early teens, and he was a nice chap. During those years, my Uncle ran a Honda 125, F2, & F1 Bike, and later a TZ750. Chris was certainly a very talented rider, even though he did "chuck it up the road" a few times from what I could recall. But isn't that always the way when you are young ?

My Uncle's team packed up around 1981 and his Bike Dealership folded the year later. I remember seeing Chris Race on TV a year or so later, and got some really good results on a virtually sponsorless (White) RG500. Also, around that time he was leading the Senior (??) TT, when it was abandoned due to fog.

I believe he more or less had to give up, and go back to his full time job after that, although from what I was told by my dad - who was my uncle's mechanic - he was killed somewhere like Anderstorp or Zandvoort. It is a little vague sadly. Sorry I can't be any more help.

Hello Phil wave.gif Don't you think it strange for someone who was quite well known att, to totally disappear? His Father often used to be at the UK races, Sister too sometimes.
IIRC Guy senior reminded me of Cap'n BirdsEye rolleyes.gif

Well Mike and Stu , I got to know Chris not through racing but through milk!!!! In the late '70's till the mid '80's although involved in racing with the Marks brothers and then Tony Head I owned 2 milk rounds in and around Exeter and delivered milk etc. to his uncle in a village called Shillingford whose car sported Chris Guy stickers . Yes , the Captain Birds Eye tag has been talked about also . If Chris is still in my part of the world I will find out hopefully , as I gave my buisness card to the girl I sold the car to and passed on the message to Chris that I still live in the same house !! eek.gif so we will see
Perhaps we can start a thread on those who have walked away into the sunset............................ ohwell.gif

Better to have walked than be carried!!

I recall Chris Guy having to fund his own racing in the early '80s and was at Donny when he dropped his Brand new RG500 along with Marke Salle and another rider. It might have been on the warm up lap, but anyway, there were 42,000 quids worth of RGs wrecked at the bottom af Craner's and I don't think Chris raced again due to the huge financial burden he had taken on. There was a report in MCN that told of his predicament. I doubt he would have stopped otherwise.

I also recall him dropping it at a televised meeting at Donny 1982/83? when leading, at Goddards? before the loop bit was there at the end of the Dunlop bridge straight, then saw him at Brands in 1984 again fall off along with Ivan Gray, when Chris was riding an RG500 which was supposed to look like Eddie Lawson & his Yamaha!! in the Space Riders film.

It was the cost of the RS500 Honda in 1984 that was so difficult to fund. He missed half the GP's including Silverstone.

That's right, I knew it had come down to money somewhere and poor Chris just couldn't raise the backing. Shame as he was definitely destined for better things.

Thanks Mike

There was definately a feeling amongst some riders having seen the success of the Spencer NS500, a production version was the thing to have. IIRC they were much more expensive to run than the RG Suzuki. Keith Huewen also made the Honda RS500 choice but he had some reasonable backers in SDC. I'm pretty certain the only RS500 that got results in the UK were the Honda Britain bikes of Gardner & Marshall

Yes Mike, Ron Haslam and Roger Burnett also, Roger won the '86 Senior on his Honda Britain RS. I don't know how much they differed from the over-the-counter bikes though,

I also don't remember any other privateer results of note.

I remember Mike Baldwin doing pretty well on his RS500s in 1985, which by the way were the same bikes he won the US F1 championship with in 1984. I do believe he received some factory parts from Honda during the '85 season though.

The year I was thinking of (first year of the RS) Gardner & Marshall ran them as Honda Britain red top bikes, but Rocket was on a blue topped NS works bike, Then it became more confusing the following year with Rothmans Honda & Rothmans Honda Britain bikes looking similar. Not sure that they were all exactly the same bikes. Point being as you say, privateers had very little success on them.

Is this the same Chris Guy who won a Production race in the I.O.M. He had some brothers and they along with Guy Senior also owned a BMW road bike each. The Capt. Birds Eye tag may have been born of the fact that if it is the same Guy senior, he also owned, as I did and Chris, a Waterwitch class yacht, in my case a sloop, in the Guy's case a ketch. Last I heard Chris Guy lived on the Island.
