Last year's Silverston was my first ever visit to a F1 race... I loved it!

I came to some conclusions though. I decided to stay in London and use the train each day for going to the track. Big big mistake! Some of you are allready laughing or nodding their heads, I know... And it's true, because each day I had to endure 3-4 hours of train and double-decker busses from Northampton as well as walking to the track from the Silverstone village.

So, If I go again to Silverston I will surely use one of the camping sites so as to be close to the action and don't have to wake up at 5 o clock each morning as well as be anxious to whether I will make it or not...

There is a very frequent bus service from Northampton to the track, especially in Sunday, and it will get you to one junction inside Silverstone village from where you will have to walk to the track.

camping would be your best bet as you may struggle to get a hotel/b&b now

nearest train station would be northampton then you would have to get the bus to the track, dunno about costs or times etc as always camped

Make use of the campsites at Silverstone. There are some good ones around. Yours truly will be camping this year owing to a complete failure of my usual accommodation to give me somewhere to sleep over the weekend. mad.gif Perhaps a group of us can get together and camp together.

I am not sure what this year's camping prices are. Please note that the campsite prices are not set by Silverstone and are completely out of their control. The only camping inside Silverstone is for marshals, BRDC members and Silverstone Racing Club members; the latter is now completely full.

There is a shop in Silverstone village, a Tesco's at Brackley (approx 6 miles away), Tesco's in Buckingham (approx 4 miles away), 2 pubs in Silverstone village (within walking distance) but I think these will get extremely crowded. I can recommend a very good Chinese restaurant in Towcester and another good Chinese restaurant in Buckingham. Food within Silverstone Circuit is rather expensive I'm afraid; again (believe it or not) the food prices are not set by Silverstone but are set by the individual caterers. The Paddock Diner at Silverstone is not open to the public over GP weekend. If you are a Silverstone Racing Club member then you can take advantage of the (hopefully cheaper) food in their clubhouse over the weekend (I have 2 guest passes each day so talk nicely to me if you want feeding in there).

Sorry Farah,no chance cry.gif Not since Bernie took over the show c1982.Last time I went to Silverstone was for the qualifying day of the F3000 International Trophy in 1988.I was refused admission to the F3000 paddock in the lunch break.Swore I would never visit the place again, and have not to date.

Bernie Ecclestone has seen to it that there is no pit/paddock access at the British Grand Prix now. He's even managed to block "Centre Transfer" so fans aren't allowed into the centre of the circuit.

Thanks,Suzy,I did not know that.So you can't even get in the support race paddocks now?
Suzy
Unfortunately there is no "centre" access or access to any of the paddocks at all anymore during GP weekend. Silverstone wanted to keep it open but Bernie/FOM etc had different ideas; when it got to the stage where fans weren't even allowed inside the Paddock Diner or bar anymore and the areas that they could go got more and more restricted, the circuit decided that it was better to stop selling centre transfer etc because it just wasn't worth it. I believe that the GP2 paddock now has the same restrictions as the F1 paddock - complete with turnstiles/special swipe cards etc. Having said that there's usually plenty going on round the outside of the circuit.

Incidentally, come back to Silverstone because times have changed. Nearly every other meeting (except anything involving F1 cars) usually has open-paddock access. Club meetings will also let you park next to the paddock; not the case at promoted meetings (mainly because the car parks become paddock area). That includes the Superbikes and the FIA GTs. Pitlane access is not normally allowed because the track is "live" all day - during the lunch breaks there are usually car rides so the pitlane is still open. To be honest, if you did have pitlane access most teams would have the shutters down anyway so you won't be missing anything.

I don't know about Superbikes and GTs, but certainly at the meetings that I have been to over the last few years, most teams have the shutters open at the back giving a good view into the garages throughout the day. Some might have a length of light chain across to deter Joe Public wandering in, but most have little or no restriction against access to the garage. They seem to rely on the good sense and courtesy of the public not to get in the way, and it works well for all concerned.

Sorry - I meant shutters at the front - e.g. the pitlane. Yes, the back shutters (leading into the paddock) are usually open. Apologies for not making that clear. blush.gif
