Ha ha, yep, Mr. Wattiez in usual pose in his 5000 car. Despite the fact I polished it and made it as shiny as possible, it still didn't cut through the air fast enough with Nicky at the wheel.

It's 1974 by the way. Nick's car is the ex-Edwards Barclays sponsored T330, spannered by Malcolm Malone. The long serving Lola bolter who spannered Surtees' Can-Am T70 to win the title, also on Hailwood's and Gardner's F5000 cars. He couldn't make Nicky any quicker. Sadly Malcolm died later that season, a big shock to all of us, a lovely man.

That car didn't appear often. Just Croft and a single Oulton from early Sep 1978 through to the end of 1979. The car is Shadow DN3/5B. Could I use the picture on oldracingcars.com? I think I've seen one other of Bennett in the car but I can't remember where.

That looks like Trotty in his RP26 coming up the inside with John Village in his Van Diemen on the outside of him? Have a memory that JV switched to a VD for a year between Royales.

Dr. JP's JSM truck was sold the end of that season to David Wheeler (SDC Royale). I remember as we went to Sussex to fetch it for David.

21 is David McClelland in the Hawke DL21 I think; 44 Terry Gray in the works Van Diemen?; Nogues was in F3 by then; 4 David Griffin in Van Diemen?; if it's 1979 Village would have been in his Royale RP26 that he used to win the European championship

McClelland in a Hawke? Don't remember that. It's Ian Shaw behind Gray and Rick Whyman behind Trott, I think.

God, I fancied Shaw's sister...... blush.gif

Don't think McClelland hung around for long; he was in a Van Diemen by mid season. I thought it might have been my old BHR instructor Peter Argentsinger, who also had a go in the works DL21 and then swiftly moved on to a Royale, but I'm sure it's McClelland's helmet

I know what you mean about Shaw's sister; I still remember watching a Brands race at Paddock with her and [I think] Tommy Byrne's sister - happy days.

I thought Ian Shaw's car was white.

Never met the sister but had one or two drinks with Rod his manic mechanic.

Well the patch behind the number is. It looks a typical yellow Hawke (in black & white).

It hasn't got the JAK logos on either.

For goodness sake. Are we looking at the same car? The one behind Gray's Van Diemen? wink.gif

Alan the 21 car IS a Hawke [McClelland's]; Shaw is almost invisible behind Terry Gray - you can tell it's him by the helmet, and I think you're pretty familiar with bits of PRS bodywork.

While we're on this, can someone start a thread of photos of the sisters of PRS drivers in 1979?...Sure, it's a bit specific but the world needs to know

Whoops. Sorry about the mistake. Shaw had a Hawke before the PRS hence my confusion.

I'm married to the sister of a 1982 PRS driver. Does that count smile.gif

I have owned one of the ex Pat Hansen Royale RP31Ms for quite a few years now and being somewhat long in the tooth only compete in hill climbs and sprints these days. I take part in the French hill climb scene as well as some UK meetings. The only photograph I have seen of an RP31 is the one of Richard Street as seen a few pages back and wondered if anyone has any more photos of these cars, including the two run by Pat and does anyone remember who drove these cars in period. The other ex Pat Hansen RP31 car is currently being used for sprints and hill climbs after doing some time as a school car at Mallory Park. I will try to find some way of posting a picture of my car.

Is the PRS #31 young Tommy Byrne?
MCS
Yes, early season race, struggling with the yellow works PRS...
Simon Arron
May 12 1979, I reckon - a BARC Championship race.

#60 is Tim Knight (RF78), #31 is Master Byrne, #61 is David Duffield (Crosslé 32F) and #11 is Mick Cook (then in a Royale RP21, now head of engineering with Arden International in GP2). Crosslé #24 is Robert Foden, who previously raced something passably obscure - a Mistral, if memory serves.

Not sure whether Mark Scanlon fancied any of their sisters, though. That isn't mentioned in the programme.

Incredibly sparse with their information, those 1970s BARC programmes...

Understeer, oversteer - Who cares? Rick Morris and Robeto Moreno, cracking Formula Ford racers both. 1980 Old Hall Corner, Oulton.

Wouldn't be Cornishman Willie Pascoe in the Crossle would it? I think he worked for Hicks of Truro before emigrating to the Forest of Dean where he interviewed me for the first job I ever went for, at our local Renault dealers. I got the job and like a total eejit turned it down and went off to college for a year instead. Then I abandoned the concept for working for other people in favour of selling books and living in poverty ever after....
well almost...
Willie's Crossle ended up with an ex Mansell/Unipart Dolomite F3 engine in the back.

That's the John Kirkpatrick entered car. JK ran the Snetterton & Donington Jim Russell racing schools for years and ran young Damon Hill in FF2000.
That looks like mechanic Bruce Russell to the left. He's worked for almost every outfit in the business!

Is that Cameron Binnie next to Foden, Indescon VD? The Bennett Shadow was one of the ex-P R Reilly cars wasn't it?

Slipping badly, SA...!! I'm sure Master Hamilton would be v keen to have a look this weekend. You'll have to up your game to get an invite to PR's party, and mine some years later.

Did we decide on the odd car in front of the Shadow?

That would have been the 200 mile race at Oulton 1981, I was in that race myself.

I can't recall many non-FF Crossle single seaters on the mainland at this time, Pascoe's the only one. Did he get 'up North' though, or was the Shadow down south? Was the car an ex F2/FAt chassis?

Is that your Tiga behind the JK Lola T590, Richard? And a coup for JK to get 2 stars into his Lola, how did he do that I wonder, he usually had to make do with the likes of Bruce Russell, Bob Moore, and Alan Sidorov...
RTH
I do not have a picture from the Oulton race because the entire team that day were just the two drivers Terry Welsh and myself. If you were there that day Dan and had come up to me you would have got the job of team manager... and everything else !!
This is a picture the same year of the Brands 200 miler just at the end of practice that is me on the left in the black and red overalls. The car then still had the SC78 bodywork we upgraded over the next winter to the SC79 bodyshape.

Mallory Dan
Richard, you'd have had to have been utterly desperate to have me as a "Team Principal" (don't you just hate that phrase?). I don't know one end of a de Dion from a slick...

I assume he went north - everywhere is a major treck from Cornwall so it's about as far to somewhere like Silverstone as it would be to Llandow where he raced quite a lot at the time.
The car was said to be ex F2 but I knew nothing about Crossle's at the time so it didn't mean much to me and I never got around to asking it's history later on. I do have a later shot of it at Combe in about 1983 in the MacLean Hunter Libre series. It was orange at the time.

It was the only time before or since that I had literally no supporters at all at a race meeting, I suppose because it was a 500 mile round trip....and you do need helpers!
You would have been alright Dan the Tiga did not have a De Dion axle !!

Does anyone have a programme for the 1984 Formula Ford Festival?

Who's in the 3rd car, behind Buzzaid & Pratt?

I think 111 maybe Andrew Gilbert-Scott, but who's in the sideways Royale, Rick Morris? Vivion Daly follows.

Who are these four?
