I'll be going for the first time this year. I have grandstand seats (in 24) for the weekend, but on Friday I'll be wandering around with my camera looking for good general admission spots to take some photos. I know that GA is pretty bad at Montreal, but anyone have tips on where to go?

You may want to try the inside of the track right in front of stand 33. Also, atop the hill behind 34. I'm not sure about the viewing but a lot of peolple used to crown in to the area in front of stand 12. But, you're right, unfortunately, GA is terrible.

I wouldn't waste my money and use GA on Friday.

Indeed GA is bad. Note the area in front of stands 11 and 12 at the Senna corner is reserved only to those stands' ticket holder. The security guards are doing a ticket check before crossing the bridge.

The problem with taking photos at Montreal is you need a stand ticket to have a clear view. In the GA sections there is always a fence in the way. And unlike Europe (Spa and Monza at least) the grandstands are not open to everyone on Friday which leave you no other choice than your given seat.
