I wonder if anyone knows where the ATS F1 cars are that ran between 1978 and 1984 or even the ex-Penske car the team ran in 1977. I know of a privately owned 1983 car less engine (I think the team leased the BMW turbo engines it used in '83-84), but I wonder about the rest. Did the late Gunther Schmidt keep them and if so where are they now? Thank you for any information you may have.

Mark, the 1984 BMW powered ATS D7 is in the Hockenheim circuit museum, see here.

Don't know about other ATS cars, hope they didn't get the same treatment as Schmidt gave to 'ugly' (but more effective) bodywork parts!

Thanks. Anyone knows something about the whereabouts of the earlier models?

A frined knows where they are but he will not reveal where.
I think they are still in Germany, most likely still with Schmidt, or someone connected with him.

Thanks Peter, that is what I always understood was the case.

Yes the earlier cars exist, more or less all together and you may see one sooner than you think...

And no its not the mad wing crusher who is deceased. cool.gif

This is a wild guess but I suspect Gunthers younger brother will have them possibly at one of the wheel factories.

Maybe not the best of cars but it is beautiful in my mind. I sem to remember German magazine RallyeRacing ran a series of articles about it's gestation. If only I had kept the copies. evil.gif

How about from the 1960's

Ok, not the ATS car but I took this picture of a Rial F1 during its restauration in 2006.

It belongs to Ralf Schmid, son of Günther and owner of the Rial factory today. AFAIK he owns a second car.

I always wondered why Gunther didnt try and sell the team on at the end of 84, or even equipe the cars with Harts himself. They were good decent chassis, probably would have run well with a Hart in it. Maybe he didnt think he would get tyres, or was worried by the appearance of Zakspeed. Seems a shame he didnt try and do something though, guess he was that rich he could park the cars but not that rich he could afford to put new engines in them.

I heard that when Eddie Keizan of TSW wheels bought ATS the cars were part of the deal??
