In the early 1950s John Trowell was with Motor Manual, and he gave me three glossy prints from the period - the brilliant Gunther shot was one, and this posed publicity shot of Jack Brabham, handed out to every newspaper and motoring magazine in the country, was another:

Thanks for that Stephen, yes definately a UK built 997 Cooper, beautifully restored now as you say. Very odd Cooke couldn't recall the car being one of the first and specially imported ?
It is quite a coincidence (or is it ?) that the car McLaren raced in NZ was also an Almond Green imported early 997,(aside from the CKD car he raced at the '62 Australian GP posted earlier). I have heard it said that at least two fully built up cars were sent over from the UK to test some pre production 1071 S motors, wonder what truth there is to that story.

Never seen it in colour before! How long before we get a colour shot of the Bashmobile?
A colour shot of the Bashmobile would be rarer than hens teeth Ray! Must check my '55 (?) Longford report in Modern Motor again - I know the car and driver had a mention but can't remember a photo of it. I'd imagine David Keep would have had something of it but it would have been lost in the '67 bushfires. Lost all his pre '60 stuff - tragic.

Pit scene Narrogin 1948. Ford 10 Special, Ballot V8 and the Cass 500 that was mentioned in regard to the Hall Special. I am told

It was only a couple of weeks ago that John Medley posted how he had just spent 3 hours going over some of the older pages of this now huge and highly significant thread. Can I suggest if we have the time we go back regularly and look through older pages of photos so they stay on the thread rather than become a series of red crosses. Which If I undestand correctly, is what happens when the host provider, such as 'photobucket' etc. turf the image because it hasn't been opened up in 12 months.
Why I write this is because the founder of this thread 'kaydee' (Kevin, who I'm sure can't believe how popular this thread is) now has several red crosses appearing. I have to admit I was doing a cheat and just going through his 12 pages of significant posts just before and found the red cross scenario appearing. Indeed not all his posts relate to this thread, but a high proportion do and so we keep the vast number of all the enthusiasts posting images on here live, we need to check back every so often. Otherwise we just end up with tales & details to a photo, that no longer loads up.

Narrogin was run 6 years including the 1951 AGP. That celebrates 60 years this year.

Great shot of jack thanks for posting Terry. Also the Alta 1962 AGP looks to be prepared to a very high standard for the period.
Jack Ayres cars were always presented to a high standard.

Interesting comment about Jim Keogh having a truck, rather than just a trailer. The benefit of being a barrister/solicitor. During his stint of racing Commodores in the early 80s my old man use to catch up with Jim at dad's work, helping run the service dept at Noel Gould Holden in Berwick, Vic. Noel being one of the dealers who kicked money into the pot when Brock tookover HDT from Sheppo. And for that matter gave Brock a chance to race the HR when Noel was at Watson Holden in Bundoora, some dozen odd years earlier. The benefit of kicking money into HDT was that those dealers got the HDT VCs to sell.
Also interesting that you show Rusty French's Pantera, in conversation a couple of weeks ago, a friend mentioned he was the first to have a semi trailer race transporter. He had a photo of it too (amongst a fantastic array of other photos - just need him to start posting some here - he has joined). I remember the Pantera blasting around Lakeside in 1977, but I can't remember the transporter in the pits.

Concur...and as I suggested a while back...there is no need for it now...the cost and bandwidth available for online storage is both small and vast!! AtlasF1 could easily arrange on line storage especially as the site is subscribed.

Imageshack no longer deletes pictures after a year if they are uploaded by someone who registers (for free) with them...

But Imageshack still gives me a pop-up for a gambling site every time I click on a thumbnail.

Thumbnails have probably outlasted their usefulness, anyway. They were good for when speeds were low and you wanted a page to open, but most people are on some kind of high speed now (except me, of course) and so loading whole pics is fine.

Yes, that shows enough detail to compare with the pic in Around the Houses (page 31) and identify the car...
But then when you turn to the pic of Wally Gibson on the Narrogin page it's alongside a pic of Barker's 'steam kettle' with No 2 on its nose. Terry identified it as 1949, while the pic above and Terry's similar one are from '48. Strange thing is that the singleton mirror on Gibson's car is on the suspension there, while he has two mirrors in the '48 pic.

That was the 'Double 8' build by Eldred Norman...
More familiarly known as the 'Double V8', it had two Ford V8s coupled by a double row chain, sequenced to fire as a V16 and bolted into a Dodge Weapons Carrier chassis. Truck wheels were drilled (to assist keep the unsprung weight down?) and two electric fuel pumps worked off the stoplight switch to spray water over the front brake drums.

I just looked up Terry Walkers race results pages that meeting was October 1951, The main race was the Sundeam Talbot trophy

I dont know anything about the Lawrence cars they were also at Northam and Goomalling in 1952.

Can't resist putting my two bob's worth in here regarding the George Best Cooper which is actually a Mk IV with 1100 JAP engine. I first saw it at Mallala in 1983 after Ian Boughton had rescued it from its hibernation with George Best, I fell in love with it then because it was so original having only done a handful of meetings from new, a few with its importer John Crouch, and only a very few with Best.
I bought it in 1987 and had it for about ten years, it drove quite well apart from the viabration, ( the air cooled newsletter is aptly named "Loose Fillings") and having to push or tow start it was always a big inconvenience especially as the pushers always had a habit of disappearing just when you needed them. Nowadays of course everyone has those electrically operated rollers which make it much easier.
I believe the Cooper is still owned and well cared for by John Gale in Sydney.
